Respond 1NT with a weak hand

Let’s start by explaining why it is useful to respond to an opening at the one-level, even with very weak hands. Remember that these ambiguous openings can be very strong: An opening bid at the one-level can go up to 22HCP. With strong two-suited hands, you should avoid opening with a strong 2♣️. Therefore, opener can have hands with a very high potential if he finds a fit in one of his two suits. That’s why we show a fit with weak hands (6 points +, distribution included), we respond 1NT from 5-6 points on and we bid a new suit at the one-level with at least 4-5 HCP, especially with an Ace.

But be aware that the desire not to miss out on bidding and making a game contact is not the only reason for bidding with weak hands. You can absolutely choose to bid with a weak hand to make your opponents’ life harder ! either with a preemptive bid or with a simple 1NT.

In any case, if you decide to bid when you don’t have a lot of points, you need to be as careful as possible not to encourage your partner too much. Let’s look at the situa-tions in which you should answer with weak hands.

1. Bidding a new suit at the one-level

This can be done automatically when you have 5 HCP or more. We are therefore going to focus on slightly weaker hands. What reasons could encourage you to bid with less than the required 5 HCP?

There are three of them:

Play a better contract than the one you would play if you passed in reply to the opening bid. For example, you hold a sin-gleton in the suit of the opening bid and five cards in a major.

Play a game contract because opposite you find a fit and a strong hand when your hand although weak, is very unbalanced, which gives it good potential.

Occupy the land. It’s harder for your LHO to bid in the sandwich position after 1♣️-Pass-1♠️ then in the pass-out position after 1♣️-Pass-Pass.

Hand 1 :

Hand 2 :

With hand 1, you do not want to pass over the opening bid of 1♣️. You could go down in 1Club when a part-score or even game in Spades could be lay-down if North has the following hand: ♠️AQ82 ♥️AKQ ♦️A3 ♣️9864.

With hand 2, you can make game with even less points if you find a double fit. Here, to make 4 Spades (even 5), it is enough to find North with: ♠️AK75 ♥️4 ♦️AQ953 ♣️864.

Over an opening bid of 1♣️ it happens that you don’t have any hope of winning a game but you don’t want to pass because you are short in Clubs. With Club shortness and four cards in both majors, it is more reasonable to bid 1♦️. For example, with the following hand: ♠️Q875 ♥️J974 ♦️J953 ♣️4, if you respond 1♥️ your partner could propel you to game if he has a strong hand with a Heart fit. However, you neither want to pass and play 1 Club, nor to end up in a game contract. When you bid 1♦️, your partner will often rebid a major on the one-level, even with 18 HCP, and then you can pass and be in a more reasonable contract.

2. But we will see that it is also possible to bid with weak hands with only three trumps.

Hand 1 :

Hand 2 :

With hand 1, you make the very classic bid of 4♠️ despite its weakness. This bid is based on the number of your trumps and the principle of distributional security. You tell your partner that you have five trumps and a weak hand. Either you make 4 Spades and you did well by bidding game, or you will go down ! but in that case the opponents had a contract that would give them more points than the doubled undertricks in 4 Spades.

With hand 2, you need to respond 2♥️ even if you only have 3HCP. You don’t have to be ashamed of your bid with your singleton and your nine-card fit. If North then jumps to game or simply invites after your 2♥️ bid, you are not in danger with your hand, whether it’s at the three-or four-level.

As far as fits are concerned, the most dangerous is to raise with weak hands (3 to 5-6HCP) and three trumps. Indeed, finding the fit often leads the opener to reevaluate his hand. This could make him very optimistic when you just wanted to annoy your opponents and only want to play game if parnter has a super maximum (a hand that becomes game forcing opposite any response with 19 HCP and more). With the following hand: ♠️K75 ♥️8742 ♦️53 ♣️J986, you want to respond without overly encouraging partner. Over the opening bid of 1♠️, it is more reasonable to bid 1NT to let opener believe that you don’t have a fit. Then he can’t jump to 4♠️ with 17HCP and a singleton. He will be happy with a non-forcing bid to show a two-suiter and you can make him believe that you are making a simple 2♠️ preference with two cards. Even if he then bids again because of his 17HCP, you’ll repeat the suit at 3♠️ to show a very weak hand. The other interesting consequence of the 1NT bid is that the opponents also believe that you don’t have a fit, which makes them less likely to intervene.

Finally, if opener has a very strong hand, for example 20HCP and a 5-5 two-suiter, he’ll jump into his second suit and you can then bid game, happy that you did not pass.

Over a 1♥️ opening you can do the same thing, but then you have two bids at your disposal: 1♠️ with Spades or 1NT without Spades. It is, however, less dangerous to bid 1♠️ because you know that your partner will not pass when he could well do so over 1NT.

Multiple benefits

Answer with “nothing” in order to look for a better contract (you have a void in partner’s suit!), not to miss a game (you have a long suit in a major and an unbalanced hand; your partner can have up to 22 HCP, etc.), but also to annoy the opponents (that’s better done at favorable vulnerability…).

3. Respond 1NT with a weak hand

You have just seen you can reply 1NT with weak hands and a three-card fit (or even four trumps and a completely flat distribution). It also happens that we deviate from the sacred rule of needing at least 6HCP for a 1NT bid with other hands, in particular single-suited hands. Take this hand: ♠️5 ♥️QJ8742 ♦️53 ♣️J986. Is it necessary to pass the opening of 1♠️ on the pretext that one does not have the 6HCP required to bid 1NT? No, once again, you must come forward to improve the part-score. It is better to play a part-score in the long suit of the weak hand or even find a good 4 Hearts if North has a strong hand with at least a small fit in Hearts. Whatever North’s rebid over 1NT, you’ll show your Hearts. Even over 3NT, for example, you will bid 4♥️.

This logic does not only apply to a one-sui-ter in Hearts over the opening of 1♠️. You can very well do just the same over 1♦️ or 1♥️ openings. For example, when the opening bid is 1♥️, and you have the following hand: ♠️1052 ♥️3 ♦️73 ♣️KJ98642, you can respond 1NT to be sure not to play 1 Heart.

Being able to stop low

If you decide to respond with a very weak hand, make sure (as far as possible) to be able to moderate partner’s enthusiasm later, otherwise you risk sinking your ship…

What do you think of this article by Wilfried Libbrecht ?

Please share your view with other bridge players in the Comments section below!

We will look at a problem that has existed since the dawn of time… of bridge: Should you respond to an opening at the one-level with a weak or even very weak hand?
