This month, these \u201cfacts\u201d concern the opening lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Against No-Trump<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leading the Queen in an unbid suit promises the Jack.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Against 3 No-Trump, if you have two five-card suits, lead from the better one if there is no indication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With AKJ3, lead the King.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With AQ109x, you always have to lead the 10.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With A42 in partner\u2019s suit, you must lead the 2.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Against suit contracts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To lead a trump, it is better to have three small than two small.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must avoid leading a doubleton like the plague.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With 987, you must lead the 9.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have raised partner\u2019s suit, you must lead the highest from four small.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don\u2019t underlead a King against a slam.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Against No-Trump<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong>FALSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible to lead the Queen with KQx or KQxx if the bidding suggests choosing that suit because the lead of the King (strong lead) would ask for an unblock, which that holding would not allow to survive. Also, you might choose to lead the Queen with AQ109x (see question 4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>TRUE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is logical to choose the suit that can be established faster, especially since when you have such a distribution it is likely that the success of the 3 No-Trump contract will be linked to the development of an adverse long suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>FALSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is true that the lead of a King promises three honors, but this is not all. It also strongly suggests partner should unblock any complementary honour. You can choose the 10, the Queen or even the Ace, depending on the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will choose the Queen when you think that the King is in dummy, in order to conserve the tenace Ace-10 behind declarer\u2019s possible Jack:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-true-or-false-special-leads-michel-bessis-2-1024x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59292\" width=\"512\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-true-or-false-special-leads-michel-bessis-2-1024x226.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-true-or-false-special-leads-michel-bessis-2-300x66.jpg 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-true-or-false-special-leads-michel-bessis-2-768x170.jpg 768w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-true-or-false-special-leads-michel-bessis-2-1536x340.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bridge-article-true-or-false-special-leads-michel-bessis-2-2048x453.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The lead of the 10 would allow declarer to take two tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ace is the correct card when you are the one who holds all the defensive strength of your side (without any entry to partner\u2019s hand), because it allows you to see if there is a doubleton Jack or King in one of the hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. <strong>TRUE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading the Ace could allow declarer to take two undeserved tricks if he holds KJx or KQx. In addition, if there is a blockage in the suit, it won\u2019t be easy for declarer to see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The lead of a doubleton has some very fierce detractors. However, although it should not be preferred when there is a valid alternative, this lead has a big advantage: it can be neutral, while it creates the threat of a ruff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid leading doubleton honours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Favour this lead when you have a trump entry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>FALSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>987 is not a sequence, but \u201cthree small\u201d that are next to each other. Therefore, if you play odd-even leads, you have to lead the 7. On the lead of the eight, he could not know if partner does not have &#x2663;&#xfe0f;Q98.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. <strong>FALSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even very false! All depends on the bidding sequence.
