It was invented in 1957 by the Americans Alvin Roth and Tobias Stone at the time of the launch of the first satellite, and then very quickly baptized by their compatriot Oswald Jacoby. When an opponent overcalls 1♠ after an opening of 1! or 1♦, a 1♥ response beco-mes impossible. Sputnik, one of the oldest conventions, thus replaces this 1♥ bid with a Double:<\/p>\n\n\n

1. Conditions of use<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In competitive auctions we see the concept of “free bids” appear. North must reply 1♥ to an opening of 1♣️ or 1♦ with 5-7HCP in order to reach game opposite 18-19HCP. After the overcall, this is no longer necessary. South now gets to speak again and will be able to show his strength. Sometimes the response of 1♥ can also be tactical, with a very weak hand, to hinder the opponents in their quest for a game contract or a bet-ter low-level part-score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is more to gain than to lose by re-ponding 1♥ to 1♣️<\/strong>. But these weak bids are no longer possible after the 1♠ overcall: North must pass. Hence a first fundamental principle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rule<\/strong><\/p>You need at least four Hearts and at least 7-8HCP to double the 1♠ overcall.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Sputnik Double is conventional and must not replace a satisfactory natural call. With five Hearts and 11+HCP or six Hearts and 8-10 HCP, responder bids his Hearts on the two-level.<\/p>\n\n\n

In the same vein, if the Sputnik Double replaces the 1♥ bid, it cannot be justified when responder is about to make a bid other than 1♥ in response to the opening, despite his four Heart cards.<\/p>\n\n\n

Hence this second fundamental principle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rule<\/strong><\/p>When the opponent overcalls 1♠ and responder has 11+HCP, his priority is to show his suits (five cards or more) at the two-level.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

We can therefore formulate this definition of a simple Sputnik Double: The Sputnik Double promises either 8+HCP (with no upper limit) and four Hearts or 7-10HCP and five Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n

2. Opener\u2019s actions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Opener\u2019s priority is to raise the Hearts shown by his partner\u2019s Double when he has four cards. The minimum range for a Sputnik Double is two points higher than the one for a 1♥. reply. It follows that the point ranges for opener\u2019s raises are changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • At the two-level:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    With 12-14HCP balanced or 11-12HCP unbalanced.<\/p>\n\n\n

              1) After the start 1m-1♠, the Double promises four Hearts and at least 8HCP without upper limit. By inference, the cue-bid (2♠) categorically denies four Hearts.<\/p>

              2) After the start 1m-1♠-Double, opener raises Hearts to the appropriate level if he has four cards unless holding 18-19 HCP balanced where he starts with a cue-bid of 2♠ before possibly jumping to 4♥.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

              B. The sequence 1♦-2♣️<\/strong>-Double<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

              Introduction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

              In this section you will find the basics of what you need to know about one of the most difficult sequences in the field of competitive auctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              1. Conditions of use<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

              At least one four-card major, 8+HCP, with no upper limit. In the lower range from 8-10HCP, responder has either both majors or one major and four Diamonds in order to maximize his chances of finding an eight-card fit.<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  After 1m-1♠-Double opener must not systematically jump to 3NT whenever he has a Spade stopper and sufficient strength to play game. If he has three Hearts, he can opt for a cue-bid (2♠) in search of a 5-3 Heart fit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

                                  <\/div>\n\n\n\n

                                  Remember<\/strong><\/p>

                                  1) After 1♦-2♣️<\/strong>, responder must not blindly double with a four-card major and a hand with 8+HCP. If he has a minimum (8-9HCP), he needs a \u201cparachute\u201d (four Diamonds) in order to double. Otherwise, he has to pass in order to avoid ending up playing without a fit at the three-level.<\/p>

                                  2) After the start 1♣️<\/strong>-1♦, the overwhelming majority of the champions do not play \u201cla collante\u201d (1M= five cards in the major) in order not to be reduced to silence when they have 8-10HCP, no four-card major and no Diamond stopper. In that situation, they double.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

