Be careful, do not think that your opponents are in the middle of a misunderstanding, the North Americans Kranyak and Demuy form a young and talented pair; they certainly often play on the edge, but they know what they are doing. What have you learned at the end of this long sequence? In order to suggest Six Spades without confirmation of a fit, North must have a very one-sided two suiter with seven good Spades, a Club void that he clearly showed with his 6♣️ bid and, as a corollary, a two card Diamond fit. South has a solid Diamond suit (he repeated his suit five times: 2♦️, 3♦️, 4♦️, 6♦️ and 7♦️), a stopper in Clubs and no interest at all in playing a Spade contract. He would have been happy to play 6 Diamonds but certainly not 6 Spades. Voil\u00e0. Now you have all the elements, and you are in the seat of Thomas Bessis, firmly convinced that the choice of opening lead will be decisive. To find the right opening lead you have to imagine declarer\u2019s plan and fight effectively against it. Leading the King of Clubs is neutral \u2013 not a good idea here. Leading a trump deprives dummy of one of its possibilities to ruff. This trick can make the difference at the time of comparing scores. But the analysis is incomplete. Declarer has a much better plan than ruffing in the short hand: establish dummy\u2019s Spades.<\/strong> If you remember that his trumps are solid and that there is little risk of a trump promotion, he will most probably succeed despite the bad (7-4-1-1) Spade split. In order to prevent that you have to attack his communications and start with a Heart, which Thomas did brilliantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South\u2019s Club stopper was thin. On a trump lead, South wins, plays a Spade to the Ace and a Spade ruffed high, Club ruff, another Spade ruffed high, and the Heart Ace is still there to get back to dummy and cash the established Spades. On a Heart lead, South can ruff two Clubs, but that is not enough: only twelve tricks, one down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My advice<\/strong><\/p>

Information rich<\/strong>. Detailed auctions that lead to game contracts or, especially slams, are always rich in information, so use that to your advantage. Being neutral is not the top priority anymore when you think about the goal of your opening lead.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

It should not be a problem for you to choose which suit to lead. You have encountered several similar situations where your partner doubled a game contract that was bid offensively in order to ask you for a specific lead. Here, this lead directing double asks for a lead in dummy\u2019s first suit: Spades. Your Hearts take away all doubts about the meaning of the double, if you had any. The choice of card can be discussed. With three cards you need to lead a card that may force dummy \u2013 the nine or higher \u2013 or, if you can\u2019t, give count. Here therefore, leading the 2 is preferable to the 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If East, the Italian-Argentinian Agustin Madala, playing opposite of the Dane Dennis Bilde (two of the best players of the new generation integrated into the Lavazza team), does not double, West will probably lead the 10 of Diamonds rather than the 6 of Hearts, but both leads offer the ninth trick to declarer, Thomas Bessis. Bilde chose to lead the 8 of Spades in accordance with his system, which gives the defense the possibility to establish the suit. Dummy\u2019s 10 is taken with the Jack and then East switches to the Diamond 8, won with the Ace. South could win if he played for King-Queen of Hearts onside, but he plays East for only two Diamonds and plays a Club to the King and then asks for the King of Spades. East wins and persists with another Diamond. Now there is nothing more that can be done. If declarer ducks, West wins and now plays the Heart King, setting up a fifth trick for the defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My advice<\/strong><\/p>

No certainty.<\/strong> Looking at the full deal, you can but appreciate East\u2019s Double. Looking at his cards he has no certainty that this contract will fail, but his decision, albeit on the edge, is a very good and pragmatic call for two reasons:<\/em><\/p>

1) He likes no other lead.<\/em><\/p>

2) The opponents have limited the strength of their hands (response of 1NT and a non-forcing two-suiter).<\/em><\/p>

