I discovered this convention when I was playing with friends from Bordeaux. They themselves had previously found it in the system of the Italian champions who had the idea of giving additional meaning to 2NT in the following sequence:

I think, like many of us, that the Italians realized that the bids at our disposal to support Hearts were not sufficient.

1. Reminder of the classical system and its main inconvenience

The classic system places hands with a four-card fit in the first zone. However, what mostly happens is that opener has three-card support and you will see that when it comes to treating that case and some others, the system is very poor.

Let me introduce you to what is known as the “Standard French for competition”:

2NT : three-card Heart support, but not strong enough for a game-force.

3♥️ : all game-forcing hands that don’t fit into any of the precise bids presented here.

4♣️(♦️) : Splinter showing a hand in the first zone (11-13HCP) with four trumps and shortness in the named suit.

4♥️ : four trumps, no shortness (the-refore 5-4-2-2) and first zone (11-13HCP).

Reading this list, you realize that 3♥️ is a catch-all bid into which we stuff all the hands with which we want to play game or even slam. This means we can use this bid just as well with 13HCP, three trumps and a singleton; with 17HCP, four trumps with or without a singleton; or also with 19HCP with three trumps. So, how should the responder react to such a bid? The big gap between all these hands makes it difficult for the responder to make a decision. For example, with ♠️7 ♥️AQ975 ♦️KJ86 ♣️A96, what should North do when he hears 3♥️? Should he start to cue-bid? Suggest a nebulous 3NT? Sign off at 4♥️?

Signing off at 4♥️ would be very pessimistic since opener could have only 12HCP, but he could also have just the right cards to make a slam, such as ♠️AK654 ♥️K83 ♦️Q942 ♣️2.

It would be unreasonable to start cue-bid-ding, because opener could have a mi-nimum hand with Diamond shortness, which would make responders hand average, at best.

As you can see, responder needs a more precise idea of opener’s hand to make his decision. Hence the interest in playing the convention and the developments that we are going to suggest:

2. Presentation of our innovation

To ease the memory effort, it was decided that all the auctions previoulsy mentioned would guarantee four-card support. So, we have:

3♥️: four trumps, 14+HCP (followed by a relay at 3♠️ to know more about the distribution: opener then bids 3NT with a 5-4-2-2 or 4♣️/♦️ with a shortness).

4♣️(♦️): Splinter showing a hand in the first zone (11-13HCP) with four trumps and shortness in the named suit.

4♥️: four trumps, no shortness (the-refore 5-4-2-2) and the first zone (11-13HCP).

This solves the problem of hands with four trumps in a better way. However, what about hands with three-card support, which are not found in this list? This is the main improvement, because hands with a three-card fit are the ones that are the least well treated in the standard French system. The idea is simply that the 2NT rebid shows either a true 2NT rebid (traditionally 15-17HCP if you don’t open 1NT with five card majors, but the strength can vary depending on your system), or any hand with three-card support. Of course, to find out more, opener will use a relay with 3♣️.

Here are the developments that I suggest:

3♦️: regular hand with 15-17HCP and a doubleton Heart (that way res-ponder can bid 3♥️ with a six-card suit or a minor to set another trump suit).

3♥️: three-card fit, 11-14 (3♠️ relay: 3NT balanced or 4♣️/♦️ shortness).

3♠️: three-card fit, 15+HCP, balanced

3NT: balanced hand, 15-17HCP, two small Hearts.

4♣️/♦️: Splinter: 15+HCP, three-card support and shortness in the named suit.

4NT: balanced, 18-19HCP with a doubleton honor in Hearts (with two small Hearts, we would bid 3NT directly over 2♥️).

As you can see, this system is very comprehensive. But I already told you, you can take the general idea and give the meaning you want to different bids according to your choice of system (if you systemically open 1NT with 15-16(17) and a five-card major, 2 over 1 Game-forcing or a rebid of 2NT showing a 12-14H hand).

Let’s see some examples of sequences to show you the mechanism and the advantages of this new system.

Auctions #1

Opener’s 3♥️ rebid shows a hand with 14+HCP and four trumps. 3♠️ is a relay to find out about distribution. 4♦️ shows Diamond shortness. After the response to 4NT, East sees all that he needs (14+HCP, four trumps, Diamond shortness, four key-cards) and can jump to 7♥️ without a problem. In Seven Hearts, it is enough that Hearts are not 4-0. During the sequence, East obtains all the information that allows him to conclude at 7♥️: four tru-mps and 14+ HCP (3♥️), 5-4-2-2 distribution and therefore a doubleton Diamond (3NT), a Diamond control, which therefore must be the Ace (4♦️), three key-cards (5♣️) and the Queen of Hearts (6♥️).

Between three and four

Being able to differentiate between eight and nine-card fits is essential in the slam zone.
