So, what is the problem? Toffier and Sylvie Willard explain it to us: “Double. There is a non-zero risk of Partner passing but no other bid suits our hand.” They were supported by a large majority (19 out of 29). At the Cannet club, it was a real winner: “Around 75% of the players at the BBC were in favour of doubling. Fear will not protect you from danger.” Most considered the vulnerability to be an important factor and that even if the auction ended, that would not be too bad. That was the case with Volcker: “Double. We are vulnerable against not: my partner shouldn’t pass too often…”, Quantin: “Double. If there is a worry to be had about this ‘obvious’ bid, it is that Partner might convert the take-out double to penalties. The prospect of finding ourselves defending against 1 Club is not thrilling. But that is taking a dim view of the situation: even if Partner did pass (and that were not a good decision), Opener’s partner will, no doubt, be a long way off accepting that contract.” and Justin Hackett: “Double. To show a strong hand with Diamonds later on. If everyone passes, I still have some defensive tricks.”

The other doublers explored other avenues and then abandoned them.

Kokish: “Double. Dangerous, of course, but 2♦ is an underbid and a cue bid would show a two-suiter. My diamonds are not good enough for bidding 3♣ as a stop ask. That leaves double or 1♦. At this vulnerability, 1♦ is insufficient.”

Rocafort: “Double. Clearly, this is not a cure-all: we are trembling a bit at the idea that that could be that; but the alternatives are not very attractive. I cannot even proceed as though playing opposite myself… because then, 2♣ and 3♣ would be two-suiters. Simply trying 1♦, seeing what the three others make of that and then reacting accordingly would not be totally silly.”

Kerlero: “Double. I have the feeling that we might stay there and that that will not be good… But what can you do? Even if I were perfectly OK about raising the upper limit for balancing in a suit, it still seems to me that I have too much for 1♦.”

Libbrecht: “Double. I can well see the problem: partner potentially passing with a more rewarding contract available for our side. But I do not like forcing to game with a 3♣ bid with all these tenaces positioned the wrong way round. Double followed by 3♦ seems more suitable to me.”

All of these other bids that have been mentioned still got one or a few votes.

First of all, there are the non-French players who, it seems, do not have the same conventions for balancing as the standard French system: Jill Meyers chose 2♦ and Żmudziński: “3♦. Between double and 3♦, that depends on the system you play. For me, 3♦. For the jury, double.”

And then, among the French, you will find all those for whom the fear of playing in 1 Club Doubled was stronger than anything else. Their votes were divided between 1♦, 2♣ and 3♣. I have chosen one representative for each of these bids.

Cronier: “1♦. I do not want to play in 1 Club Doubled; I can’t say 2♣ (major two-suiter for me). I could try 3♣, with a mind to asking for a club stop for playing in 3 No-Trumps and showing a strong single-suiter with Diamonds. But I still have a few gaps in my hand and prefer to protect at the 1-level with ‘a bit more in the tank’. I’ve heard tell that in today’s bridge, balancing at the 1-level can be a bit stronger than it used to be. Here is the proof!”

Lévy: “2♣. I do not want to play in 1 Club Doubled; that is a given. 2♣ is either a two-suiter in the reds or a strong single-suiter. If North jumps to 4♥, 5(6) Diamonds shouldn’t be a bad contract.”

Lhuissier: “3♣. Asking for a club stop to play in 3 No-Trumps. 2♣ would be the majors and 2♦ natural. At this vulnerability, I cannot double.”

The final say goes to Adad, who gave me this problem: “3♣. We played in 1 Club Doubled (I had AKJ9x) and I suggested to my partner to balance with 1♦, as we surely won’t end up there..? On reflection, 3♣ should show this type of hand. With a major instead of Diamonds, you would bid game.”

Remember: what should 3♣ mean in this sequence? As for everything else, I think that you do not need to look to “come up with” anything. In my view, you should make the bid that describes your hand the best and trust your partner. He can see the vulnerability as well.

Deal 1 Scores

Double: 100 points (19 votes)
3♣: 20 points (4 votes)
2♣: 10 points (2 votes)
1♦: 10 points (2 votes)
2♦: 5 points (1 vote)
3♦: 5 points (1 vote)

Deal 2: Neither yes nor no

With this hand, should you strongly discourage your partner, who would like to go to slam? Yes, say four experts, including Lhuissier: “4♥. No desire to go to slam with an eight-card fit, tonnes of ruffs to take and abysmal trump quality.”

