<\/div>\n\n\n\n

1. The different systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Diamonds are the unwanted suit of our system, the one that often makes our lives difficult. A 5 5 response to a 4NT inquiry is less pleasant than 5♣️, and 1♦️-1♥️-3♦️ is more difficult to deal with than 1♣️-1♥️-3♣️. The answers to a 2♦️ opening bid unfortunately raise the bidding level whereas a 2! opening brings much more flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under these conditions, some have chosen to reverse the two strong openings, 2♣️ and 2♦️, 2♣️ becoming game-forcing and 2♦️ semi-forcing. Others have started to use 2♣️ as a catch-all, covering game forcing hands as well as semi-forcing ones – an imperfect solution and above all too difficult to master, at least for me. Some others, who love to play some form of Gazzilli, have completely suppressed the semi-forcing opening, satisfied with a game-forcing 2♣️. 2♦️ then becomes either a weak two in Diamonds just like 2♥️ or 2♠️ or a balanced hand with 18-19 HCP, \u201cItalian style\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have tried each of these different systems, to come to the conclusion that our good old \u201cFrench\u201d system, 2♣️ semi-forcing together with a game-forcing 2♦️ is the best solution. Here are some of the reasons<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) A semi-forcing 2♣️ covers a pretty large zone (18-23 HCP) and is therefore much more frequently used than a 2♦️, game-forcing with 24+HCP or the equivalent in trick count. One cannot do without it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) The 2♦️ opening is particularly harmful to setting Hearts as the trump suit. Tostart the biding with 2♦️-2♥️-3♥️ leaves no flexibility whatsoever for showing a fit. If you play 2♦️ as game-forcing, but take out the Hearts, the developments are as simple and easy to master after 2♦️ as when you use 2♣️ as game forcing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) To use 2♦️ as semi-forcing makes it impossible to bid 2♣️-2♦️-2♥️, the immediate consequence is the elimination of strong openings in the minors. By exchanging 2! and 2″ you lose more than you win, so all you need to do is solve the problem with the Hearts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is what I propose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Reminder of the definition of a semi-forcing 2♣️<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The classic semi-forcing 2♣️ opening covers several types of hands, that are all precisely defined and most often shown with the first rebid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a) Rebids of 2♥️<\/strong><\/strong> and 2♠️<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They show either a six-card suit and 18-21 HCP or a five-card suit and 21-23 HCP. Two-suiters with a 5-4 are authorized (21-23 HCP), but 6-4 is forbidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n

b) Rebid at 2NT (22-23 HCP, balanced).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

The strength and distribution of the hand are shown in a more precise way than by a 2♥️<\/strong> rebid. An example chosen with premeditation, soon there will be no alternative!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

c) Rebids at the three-level<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are one-suiters that are evaluated in trick count, not HCP:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • 8 1\/2 – 9 tricks in a minor: rebid 3♣️ or 3♦️.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 8 -8 1\/2 tricks in a major: rebid 3♥️<\/strong> or 3♠️.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n
    \n
    \"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

    All is said.<\/p>\n\n\n

    This would be very difficult to bid after an opening of 1♣️.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    d) Rebids at 4♣️<\/strong> and 4♦️<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They show major two-suiters with a 6-5 and less than four losers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • 4♣️<\/strong>\u2192six Hearts and five Spades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 4♦️<\/strong>\u2192six Spades and five Hearts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n
      \n
      \"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

      e) Rebid of 3NT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This is a conventional bid that is often used incorrectly. It shows a solid seven-card suit in a minor and small honors scattered in the side suits.<\/p>\n\n\n

      Keep in mind that, excluding the 2♥️<\/strong>-rebid, all of the bids listed above are unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      <\/div>\n\n\n\n

      3. 2♣️<\/strong>-2♦️<\/strong>-2♥️<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      2♥️<\/strong> is always natural<\/strong> with at least five cards, but prepares for a later bid that confirms either a semi-forcing or a game forcing hand. To remove this ambiguity and have more details on the distribution of the opener, the responder makes a relay at 2♠️ (for other bids by responder, see end of article To know more about it<\/em>). Over 2♠️, all bids except 3♥️ are game forcing.<\/strong> 3♥️<\/strong> is the only bid that shows that the 2♣️<\/strong><\/strong>\u2022 opening was made with the semi-forcing hand and guarantees six Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The following sequence:<\/p>\n\n\n

      All answers that are shown in the following are natural and game forcing. Depending on the distribution, they are evaluated either according to HCP (24+), in tricks (nine or more) or in losers (less than four). Example:<\/p>\n\n\n

      Balanced distribution 5-3-3-2 or 6-3-2-2. Over 2NT, all bids are natural and show five-card suits. (For other options for responder, see end of article For more information<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n

      The advantage of the system is obvious. We can appreciate the space gained with 2♣️<\/strong><\/strong>-2♦️<\/strong><\/strong>-2♥️<\/strong>-2♠️<\/strong> compared to 2♦️<\/strong><\/strong>-2♥️<\/strong>-3♥️<\/strong>-3♠️<\/strong>-4♣️<\/strong><\/strong> or, worse, 2♦️<\/strong><\/strong>-2♥️<\/strong>-3♥️<\/strong>-4♦️<\/strong><\/strong> !<\/p>\n\n\n

      This shows a game-forcing one-suiter in Hearts and is forcing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Example: ♠️<\/strong>AK ♥️<\/strong>AKJ109542 ♦️<\/strong><\/strong>2 ♣️<\/strong><\/strong>A3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Over 3NT, all bids by responder are controls in a positive hand, 4♥️<\/strong> is a jump on the brakes and does not promise a fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Corollary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The semi-forcing rebid at 3♥️<\/strong> guarantees six cards. With hands that are in the zone of a semi-forcing (21-23 HCP) but only have five Hearts, you need to either open with 1♥️<\/strong> with a two-suited hand or open 2♣️<\/strong><\/strong> and rebid 2NT with a balanced hand. Example:<\/p>\n\n\n

      4. To know more about it<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The relay of 2♠️<\/strong> is not the only answer available to the responder. It is however the most economical and the safest bid to find out about opener’s hand. The following bids, on the contrary, are meant to describe responder’s hand. They are very precise and not always easy to remember. Therefore, they are reserved for those who want to work on this sequence with their regular partner(s).<\/p>\n\n\n

      • 2♠️<\/strong>\u2192 Relay or natural.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • 2SA\u2192 Transfer to Clubs, six cards, weak or strong. The rectification to 3♣️<\/strong><\/strong> is non-forcing (therefore, 2♣️<\/strong><\/strong> is semi-forcing).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • 3♣️<\/strong><\/strong>\u2192 Transfer to Diamonds, six cards, weak or strong. The rectification at 3♦️<\/strong><\/strong> is non-forcing (therefore, 2♣️<\/strong><\/strong> is semi-forcing)..<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • 3♦️<\/strong><\/strong>\u2192 Heart support in a hand considered positive opposite a game forcing hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • 3♥️<\/strong>\u2192 Heart support in a hand considered positive opposite a semi-forcing hand (thus stronger).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • 3♠️<\/strong>, 4♣️<\/strong><\/strong> and 4♦️<\/strong><\/strong>\u2192 Splinter, four Hearts, a useful card and the named shortness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
