A little comment about the auction:<\/strong>
North’s hand with its 17 HCP, a solid five-card suit and seven quick tricks is too good to open 1NT. His Double after West’s overcall shows three Spades and a good hand. South’s jump to 3♠ indicates a five-card suit and 8-9 HCP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The start of the play:<\/strong> West leads the Diamond Ace: five, two, four. West continues with the King: eight, nine, Jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How declarer wins his contact:<\/strong> East’s Diamond two at trick one shows count. When he plays the nine on the second round, it is obviously his highest card and a clear suit preference:<\/strong> East certainly wants to signal that he has the Queen of Hearts. Our Santa Claus is very attentive and disciplined, so he switches to the eight of Hearts<\/strong>, won by the Ace in dummy. Declarer plays a trump to his King and West wins with the Ace and insists with another Heart. Dummy’s King wins the trick and declarer can claim the rest: after two more rounds of trumps, he plays a Club to dummy and discards his Heart loser on a Club. Do you see how this contract could have been beaten?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

West’s error:<\/strong> He took note of his partner’s (quite unnecessary) suit preference and switched to a Heart without realizing that, obviously, he would never have enough time to set up a trick in that suit.<\/strong> In doing so he gave all the necessary time to declarer to draw trumps and discard his loser on dummy’s splendid (and very visible!) Clubs. If he had better analyzed the situation, he would have realized that the only hope of beating this came from the trump suit:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • If his partner had any honor there, even stiff, the contract was bound to go down without him doing anything special.<\/li>
  • If partner had no trump honor, the contract could still go down if he had the Spade nine <\/strong>doubleton \u2026 but only if West could put it to work!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    What he should have done:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rather than exiting with a Heart at trick three, he should have continued with a Diamond, not worrying about the ruff and discard and then insisted with another Diamond<\/strong> after getting in with the Ace of trumps. By choosing this defense, he could have offered his partner the possibility of ruffing with the nine of Spades<\/strong>. Declarer could then overruff, but with an honor, allowing Santa’s ten of Spades to be promoted to the setting trick.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In conclusion:<\/strong> In previous articles we have seen the advantages we could get from correct signaling because it gives partner the information he needs to find the best defense. But signaling does not solve all defensive problems. In the above example, our unfortunate hero should have thought more by himself rather than only relying on the interpretation of a card played by his partner. In bridge, nothing should be systematic and reflection must always take precedence over automatisms, especially when on defense. Sometimes, as here, it will be up to one of the two defenders to actively take over the defense<\/strong> for them to find a way to beat the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