No, reply the other 25, though aware that they should not be doing too much. This was summed up by Chantal Nevers: “3NT. Better than 4♥ but worse than showing a control. Ace-King-Ace is good news but four trumps without an honour and a void in my partner’s suit: bad news.”

I subscribe to this analysis and recommend this convention. The main thing, as usual, is to carefully define the meaning you assign to this 3NT, as opinions vary.

Leenhardt: “3NT. To indicate poor trumps.”

Combescure: “3NT. Shortage in Clubs, good hand. Despite my four small hearts, we will make a slam with North holding ♠Q3 ♥AK62 ♦K73 ♣J542.”

Chemla: “3NT. This bid should show slam interest with poor trumps, among other meanings.”

Adad: “3NT. A non-serious bid showing weakness in Trumps and a 4-4 fit; less discouraging, though, than 4♥.”

Piganeau: “3NT. Nice hand but with two downsides (the void and the mediocre hearts).”

Lévy: “3NT. Yes; but. Too many controls to settle for 4♥ but the trumps are too weak for you to show a control.”

This “yes but” seems to me to be a handy formula to remember. You need to be able to say that you do not actually have either a 5-4-2-2 11-count or the means to take charge by starting a cue-bidding sequence.

On the other end of the scale, you find all the more reckless players who start cue-bidding. Some with 4♦. Why? A mystery…

Jill Meyers: “4♦. My hearts are horrible but I have too many controls to settle for 4♥” and Toffier: “4♦. Sure, my heart suit is nonexistent; but on the other hand, I do have a maximum opener. I should make a try.”

Others tried 3♠, which seems dangerous to me but limits the risk of an accident compared to 4♦. Thuillez: “3♠. Bad trumps and a club void are bad news but the hand is too nice to settle for 4♥.”

Duguet: “3♠. Followed by 4♦. Modern, showing, in principle, at least five spades and a three-card heart fit. A convention that complements direct three-card support-showing bids (in the style of 2NT as 11-12 HLD points), solving the problem of making a spade bid.”

In the same vein, Thuillez: “2♠. Limit raise in Hearts with four or five nice spades”, Chantal Nevers: “2♠. Three-card heart support with at least five cards in Spades and a limited strength.”

If you do not play this convention, the standard French system will stump you, as Rocafort explains: “2NT. Unless you have 2♠ available as an encouraging bid with lots of major-suit cards, you are obliged to take a view straightaway. 1♠ then 2♥ (over the likely 2♦) is too discouraging. 1♠ then 3♥: shame; you arrived too late. 1♠ then 2♠: too timid. 1♠ then 3♠: too committal.”, supported by Volcker: “2NT. Three possible choices: raising to 2♥, I think you are too strong for; bidding 1♠ then stopping in 4♥ over my partner’s rebid, I don’t think you have quite enough for; and bidding 2NT to show a fit but with the disadvantage of not showing my spades… I opt for 2NT, which is, in my opinion, the smallest lie.”

The essential point to remember is that if you start with 1♠, you will no longer be able to support Hearts afterwards if Partner rebids 2♣ or 2♦, as:

1♠ followed by 2♥ would then be preference, which justifies Chemla‘s choice: “2♥. You cannot choose 1♠ followed by 2♥, which would be too discouraging over a 2♣ or 2♦ rebid by an opener who will be in no way convinced of finding three trumps opposite.”

1♠ followed by 3♥ would be forcing to game. Bad luck for the hearts!

Quantin: “1♠. Tricky to keep quiet about such a nice suit. The second bid will also be tricky: I probably won’t be able to show a heart fit in a non-forcing way and shall therefore repeat my spades.”