                                  <\/div>\n\n\n\n

                                  C. After an overcall at the one-level<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                                  1. 1♣️<\/strong>-1♦-Double<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

                                  a. Conditions of use<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  The general idea of the Sputnik Double stays the same: it is used when there is no satisfactory natural bid available. With that in mind it is easy to understand that the double denies four Hearts and four Spades – after all responder has plenty of space to bid 1♥or 1♠.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  It is done with balanced hands that don\u2019t have a Diamond holding that justifies a bid in No-trump. In the original definition, it showed a hand with 8-10HCP. It is recommended to use it without an upper limit and thus to use the definition of unlimited strength for all Doubles by responder.<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  \n
                                  \"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

                                  It would be a pity to pass: your side is in the offensive position and it\u2019s possible that West will make 1 Diamond while you can make 1NT, 2NT or even 3NT but opener cannot re-open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  That\u2019s the reason why neither the convention called \u201cLa collante\u201d in France (\u201cthe sticky one\u201d, nickname \u201cflykiller\u201d), promising exactly four cards in the suit immediately above opponent\u2019s (here Hearts), nor a Double promising both four-card majors can be kept for use.<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  You are ready to bid game quickly: either by directly jumping to 3NT or by first cue-bidding 2♦.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  <\/div>\n\n\n\n

                                  Note for advanced players<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  Under these conditions, the cue-bid of 2♦ directly over 1♦ is no longer necessary to ask for a stopper (Double, then 2♦ in this case) nor to show a forcing raise in Clubs (Double then a jump to 3♣️<\/strong><\/strong>, for example). Some use it as a transfer with a six-card Heart suit. My preference is to use the cue-bid to show a two-suiter with 5-5 in the majors in a range of 6-9HCP because otherwise these hands are not strong enough to show in competitive auctions.                                   opener will rebid 1NT whenever he has 12-14 HCP and a balanced hand, no matter if he has a major and no matter if he has a Diamond stopper.<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  Under these conditions, a rebid of 1♥ or 1♠shows an unbalanced or semi-unbalanced hand.<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  With strong hands, opener has the usual choice of weapons: a jump rebid, the cue-bid looking for a stopper, reverses into two of a major (game forcing), or a jump to 2NT with 18-19 balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n

If he has a balanced minimum, he will hide it and say 1NT, with or without stopper in the opponent\u2019s suit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

                                  <\/div>\n\n\n\n

                                  2. 1♣️<\/strong><\/strong>(♦)-1♥-Double<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

                                  a. Conditions of use<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  In the same vein as before, the Double denies four Spades and promises at least 8HCP and a balanced hand with which one cannot or does not want to bid No-trumps.<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  \n

                                  A No-trump contract must be played by partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  b. Opener\u2019s actions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  Despite the absence of a Heart stopper, the response of 1NT is mandatory; 1♠ would show a two-suited hand.<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  3. 1♥-1♠-Double<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

                                  a. Conditions of use<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  When opener\u2019s suit is a major, responder\u2019s attitude is changed: his priority is to show a fit if he has one. The point ranges for raises stay the same as without an overcall. 2♥ is a free bid, 8-10 points and three trumps. 2NT stays a conventional bid, showing three or four trumps in a range of 11- (bad) 14 points, distribution included. The jump to 3♥ is a mixed raise, with four trumps and 8-10 points. Finally, the cue-bid at 2♠ promises a four-card fit and 14+ points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  Under these conditions, it is clear that the Double denies any of the above cited hands but it can hide three-card support in a hand worth 15 points or more:<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  However, most of the time the Double is made with either a balanced hand of 8+HCP with no upper limit, or with a semi-balanced hand of 8-10HCP.<\/p>\n\n\n

                                  A rebid of 1NT, showing 12-14HCP balanced, does not guarantee a Spade stopper. On the contrary bids of 2NT (17-18HCP) and 3NT (19-20HCP balanced) do guarantee it. North never passes 2NT. The cue-bid is game forcing, either balanced without a Spade stopper or a hand with a singleton in a minor and no other satisfactory bid.<\/p>\n\n\n
