It seems we must act; but how?

We listen to Lévy: “Double. Take-out. This situation has never come up; I must be lacking in experience. But in my system, when a double has not been agreed to be penalties, it should be treated as take-out. This is written in large on Page 1. I recommend to all our readers to adopt this principle urgently.” This choice to double was cited the most; Quantin summarises all of that, additionally specifying, wisely, as it happens, on this deal: “A hand with no natural bid. If North bids 3♥, I shall pass, in order to not penalise Partner for having overcalled with, for example, ♠632 ♥AQ10864 ♦75 ♣A4. This call might allow us to find our real trump suit: Clubs.”

Well spotted, Jean-Christophe; it was the case here that North held: ♠83 ♥A10876 ♦K ♣AJ1092. Every contract is going down, except 5 Clubs!

Other, less “dangerous”, options than Double were selected, starting with the 3♠ chosen by Rocafort, Desmoulins and Pacault: “Although North usually holds at least six cards in Hearts, it is not certain that 4 Hearts is the right game. You might imagine going down on account of diamond ruffs with nine (or more) top tricks in NT. The weak 2 in Spades having been revealed, 3♠ is clearly a cue bid showing a spade stop. When the opponents have shown two suits, cue bids serve to show stops in these two suits and therefore 3♠ is asking for a diamond stop.” Second good principle to keep in mind. Clearly an instructive problem! The problem is that North, who will quite rarely have a diamond stop, will find himself in trouble over this 3♠ bid.

This is why one final group of experts consider King-doubleton in Hearts to be a sufficient fit and set Hearts as Trumps at the 3-level, such as Jill Meyers: “Debatable between 3♥ and 4♥. But I do not want to punish my partner for overcalling with ♠73 ♥AQJ742 ♦K73 ♣42″ or at the 4-level, such as Hackett: “A bit too strong for 3♥.”

To finish, Lorenzini‘s contribution, which echoes Lévy’s: “3♥. The whole problem resides in the meaning of a double. In Version 1, we consider double to be penalties, which is unthinkable with this hand. In Version 2, we consider double to be “Snapdragon”, which applies in sequences where the first three suits have been bid (2♦ shows Spades) and then shows at least five clubs and two-card support for Hearts (with an honour). This double generally applies after a 1-level opening but extending its use to after a 2-level opening is not traditional. Being not 100% sure of the context I find myself in here, I prefer to avoid the accident and lean towards raising to 3♥, telling myself that my HCP strength compensates for the poor quality of my fit.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-edfaea3" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-edfaea-3-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-edfaea-3-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember: If in doubt, a double is for take-out. But in a pairs tournament nowadays, what can we not allow ourselves? and Hackett: “Pass. 4♣ or 4♦ might be winning bids but they are, above all, very risky bets.“

Scores Deal 4

Pass: 100 (18 votes)
Double: 5 (1 vote)
3NT: 5 (1 vote)

Deal 5: The right track

Obviously and as expected, the great majority of experts responded 4♣. Among the arguments put forward by, among others, Rombaut, Chemla and Saporta, we find the fact that we have some hope of slam and ought not to be in danger in 4NT. I admit that I would have been interested to know what the jury imagined the follow-up to be based on North’s possible responses but Quantin felt like teasing: “4♣. Major two-suiter of at least 5-4. Yes, I know, our trump suit might be Diamonds. Let us look at the rest of the sequence. Next month?”

However, there were many who had a precise idea about the meaning of North’s responses. Let us cite Kokish: “Here are the responses over 4♣; relays requesting a description (3NT being able to encompass several types of hand).

4♦ – a long suit (generally Diamonds).

4♥ and 4♠ – a five-card suit in a good hand.

4NT – Nothing to say, minimum.

5♣ – a very strong balanced hand without a five-card suit, perhaps excluding Diamonds.

Several other sets of continuations are possible. Over 3NT, 4♦ and 4♥ are transfers, 4♠ shows diamond length, 4NT 14-15 HCP without a five-card suit.”