Fortunately, Chidiac has thought about all this and explained his system to us: “1♠. I have decided on 1♠ with this lovely six-card suit but while envisaging a well-defined plan for the follow-up according to my partnership agreements. After a sequence that starts 1♥-pass-1♠, the continuations obviously depend on Opener’s rebid and will be as follows:

Over a 1NT rebid, with 3♥ being game-forcing and showing vague interest in slam, we should go via a Checkback Stayman 2♣ bid [over 2♣, Opener will continue with 2♠ with three cards in Spades; 2♥ with a nice, top-of-the-range hand (a good 13 to 14 HCP); otherwise, he will be forced to say 2♦]. Over 2♠, even non-vulnerable, we will go straight to game with 4♠. Over 2♥, we will bid game with 4♥ and over 2♦, we will invite to game with 3♥ (note that 2♥ directly over 1NT is an encouraging bid).

Over a 2m rebid, it is trickier as we can no longer invite to game in Hearts; we will do so in Spades, continuing with a jump to 3♠. This nice spade suit and the heart fit permit us to take such a risk: even non-vulnerable.

Over a 2♥ rebid, we will invite to game by continuing with 3♥.

Over the other rebids, we will bid game, even co-operating with a slam try if the rebid shows a strong-enough hand.”

Choose the convention you like the most but be aware that most of the time, this will not matter. Statistically (the Cat might help us), I think that they are right. It is hard to see how a game could have a 50% chance of success (the condition for bidding it non-vulnerable).

At the Cannet club, they were restrained (amazing when you know Katia and Yves Lormant’s personalities): “Pass. No hand and no game for over 80% of the members!” and Saporta was of the same opinion: “Pass. We will make a game one time in 36.”

Kokish was pessimistic: “Pass. Even though North did not respond 2♦ and his strength is limited, 4 Hearts might still be on. But when North says 3♠ or 3NT, we will know that 3 Diamonds was the right contract.”

As for the others, they cite the vulnerability as justification for their timidity.

Pacault: “Pass. With poor-quality diamonds and three cards in Hearts, North would have passed over 2♥. North seems to have six diamonds and four clubs. 3 No-Trumps might be on the cards with solid diamonds and relatively good clubs but the likelihood of success seems to me to be slim. The vulnerability makes me want to pass.”

Jill Meyers: “Pass. If I were vulnerable, I would try 3♥.”

Thuillez: “Pass. We are green: we have as much to gain as to lose.”

Chemla: “Pass. Maybe a bit pessimistic but, after all, it is only a non-vulnerable game!”

Let us finish with Cronier: “Pass. I would like to bid 2NT and for my partner to understand… But it seems to me that that would be a natural bid. If I double, he will think me stronger and less distributional. As we will surely not stop there, I prefer to pass and bid later, hoping not to find myself too high.”

Sylvie Willard: “Pass. The hand is a bit weak for a bid showing the minors. North seems, from my singleton heart, to have a very good hand. The sequence has not ended and if my partner bids, I will have fuel for showing my minor two-suiter.”

Tessières: “Pass. No other bid suits my hand this time round but the bidding has surely not ended.”

For the others, who chose to bid, there were several possibilities, all mentioned by Lévy: “Double. 2NT is natural: everyone knows that; a take-out double is for the minors but more like 8-10 HCP than 4. The 5-5 distribution compensates for the gaps. Saying 3♣ or 3♦ is a 50% bet that could end very badly. Pass: no thank you.”

He is supported by Chemla: “Double. Everyone knows that this call is often inviting Partner to find a fit in a minor! I recognise that the hand is a bit weak.” and Adad: “Double. Despite my few points, finding a minor fit seems to me to be a priority. If I pass, West will continue with 3♥ or 4♥ and I will no longer dare get involved.”

Against Lévy’s assertion, not everyone plays a 2NT bid as natural in this situation (personally, I have always wondered what use that would be…). So, here, is this the time to use it as a minor two-suiter? In any case, abroad, it is laughable to play 2NT as natural.

Żmudziński: “2NT.” Kokish: “2NT. It is now or never for showing my minors.”

Toffier: “2NT. Though this bid is natural in the SEF (French Teaching System), most players play it as asking for the minors. It is a very optimistic bid but the heart singleton is appealing.”

To finish, the bid most chosen by the “non-passers”.

Volcker: “3♣. I thought about passing and then reopening (the bidding will not stop in 2♥ if I pass here) but, after all, a nice five-card suit and some distribution…”

Quantin: “3♣. Despite my pretty weak hand, I want to bid, spurred on by my minor two-suiter and my heart singleton. 2NT would be natural and my option would be to double initially to show a hand oriented to playing in the minors. But would I not need a better hand? The advantage of 3♣ is showing what would seem to be the best lead against an opposing contract.”

