This Sunday evening, I receive a flood of messages from my Girls<\/em>. They played the French Junior Teams Championship. I answer all their questions, but Lucie’s is the one that particularly attracts my attention. It relates to both the bidding and the card play.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> “I was North and I decided to open 1♣. L\u00e9a answered 1♠ and I next bid 2♥. L\u00e9a jumped to 3NT and I thought that we could make a slam but that it wasn’t certain because she could just want to play 3NT with 7-8 HCP. L\u00e9a did have the 10 HCP that I needed for the slam, but she thought it would not be enough to bid 6NT. What do you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> “You don’t know your point ranges for No-Trump rebids and L\u00e9a doesn’t seem to be very sure of herself either. In fact, her 3NT bid shows exactly 10-12 HCP. If you needed ten points with your 22 HCP and your beautiful five-card suit, you could therefore go for the slam.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> “But why do we bid 3NT with ten points facing a reverse when we may want to play 3NT with only 7-8 HCP?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cThis is because even if 3NT does not suggest playing a slam, the bid shows that that one does not abandon the idea of playing one in case that opener has the maximum for her reverse bid – as it was your case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> \u201cAh yes, so she should bid a parachute 2NT followed by 3NT if she is really absolutely allergic to slam, if she has 7-9 HCP.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cVoil\u00e0, you have perfectly well understood the principle. With a weaker hand than hers, she would have bid 2NT over which the opener cannot pass since she is committed to bidding again. After that, she would have bid 3NT or passed over 3NT if that had been your bid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> \u201cIn any case, the contract of 6NT was neither bid nor made at either of the two tables because the Heart finesse is not working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cAnd there was nothing better to do than finesse in Hearts? No squeeze either?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> \u201cBah, you know us and squeezes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cShow me the hands, please.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cCome on! These were really your two hands? L\u00e9a played on Hearts with these two hands?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> \u201cWell yes, it was her best suit. It was therefore the one in which she was most likely to find an additional trick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cNo, Lucie. Take a closer look at the Spades and you’ll see that there was a better chance of winning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> \u201cAh yes, we have AJ10 in Spades. So, it is possible to play the double finesse in the suit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cYes, this plan increases your chances of winning from 50 to 75%. But AJ10, as you say, is not enough if they are not in the same hand. Without the Spade nine, the chances of winning would be much lower than those of the Heart finesse. Don\u2019t forget you have to be really careful with the intermediate cards: the nine and the eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> \u201cIn fact, the double finesse would succeed since East held the King third. After all, it was easy to win 6NT.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cYes, it was just necessary to take one last precaution on the Diamond lead. Do you see which one?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucie:<\/strong> \u201cYes, of course, you have to take Ace of Diamonds so as not to block the suit!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> “That’s true, but it’s not the only reason. You also need to be able to communicate so that you can cash the high Spade later. You see, if you play a Spade from dummy, East can go in with the King and then you won’t be able to cash your last Spade if you did not keep that small Diamond for communication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
