The challenge posed by bridge is never-ending. Each new hand presents you with a different set of problems to solve. How can you raise the level of your game?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#1 Join a Club<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you want to get better at bridge, your first move should be to join a Bridge Club.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is sure to be one in your area and you can be certain of a friendly welcome. If you don’t have a regular partner the club will almost certainly be able to provide you with one. Your game is likely to improve with regular practice and the social element should not be underestimated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At many clubs, when you join you will automatically become a member of your countries Bridge Federation. This will confer a number of benefits, including the opportunity to play in a wide range of tournaments and to win Master Points, which help to measure your progress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#2 Engage your Brain<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bridge is full of rules and maxims \u2013 eight ever, nine never, third hand high, cover an honor with an honor<\/em> and so on.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try to assimilate information from the bidding as it unfolds – a player who opens 1♥️ and then rebids 2♣️ should have at least five hearts and four clubs, leaving them with a maximum of four cards in spades and diamonds. By the same token, if your partner starts the defence by leading a low card in a suit you will know that they don’t have a strong sequence such as KQJ.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#3 Concentration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you want to drive a taxi in London you have to pass an exam to show that you can locate any street within the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This mammoth task is called ‘The Knowledge’ and can take 3-4 years of study. Becoming a good bridge player also requires a lot of effort. Legendary World Champion Benito Garozzo has been playing for more than 70 years and claims he still learns something new every day!Becoming a good player means acquiring the ability to think about all 52 cards, not merely the ones in your own hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can become quite good without bothering, but to make real progress you have to make the effort. There is no need to be a genius! The bidding and early play will frequently establish the distribution of the cards around the table. Sometimes this calculation will be easier for the defenders than for declarer. No special skill is required in order to do this, but the effort of doing so on hand-after-hand is considerable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Even the greatest champions find it difficult to maintain their concentration and it is during a lapse that mistakes are likely to be made. Terence Reese said that a player who could count was one in a thousand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In The Mammoth Book of Bridge<\/em> I suggested that a player who can count and concentrate is perhaps one in ten thousand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#4 Conventions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

If Shakespeare had played bridge, he would doubtless have penned the line, There are more conventions in heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some are useful, but don’t employ too many, especially those with a low frequency, which you might forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s much more important to be confident about the things that occur frequently than to master some complex idea that will only turn up once in a blue moon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#5 Study<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In one issue of the now defunct European Bridge they published a survey answered by many of the world’s top players in which they were asked about the best way to improve. Almost universally they answered with a single word: Read!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Books on card play and defence are almost timeless and reading the classics is sure to improve the way you approach these elements of the game. Here is a relatively short list of books that I guarantee will improve your play and enjoyment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t expect to remember everything you read in these books – but by returning to them from time to time you will improve your knowledge and understanding of the game. I’ll give you just one illustration.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was at the start of my bridge career, playing in an important event. On one hand I held ♦️AQ6. Partner led this suit against 3NT and dummy had ♦️85. I had the wit to put in the queen and declarer won with the king. When my partner regained the lead he played another diamond and we were able to cash four tricks in the suit and defeat the contract. Had the tournament taken place a day earlier I would doubtless have put up the ace, enabling declarer to hold up the king and subsequently secure nine tricks. However, the night before I had read Card Play Technique<\/em> which describes this elementary defensive stratagem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many newspapers carry bridge columns – they often show deals which include a technical point you might not have seen before and they help to keep you sharp.Reading is not the only option available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this Internet age you can discover a huge amount about the game – and a lot of it is totally free! Peter Hollands, a young Australian International has posted a huge amount of material. One of the world’s top players, Andrew Robson, offers a daily bridgecast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#6 Practise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Obviously the more deals you play the more problems you will have to solve. Once you feel reasonably competent, ask a better player to have a game with you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having the opportunity to talk about bridge with an expert is priceless. You might not remember everything, but what you do is sure to improve your results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don’t feel able to do that, don’t be afraid to ask a good player questions about the best way to approach certain aspects of the game, especially those that are causing you problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are very ambitious you might consider playing with a professional, or asking them to coach you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Playing in your club is not the only way to stay sharp. You can play and practise on the Internet and you can also see the stars in action. Watching top-class players is an excellent way to improve your game – you can do that ‘at the table’ or by following tournaments online. Bridge Base Online and Funbridge both show events involving some of the world’s best players and you will usually find that there is spoken\/written commentary by a team of expert commentators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also practice alone. Here’s one idea you might try, with or without your partner (it was used by the famous Italian Blue Team) to practise your slam bidding. Remove all the cards from 2-7 from the pack, then deal two hands of 13 cards and bid them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#7 Analyze your Results<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the computer age it has become common-place to be able to get a copy of the hands you have just played at the end of each session. Make sure you (and your partner) take one so that you can study the deals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try competing in what are known as Simultaneous events<\/em>, where the same deals are played by thousands of pairs from around the world. At the end you will usually receive a booklet in which every deal is analyzed by an expert.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#8 Top Tips<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Having watched the last day of the Masters in Augusta, I have often thought how the scoring in golf reflects that in bridge. Why is it that a player can shoot 65 one day and 75 the next? How can you score 67% one day and 47% the next? If only a player could bring his or her best game to the course or table every time it was needed!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never arrive at the table in a rush.<\/strong> Always allow yourself plenty of time, especially if any degree of travelling is involved. If you can, walk to the venue \u2013 the fresh air will clear your mind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Well before play is due to begin take a look at your system, just to remind yourself about the key points.<\/strong> You will feel comfortable, especially if you need to employ any relatively rare agreements. You don\u2019t think this is necessary? In a Reisinger semi final we missed a slam because of a mix up over the responses to RKCB – I couldn\u2019t remember if we were playing 4130 or 3041!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Arrive at the table a few minutes before game time and settle down.<\/strong> Check your bidding box to make sure you it’s complete. The idea is to get into a cocoon of concentration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

When you are dummy – relax!<\/strong> Apart from making sure partner does not commit a mechanical error this is the chance to take a breather and get ready for the next deal. Never discuss a deal with partner or the opponents until the session is completed. Even if you want to discuss a bidding situation the best time to do it is at the end of the session and especially not during the hospitality break.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As soon as a deal has been completed you should erase it from you memory<\/strong> – there is nothing you can do to change the result and the most important thing is the new deal that you are about to play. In a team game there is always a chance that your other pair will cover for you. I recall an incident where we bid to the worst of three possible grand slams and conceded -50. When we scored up the deal, team mates announced \u2018+50\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Oh, they were one down in Seven Diamonds as well?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018No, they were one down in Two Spades.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Pairs game assume that during the session you will have four terrible boards<\/strong>\u2013 either because of your own mistakes, or through the skill (and sometimes luck) of your opponents. That way you won\u2019t get upset by a bad result – you had already allowed for it. I once had a session when the first four boards were all zeros. But with those out of the way the rest was a breeze!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