Lhuissier: “3♣. Original, has the advantage of showing what to lead against 4 Hearts. I would like to make a bid to propose competing to the 5-level but I do not see one.”

Cronier: “3♣. I know that double in this situation is, in principle, take-out for the minors. But I have a funny feeling that that should promise a bit more of a hand, especially vulnerable. I am very afraid that by doubling, I might frequently find myself facing a difficult decision when the sequence continues 4♥-double-pass. However, I do concede, to the organiser of this contest, that it is not very satisfactory to pass with 5-5 and a heart singleton. Might we have a great sacrifice available; or might we make a 5-level contract? So as not to lose out on all my options, I choose the middle ground of 3♣. At least I will find the right minor-suit contract half the time and I am showing the best possible lead from my point of view.”

Post mortem: North had ♠AKQJ1094 ♥AQ2 ♦- ♣A93. Any of South’s bids could have easily incited him to bid a slam (6 Spades), which was making. Reversing the diamonds and clubs would have made that more difficult… In any case, remember: not everyone plays that 2NT in this sequence promises 10-11 balanced without four spades and with a heart stop (if you ever have a hand of that kind in this sequence one day, do not hesitate to let me know).

Deal 5 Scores

Pass: 100 points (11 votes)
3♣: 70 points (7 votes)
Double: 50 points (5 votes)
2NT: 40 points (4 votes)
3♦: 20 points (2 votes)

Deal 6: An obscure sequence

We are finishing with another sequence which left many experts quite perplexed as to the forcing nature of the auction. If you manage to reach a definitive opinion by reading the commentary below, well done! Let us begin with the more marginal answers.

Sylvie Willard: “Pass. Unless 4♣ is non-forcing!“

Adad: “3NT. I am afraid that 4♣ might be forcing with a big honour-doubleton. The most economical game between 4 Hearts and 5 Clubs. 3 No-Trumps does not seem sensible facing a 6-5 hand.”

Combescure: “5♣. Eight (or nine) clubs with the 10, against only seven hearts with the 9.”

Quantin: “4♥. Unsolvable; you need to know the respective quality of North’s suits to make the correct decision. I choose the game requiring ten tricks rather than eleven.”

Chemla: “5♣. I must admit that, as many others (I expect), I have not studied the continuations in this situation with my current partners. I therefore fear the worst. Does a direct 3♥ bid show a fit in Spades or a non-forcing 6-5 hand? That is to be decided. Is 4♣ forcing? And 3♥? I don’t think so. All of that depends on partnership style.”

Cronier: “4♥. Partner has shown a strong 6-5 hand and I am very afraid that our sequence might be forcing, South not having used 2NT to sign off. Passing vulnerable with an ace opposite a very strong hand is not at all to be recommended. Then, 3 No-Trumps is a priori doomed to failure. And if we have to play in 5 Clubs with 10-doubleton serving to establish the hearts, that is too much for me. I’m going for 4♥, without enthusiasm…”

I, who asked the questions in the hope of getting some answers, am now left with even more questions… Fortunately, some had a more cut-and-dried opinion on the matter and chose to try applying the brakes in Opener’s known longer suit.

Kerlero: “4♣. For me, the bid is non-forcing. I consider 2♠ to either promise six cards in Spades or a very weak hand unsuitable for a 2NT slow-down (like this one) and with which I intend to pass over any non-forcing rebid (2NT, 3♣…). As I would no doubt rebid 3♠ (over 3♥) with six cards, 4♣ should logically be interpreted as a simple preference bid.”

Saporta: “4♣. The Ace of Spades is useless if North is 0-5-2-6 and I cannot bid 3NT. A simple preference bid which should not contain any promises. There are moments where one wishes for a power cut. Things have started badly but the situation is not desperate: the Ace of Spades is not necessarily facing a void and, if North has intermediates in his suits, there may be a way to get through this.”

Hackett: “4♣. Very difficult. 3NT might be the right contract but my diamond stop is weak. Pass: why not? But I have an ace.
