Three Hearts, two Diamonds and the two black aces make a total of seven tricks. You’ll establish the two missing tricks in Diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What problems do you need to solve?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two. The first: which Club should you play from dummy at trick one?<\/strong>
The 5 of Clubs is fourth-best, thus promising at least one honor. But you never know – if it is the Jack and if you play small, East can go up with the King and switch to a Spade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Under these conditions, what do you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best not to take any chances, even if the risk seems minimal. Call for the Ace of Clubs to protect against a Spade switch. If a defender gets in with a Diamond, you can’t lose more than two Clubs anyway:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The second problem: how do you handle the Diamonds?<\/strong>
You only need two tricks in addition to the Ace and King to get your nine tricks<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Diamonds are 3-2, you are in no trouble. However, if they are 4-1 (28% of the time), this is not certain. Fortunately, there is a safety play, which will ensure you always establish the two additional tricks you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does it consist of?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In cashing the big honor that is in the same hand as the Jack (here the Ace). The defense will follow with the six and seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continue with the two towards dummy’s King-nine and cover West’s card as low as possible. If he has Queen-Ten fourth, he will only make one trick. And if West discards on the second round? In that case you’ll win with dummy’s King and then continue with the nine towards the Jack in your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By playing that way, you win against any 4-1 distribution – a safety play that is essential in teams matches (or IMP pairs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The principle<\/strong><\/p>

There are two attitudes that you must not mix up:<\/p>

– At the start of the play, you had to protect against a possibly deadly Spade switch by immediately taking dummy’s Ace. Even though you are declarer, you adopted a purely “defensive” attitude, aimed at preventing the defense from taking five tricks before you could get nine.<\/p>

– Afterwards, and only afterwards, you started the offensive play, tackling the Diamonds as a function of the exact number of tricks you needed by using a safety play, adapted to a teams match.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
