Count your winners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only have four from the top with Ace-King of Clubs, the Spade Ace and the Diamond Ace. Fortunately, you will quickly get five more thanks to the Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the simplest solution that comes to mind?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trying the finesse against the King of Diamonds. If it is successful, you can collect three Diamond tricks and then a Club ruff in dummy would be enough to get your trick count up to twelve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But is there a plan that allows you to make even if Cesar, the King of Diamonds, is offside?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, but to do this, you must change your base hand and set up a dummy reversal \u2012 in other words, ruff three Spades in your hand. However, since this plan requires other favorable conditions to be fulfilled, you have to check first if it is really viable. In any case, it does not cost anything to immediately ruff a Spade to initiate said dummy reversal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

And then?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play the King of trumps. West follows with the 2 and East discards the Spade 6. Of course, you then continue the suit, carefully playing the 7 from your hand. West sees the trump 7, he jumps up with the Ace and plays back a Diamond, putting you to a guess\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By now, what do you know about the hands of the defenders?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

West had King-Queen of Spades and the Heart Ace. However, East raised to 2♠, vulnerable. He is now a great favourite to hold the Diamond King and the Club Queen. Your dummy reversal is more pertinent than ever!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You call for the Ace of Diamonds and take advantage of being on the board to ruff a second Spade with the Heart Queen (not the 8!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play the well preserved 8 of trumps, overtaking it with the 10 in order to finish reversing the dummy by ruffing the last Spade<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the position of the remaining cards?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are in your hand and you can perfectly well visualize East\u2019s remaining five cards: the stiff Diamond King and four Clubs to the Queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you bestow the finishing blow upon your opponent?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s simple. Cross to dummy with the ♣A and cash the ♥9. If East keeps the ♦K, throw the Diamond Queen and finesse in Clubs. If he discards the ♦K you throw a Club and take the finesse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The principle<\/strong><\/p>

Everything was executed to perfection:<\/p>

– First, you start the dummy reversal without further ado.<\/p>

– As soon as you have shed light on the position of the trump Ace, think back to the auction and deduce where the other important honors (Diamond King and Club Queen) are situated.<\/p>

– Once these honours are located, abandon the idea of a simple finesse and validate the plan of a dummy reversal accompanied by a squeeze.<\/p>

– To complete everything, you must demonstrate absolute accuracy in timing as well as in the use of your different entry cards.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
