You agree that now I cannot continue with another Spade?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cI don&#8217;t understand what you mean when you say she didn&#8217;t play well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not take long for her following message to get to me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L\u00e9a:<\/strong> \u201cBah, you have explained to us many times that when we lead a King against No-trump, this asks partner to unblock their honor (or one of their honors).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cYes, you are right, but I also said that there were three exceptions: when dummy has Jack third, the ten fourth or a singleton. In all three cases, your partner&#8217;s honor is too important to be wasted on your King. You must see that if she had played her Ace on your King, this would have established dummy&#8217;s Jack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L\u00e9a:<\/strong> \u201cYes, I now remember &#8211; but in that case, how could I know that she had the Ace when she played a small Spade?\u201d She could have at least played a high card!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cYou know, I don&#8217;t know if she had a high card to play but anyway this is not a situation in which she needs to show attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L\u00e9a:<\/strong> \u201cSo, I have to guess? I need to think that opponent who has opened 1NT has nothing in Spades?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cStop for two seconds and think. Who has the Ace of Spades? You should know it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time, L\u00e9a takes longer before she finally answers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L\u00e9a:<\/strong> \u201cAh yes, right! South cannot have the Ace, or he would have played it! If he won my King with the Ace, that would ensure him two tricks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cOh yes, and your partner&#8217;s Spade two often comes from three cards. Then I would not have seen the two and I would have thought that Alice had it. I would have played another Spade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cI told you, on the lead of the King, there is no case for attitude, given that one is supposed to unblock an honor if there is one. That means that if one does not play it, one a priori does not have it, except in the case of Jack third, as here, or four cards to the ten. The only exception is when there is a singleton in dummy. In that situation, and only in that situation, attitude is possible on the lead of a King. In fact, the shorter the dummy, the longer the declarer and therefore you need to be careful not to waste your honors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L\u00e9a:<\/strong> \u201cOK. And should we encourage with small or with high cards in that case?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cThat&#8217;s up to you. The most important thing is that you play the same signals as your partner. Let&#8217;s say it&#8217;s more widely played to encourage with high cards.
