How do you go about not conceding two ♥ tricks if the suit breaks 4-1? The large number of trumps you hold should be making you think about a throw-in. But you are missing the 8 of ♥ for it to work. You therefore cannot carry this out against West. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it might be possible to force East (if he only has one ♥) to give a ruff-and-discard. You will then need to give up the lead to him. West’s double indicates that he holds all the missing honours; the only hope is to find the 10 of ♠ with East. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Win the lead with the Ace of ♥ and play the King of ♠, West’s Ace ruffed in the dummy. Ace of Trumps, trump to the King and the Jack of ♠. West plays the Queen; you ruff in the dummy. Ace-King of ♣ and a ♣ ruffed to eliminate the suit, King of ♥ to check the bad break and then the 9 of ♠, discarding a ♥ from the dummy. East, on lead, plays back a ♠ or ♣, which allows you to discard the last ♥ from the dummy and ruff in your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
