How declarer wins his contract<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
East realizes right from the start of the play that his partner has zero points (all he has to do is count the points). Therefore, he does not see where the setting trick can come from, given that his Queen of trumps can be caught with a finesse. He thinks for a moment and an idea comes to his mind. Trying to put on his best poker face, he delicately places the eight of Hearts on the table. His objective is to make declarer believe that he doesn’t have the Queen of Trumps and thus make him give up on the finesse. This subterfuge does not have the desired effect, since South does not fall for it and lets the eight run to dummy’s Jack. South then takes all the remaining tricks and makes his contract. Was there something else that could have been done?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

East’s mistake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
He tried to make declarer go wrong by underleading his Queen of trumps.<\/strong> But this was not crowned with success because South chose the line of play most in line with the probabilities (finesse against the Queen of Hearts). East knew that he would not find an honor in his partner’s hand\u2026 However, a small contribution from him was still possible!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
What he should have done<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
From a purely technical point of view, East’s only reasonable hope was to find his partner with the Heart seven. In that case it would be enough to play the thirteenth Club<\/strong> and wait for partner to ruff with that card. If West could indeed ruff with the seven of trumps, this would force dummy to overruff with the Jack or ten.<\/strong> That being done, it would guarantee our Santa Clause a sure trump trick.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Epilogue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
This deal resembles the one of my previous article a lot. In both cases, one of the defenders must give away a ruff and discard, hoping for partner to have a specific trump card (not even an honor) that can promote a trump in his hand. It also evokes the use of a deceptive play<\/strong> in defense, which you can always resort to when you don’t find a purely technical solution to your problem or when the chances of success are really too low. In those cases, you can sometimes set a trap for the declarer. To be successful, the suggested wrong line of play must have a minimum of credibility. In addition, you must not arouse declarer’s suspicions by a change of tempo (hesitation, prolonged reflection time) or by any mannerism. Was it correct here to prefer the deceptive play to the technical one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The technical solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
With South holding four Hearts and West only two, you could think that the chance that South held the seven was twice as high, but this is wrong. East knows that South has the Ace and King of Hearts, along with two small cards. West also holds two small trump cards. East therefore has a 50% chance of finding the seven in his partner’s hand, which is no small feat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The deceptive play<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The finesse is the recommended way of handling the suit in this situation. The fact that East plays a trump himself should not make declarer change this plan, unless, maybe, if he is a weak, particularly gullible player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
