When you play a diamond at trick two, West rises with the A&#x2666; and switches to the 8&#x2660;. You put in the 9&#x2660; from dummy and East wins with the 10&#x2660;. Back comes the 6&#x2665; and you rise with the Q&#x2665;, which West allows to win after some thought. Had he covered with his K&#x2665;, you would have had enough entries to establish the diamonds and get back to hand to cash them. Now, although you know more or less the whole hand, that does not help much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You play the K&#x2666; but the queen fails to miraculously appear. You cash your two high clubs but, as expected, East discards a spade on the third round. The best you can do now is to cash the major-suit aces and exit with a club, throwing a diamond, West will eventually have to lead away from his K&#x2665;-10&#x2665; at the end, giving you a third heart trick. Unfortunately, the defenders have scored five tricks and you are one down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the contract could have been made. Did you spot the key moment of the deal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must unblock the K&#x2666; under the ace at trick two. No matter how the defenders play thereafter, you cannot then be prevented from scoring three diamonds, three clubs, two hearts and one spade. Bridge is a difficult enough game but, if you are playing on autopilot, the chances are that the key moments of the trickier deals will pass you by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that West could have avoided giving you this chance by ducking the first diamond.