Two deals later, Madala doubles the 3 No-Trump contract bid by our French pair, C\u00e9dric Lorenzini and Thomas Bessis. The situation is less clear-cut than in the previous deal. 2NT is a natural game invitation. North probably accepts on the strength of his six-card Spade suit. East has certainly doubled because he has some kind of a Spade stopper, but mostly because of high card points. A Diamond lead will probably establish four tricks, that\u2019s tempting, but it will also often give away a trick \u2013 you\u2019d have to hope that it\u2019s not the ninth. Leading a Spade is to blindly obey partner, but also to trust that the contract will go down naturally \u2013 that\u2019s reasonable not only if East has doubled because of strength, but also if he asked for the Spade lead. Difficult decision. Verdict to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis Bilde led the Jack of Diamonds, for Thomas\u2019 King. Jack of Spades taken with the Queen, Ace-King of Spades: they are not 3-3. Declarer now had to finesse against King of Clubs and find Clubs 3-3 for a thunderous +750, but if the King of Clubs is badly placed, it\u2019s five down; -1400! The victorious roar of Thomas, aware of being on the edge of an abyss, shook the walls. The fact remains that on a Spade lead did well to double because of his strength, and Spade holding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My advice<\/strong><\/p>

Strong opposition.<\/strong> A game contract that is bid in offense can be doubled \u201cby listening\u201d when the opponents have limited their strength and you have a strong holding in their long suits. In a sequence like 1♦️<\/em>-Pass-1♥️<\/em>-Pass-2♦️<\/em>-Pass-2NT-Pass-3NT, you can double with: ♠️<\/em>A1087 ♥️<\/em>3 ♦️<\/em>QJ96 ♣️<\/em>J985. You don\u2019t necessarily want a Diamond lead, your aim is to significantly increase your score if the contract fails by two or more tricks.<\/em><\/p>

You don\u2019t need to do a very attentive reading of South\u2019s bidding, you\u2019ll easily infer declarer\u2019s distribution with a low risk of error. South has six Clubs, stoppers in Spades and Diamonds and is ambitious to win 3 No-Trump opposite a barely encouraging fit shown by the bid of 3♣️. It\u2019s then child\u2019s play to figure out he has a singleton Heart. Let\u2019s note that if South has only five Clubs and did not want to open 1♦️, his distribution is precisely 3-1-4-5 and that with a balanced distribution and still a non-minimum hand (2-2-6-3, for example), he could have opened 1NT. Therefore, West must lead a Heart, even if that is the only suit bid by the opponents outside Clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Post-mortem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis Bilde leads the Heart 4 as quick as lightning and dummy\u2019s 9 forces the 10. Madala plays the Spade Queen to the King and Ace. It is easy for West to switch back to another Heart; five tricks are now open for the defense. But the play does not quite go like this in reality – the position of the 9 and 10 of Hearts was the other way round. In reality, C\u00e9dric calls for dummy\u2019s 10 at the first trick and East wins with the Queen before switching to the Queen… of Spades. The French champion guesses not to cover with the King and East continues with another Spade. Declarer now follows with the 10 (consistent with himself ) and nine tricks are his. It is too difficult to switch to a small Diamond after the Queen of Spades, under-leading the Ace and leaving declarer a 50-50 chance to get it right and win… On the other hand, if C\u00e9dric covers the Spade Queen with the King and West wins with the Ace and now continues with the 7 of Spades (count is not a priority in this situation and the 7 denies the 10, which he would have played if he had it), then East takes the Spade Jack and now knows enough to switch to a Diamond to put declarer to a guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My advice<\/strong><\/p>

Decisive factor. <\/em><\/strong>The geographical location of the suits is a decisive factor when choosing the opening lead. A lead through dummy\u2019s suit is always effective when declarer is short in that suit. Think of it when declarer has shown two suits and then bid No-Trump.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Against No-Trump, it is possible and even recommended to lead one of dummy\u2019s suits if you know that declarer has shortness there. That\u2019s the case when he first shows a two-suiter and then bids No-Trump. You could even think of leading an honor in order to capture a possible high singleton in declarer\u2019s hand.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
