After some moments of thought, the young lady switches to the 9 of Clubs. Baby shark wins the trick with the Queen. Even online, his way of collecting the trick leaves no ambiguity in the air as to his satisfaction. After drawing trumps, he now plays a Heart to set up his tenth trick: he has five Spades, two tricks in each minor and a Heart.

No mood marks, no comment in the chat window of one of the two partners of our future mixed pair. But when a new diagram appears, the young lady is slow to bid.

The protagonists inside the room do not know it more than the few spectators, but her partner couldn’t resist calling her on the phone. And the discussion is everything but calm.

– “Really, what an idea to lead away from your King of Clubs! Are the young lady’s theories defensible? Is the wrath of the young man justified? Was there another way to solve this? In one word, who is responsible for the catastrophe? She needs four tricks to beat this. Even if South’s card is not honest, we can count on two Hearts. What about the other two? It well seems that Clubs are the best candidate. But is it really urgent to play the suit? Have a closer look:

If the young lady follows her partner’s recommendation and switches to a Diamond, South will no longer make ten ricks, but eleven! This time, the only defense to beat the contract really is to attack Clubs before South can establish his tenth trick in Hearts. So… if we decide to pardon her must we conclude that the deal is too difficult and put it in the drawer of unfindable defenses? However, are we still interested in the case of our handsome young man (did I not tell you that he was charming? You understood it anyway. By the way, the young lady is not bad either…).

From his point of view, is there any interest in West playing something else than Hearts? Playing a Diamond is doubtlessly correct, maybe even useful from time to time, but there is absolutely nothing urgent about it. On the other hand, a Club switch seems very likely to turn into a disaster. And these Clubs are the normal suit for a switch from West’s point of view: the famous three little cards that we are told to attack when it seems urgent to get tricks for the defense. East could have (should have?) anticipated his partner’s problem and encouraged a Heart continuation. After all, “to encourage” means to tell partner that we think playing a Heart is good for our side’s interest. That’s exactly the idea that East should have had.

Let’s not be mistaken: in the second diagram, East can happily discourage Hearts because his Club Queen allows him to support a Club switch, which would be fatal for declarer…

Remember

· To discourage one suit corresponds to suggesting – or at least accepting – that partner plays another suit.

· When it seems that a switch to the “normal” suit is a bad idea, you have to encourage the played suit, including when you have three small.

What ue pensez-vous de cet article de Philippe Cronier ?

Partagez votre opinion avec les autres Funbridgeurs dans la section Commentaires ci-dessous !

The eternal question for a bridge player… whose fault was it, who is guilty?
