Without much conviction you ask for the Queen. As was to be expected, East covers with the King and , having nothing to gain – and even everything to lose – by cutting enemy communications on the first trick, you go up with the Ace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s the situation for your winners?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now you have ten with four Spades, three Clubs, two Hearts and the Ace of Diamonds. You are missing two and even if the Heart Queen does not fall, the classic play with nine cards of cashing the Ace and King of trumps will easily provide them. This is exactly what happens: on the second round of Hearts, East discards the two of Diamonds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Take stock before you act<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To avoid losing two tricks, you need to discard your two small Diamonds without losing time on dummy’s winners in Clubs and Spades without West being able to ruff. In other words, it is indispensable that he has at least two Clubs and three Spades. If that is not the case, you can’t escape going down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first glance, it seems to be the Clubs, since you are shorter there (five cards compared to seven in Spades). But this is an optical illusion because even if you throw a first Diamond on the Queen of Clubs but West then ruffs the third Spade, this won’t be of much help. In reality, it is an absolute necessity that West has three Spades; so that’s the suit that you have to start with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How will you benefit from this play?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since you have seven cards in Spades out of thirteen including the four top honors you can discover the distribution of the suit, which would not be the case in Clubs when you start with Ace-King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You therefore cash the King-Queen-Jack of Spades without a ruff(assumption of necessity). And now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • If the suit was 3-3, you now cash your Clubs, hoping that West has at least three, and then the Ace of Spades.<\/li>
  • But what if West has four Spades? Then you cross to dummy with the Ace of Clubs, then cash the Ace of Spades to safely discard a first Diamond from your hand and only then play the King and Queen of Clubs to get rid of your last losing Diamond. West may well ruff the third round, it’s too late! Contract made.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n

    Note that if you had started by playing Clubs, West would have ruffed the third round and you would have gone down because he could have cashed a Diamond trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To summarize, for you to come out of this deal as the winner, it is indispensable that West holds three or four Spades and that the number of his Spades and Clubs totals at least six (either four Spades and two Clubs or three Spades and three Clubs).<\/p>\n\n\n
