I recognise this hand from the first National Pairs League weekend, where my renowned opponent supported to 4♦. The problem is not, of course, the same at IMPs. My chances of taking 4 Hearts down are slim, whereas I will be one or two down in 5 Diamonds. I therefore pre-empt the opponents in 5♦ and hope that that will make them do something silly, such as bid up to 5♥ or forget to double me.”

To say the least, his point of view is hardly shared, other than by Chidiac: “5♦. Saying 4♦ is like flogging a dead horse: pointless! 5♦ might lead to 5♥, which I would double!” and by the members of the Deauville Bridge Club, whom we have the pleasure of honouring in this month’s contest: “5♦. The opponents will bid 4♥, a contract which is a favourite to make. May as well bid 5♦ straightaway and provoke the opponents into potentially going down in 5♥.”

Given that I chose this bid at the table, I am raising the bid’s mark to thank the rare people who have supported me. After that bid, the opponents might make a mistake (which happened against me – they bid up to 5♥ for two down) or not (others had less luck and got doubled in 5♦, losing 300 when 4 Hearts was already going down).

I have also given a bonus to an original bid that I really liked, that of Hervé Pacault: “3♠. 5 Diamonds is certainly going down, whereas 4 Hearts might go down. The possible gain from a 5♦ bid (pushing the opponents up to 5 Hearts, which would be going down with 4 Hearts making) is not sufficient compensation for the loss of a 5-diamond contract going down when 4 Hearts is not making. To get the best chance of making the right decision over 4♥, I bid 3♠, certain of hearing 4♠ over 4♥ if North holds three spades. I will then bid 5♦.”

Indeed, if Partner holds three cards in Spades, the chance of taking 4 Hearts down diminishes greatly. A nice bid, then.

The other bids chosen, pass and 4♦, are, on the contrary, passive bids, based on the speculation that 4 Hearts is going down. Is that winning bridge in the long-term? That is not certain. In any case, it conforms to French style. Here are their arguments.

Lévy: “4♦. We could easily be taking 4 Hearts down.”

Kokish: “4♦. This depends a lot on style. This is one of the worst vulnerabilities for making a sacrifice, the reason being that the 3♦ opening cannot just as well be from QT98xxx as from AQJTxxx… As we might be taking 4 Hearts down and the opponents are unlikely to go to the 5-level, I would not bid 5♦. So 4♦ seems to be the most pragmatic action to take.

Quantin: “4♦. Step One: should you bid again? The comments that follow are all in the same vein: North has shown 6-4 or 6-5 (using general agreements) in Spades and Clubs with ambitions for slam. There are not too many pessimists:

Volcker: “Pass. I have to have good cards to make the contract!”

Duguet: “Pass. Sure, Partner’s sequence shows interest in slam, as he could have jumped to 4♠ straight over 1NT. But the slam he was most seriously picturing, with his 6-5 hand and Ace-empty in Spades, must mostly be 6 Clubs! And perhaps not 6 Spades at all… Could we be mad at him for treating a hand such as ♠ AT8532 ♥ – ♦ J3 ♣ AQ742, with which I am already in danger at the 4-level, in this way? Remember, too, that with a more serious slam try in Spades, he had two other options available:

Starting by prodding with 2♦ (Two-way Checkback) to find out more.

Continuing with 4♥ over 3NT, which can only be interpreted as a stronger 6-5 than 4♠ straightaway.”

Lévy: “Pass. If three useful cards are enough to make slam, North should have gone about this differently.”

So here, I do not agree at all. How should North go about things with ♠ AJ7653 ♥ 6 ♦ 4 ♣ AKQ72 when South could hold ♠ 42 ♥ KQJ9 ♦ KQJ75 ♣ 98? Three important cards when North has denied a proper fit and promised points in the red suits… that is really quite a maximum!

If one does (quite logically, in my view) choose to bid on, which way should one go? An immediate punt for 6 Spades was only selected twice.

Thuillez: “6♠. North’s bidding is clearly a try since he did not go straight to 4♠ over 1NT. I only have 12 HCP but so much cover for North! That should allow us to make twelve tricks. Now, should I say 5♥ to account for him missing the Ace-King of Diamonds? I don’t think so. If North has two small diamonds, those will go away if they do not lead a diamond, which will not be easy for East to do at all if he does not hold Ace-King.”

The other experts all preferred the scientific 5♥ bid to deny a diamond control.