Cronier proposes something a bit more succinct: “4♣. Over 3NT, it is practical to consider 4♣ to be showing interest in the majors (at least 5-4), whereas the other bids at the 4-level are transfers. Over 4♣, partner will be able to bid 4NT when the majors don’t suit him, bid 4♥ or 4♠ with four cards and finally, choose 4♦ (a bit like opposite Landy) with possible three-card support.”

If you do not have so much time to work on this rather rare sequence (in the majority of cases, we pass opposite this 3NT), adopt Cronier’s suggestion, which is quite easy to remember.

Still, I cannot silently overlook the experts who did not bid 4♣ and that for the very good reason that, in their system, 4♣ does not show this type of hand. So, Adad: “Pass. I would have happily bid 4♣ if that showed a three-suited slam try but, for me, it’s a transfer to Diamonds!” or Desmoulins: “4♠. Encouraging three-suiter (we play 4♣ as a transfer to Diamonds or a major two-suiter if it is followed by 4♥, 4♦ and 4♥ as transfers and therefore 4♠ as three-suited).”

Originally the finishing touch for Lévy: “Pass. Otherwise, my system is as follows:

4♣ – 5-5 major two-suiter

4♦ – transfer to Hearts

4♥ – transfer to Spades

4♠ – relay to 4NT. If it is followed by 5♣, it describes a strong three-suiter (with 5NT from Partner negative). If it is followed by 5♦, it is natural and slammy. The suggested hand is not strong enough for responding with 4♠, the only second choice.”

Wrong choice, Alain, on the deal given, as North had ♠QJ6 ♥AK3 ♦Q1064 ♣A105. Whereas the pre-emptor held King-Jack-seventh in Clubs and the Ace of Diamonds! You do better to play in 6 Diamonds than 3NT…

Conclusion: make your choice from amongst these different suggestions. But if you have not discussed anything with your partner, my usual advice is to go for the simplest, to avoid a grave accident.

Scores Deal 5

4♣: 100 (15 votes)
Pass: 20 (3 votes)
4♥: 5 (1 vote)
4♠: 5 (1 vote)

Deal 6: Destructive or constructive?

Difficult, with this hand, to guess whether the final contract belongs to us or whether we ought to defend a major-suit game by the opponents. If Partner has 4-4-3-2 distribution in the 12-14 HCP range (or worse, 18-19 HCP), we should surely not be running away. East-West will not be making any major-suit game and a 5-Diamond contract is surely a very bad bet.

This was not the opinion of all the experts who chose a 4♦ bid, such as Thuillez, Kerlero and Adad, who explained that they were putting the opponents’ backs to the wall, all while leaving the final decision to Partner if West bid 4♥ or 4♠.

Said in a different way by Kokish: “4♦. There is no appropriate bid with this type of hand and it might be beneficial to pass and see what East-West say. Sometimes, North is 4-4-3-2 and, in that case, we have gone wrong. But the opponents might do something silly and then we’ll collect a substantial penalty.” However, a significant number of experts were indisposed to give up on a 3NT contract (the main disadvantage of bidding 4♦) and, for that reason, chose to show an encouraging hand with Diamonds, either with a Truscott 2NT like Saporta: “No ill-considered pre-empt. My partner will have no qualms about bidding 3NT with ♠KJ5 ♥AK4 ♦K852 ♣️1042″, supported by Rombaut: “In my system, this shows an invitation to game with Diamonds”, or by supporting to 3♦ straightaway, such as Lévy: “Positive support with an unbalanced hand. 2NT is also a positive diamond raise but with a hand that is happy to play in 3NT that way round.”

Be careful; this suggestion by Lévy is far from being traditional, the 3♦ bid in this sequence generally being considered a pre-empt.

To finish, two original suggestions but which each have their own merit:

Lorenzini: “3♣️. Fit-showing bid, with a good fit in Diamonds and some club length (normally five cards) in an 8-11 HCP hand. Here, only having three major-suit cards makes me want to show my length in the minors, in order to facilitate my partner’s high-level competitive judgement.”

Rocafort: “2♦.