Lorenzini: “5♥. I am not sure that my partner is making a slam try. However, I have very nice cards (three important cards) that my previous bids have not yet shown. Cue showing a heart control, strength in Spades and co-operation for slam, all while denying a diamond control, with the context that North has shown at least six spades and four or five clubs, strong, with slam interest.” As is his wont, Kokish presents some very interesting theory: “5♥. Technical bid allowing him to stop in 5♠ with ♠ AJT763 ♥ – ♦ J3 ♣ AKQ72 or to go to 6 Spades with ♠ AJT763 ♥ K3 ♦ – ♣ KQ732. 6♠ straightaway is a bid to take into consideration in order to not give any indications to the opening leader. The difference between a tactical bid and a technical bid often depends on your position in a match. The technical bid will be chosen by the team who is ahead. Why complicate life when you can simply find out what you want to know? I have checked by counting on my fingers: we will have the space to enquire after the Queen of Trumps. It’s a real shame but I do not have a solution.”

Thank you to Jean-Pierre for having mentioned the possibility of playing in a different suit, which was, for me, the main interesting point about this problem. That is why, despite all the protests I am expecting, I have decided to revalue the grades of the 5♥ and 6♥ bids by the experts who tried to answer the question ‘How do you find a different trump suit for slam in the knowledge that you risk losing two trump tricks by playing in Spades?’. Here are their contributions.

Cronier: “6♥. The fun part of this deal is that it might be right to play in Hearts (with ♠ A753 ♥ KQ8643 ♦ 3 ♣ 76, we are making a grand slam in Hearts and going down in 6 Spades). And the difficulty is that I have absolutely no idea how to go about suggesting that. I have found a way (!). I shall bid 6♥. North will understand that I do not have four cards in Hearts and that this is a choice between 6 Hearts and 6 Spades. I just hope that he won’t think this is Exclusion Blackwood!”

Bessis: “5♥. And it is this last point that is making me bid again. As even if I land badly… Well, I might well land on my feet anyway. The way I play with all my partners, when I bid a third suit in a slam sequence, after already having shown a two-suiter, it is always natural. 5♥ for me at this stage has to show a fragment in Hearts and a club shortage. My partner will then have all the puzzle pieces for being able to judge his cards correctly and I hope that he will consider 6 Hearts if necessary!”

Kokish: “5♥. 5♠ is suitable for showing a problem in Trumps with controls in the other suits. But the problem is that we might not be meant to play in Spades. We might go down in 5 Spades with 6 Diamonds or 6 Hearts cold. 5♥ should not simply be a control but rather a natural slam try encouraging North to look very carefully at his Hearts and Spades. I would have liked very much for the author of the contest to have specified the meaning of the 4♠ bid (a balanced hand, otherwise it would have splintered in 4m).”

Eric’s final remark is also interesting: you need to carefully define the meaning you give to this 4♠ bid.

To keep in mind, then: 4♠ should show a balanced hand (or limited to 4-5-2-2). As much as I know what I play if it is West who intervenes over the transfer and the transfer bidder is the one in the balancing seat, as well as after a different overcall… I don’t have the faintest idea! It seems illogical to consider a 3♣ or 3♦ bid either forcing, rather than non-forcing, or the inverse. It could be anything. With this doubt, I am not saying 3♦ as I am too afraid of accidents. As it is not my style at all to double (take-out) with a void in these types of situations, all I have left is a 3♠ bid, game-forcing and (very) short in Spades by necessity. I admit, finding the best trump suit after that will not necessarily be an easy thing.”

So, though the 3♠ bid was chosen by the majority, it is purely due to the experts wanting to avoid having an accident, as everyone agrees that it is not very practical.

Lévy: “3♠. 3♦ in a competitive situation should not be forcing. As a first move that I will surely follow up with 4♠ on the next round. This bid is forcing to game and has the advantage of allowing us to find an alternative trump fit: we might well make 7 Diamonds and not 7 Hearts, for example. A direct 4♠ bid, although practical, does not allow us to exchange important information for finding the best slam.”

Quantin: “3♠. Here, we have agreed to play 3♦ as competitive. To show a hand, I therefore have the choice between double and a cue bid. Quite clearly, it is out of the question to double with a void.”

Rocafort: “3♠. The lightheadedness that pushes players into getting involved more easily when they are burning up less space is curious; might there be a psychiatrist to explain that? To avoid misunderstandings in this delicate situation. I would prefer to play 3♦ as forcing but Partner might not see things in the same way as I do. A 3♦ bid might well be forcing but the quality of the suit seems to me insufficient for treating the hand as a two-suiter, not just because the best slam might be in Clubs. If my partner has enough to bid 3NT, I will settle for 4♥.”

Even those who did opt for 3♦ have concerns.

Combescure: “3♦. South could hold a weak or intermediate 5-5 or 5-4 hand and be looking for a contract. In theory, a bid that is conventionally forcing becomes non-forcing after an overcall. Here, the delayed overcall affects the theory in the sense that with some strength and Spades, East would have overcalled straightaway. Fearful players will say 3♠ to avoid having an accident but the anguish of missing out on a grand slam in Diamonds forces me to take the risk (of a misunderstanding) by bidding 3♦.”

Kokish: “3♦. That also allows us to find a better slam in Hearts, as long as the 3♦ bid does not exclude Queen-fourth or -fifth.
