The club is at the center of all these moments in the life of a bridge player. If the clubs are so active, so numerous and so dynamic, it is often because an army of volunteers is committed to making the game shine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong> We met some of these volunteers<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>They are young or older, active or retired, advanced or moderate players. They are all committed to making bridge thrive. <strong>Volunteering, for the love of the game<\/strong>. Andr\u00e9 Simon, Thomas Bertheau, Charles Antoine and Huguette Matta are among them. Franck Busselier, a former volunteer, has found a new career in bridge. Andr\u00e9 Simon, 70 is<strong> the president of the Ajec bridge club<\/strong> in Chaville. This former engineer discovered the game at the end of the 1970s within his company. In 2009, at the time of his early retirement, he joined his current club. \u201cI am very familiar with scoring software, Bridgemate and duplicating machines. So, at the start, I mainly helped with IT issues and software maintenance. Then I was asked if I wanted to be a director and so I took courses to become a director. He enrolled in the bridge school of the club near his home and has gotten more and more into it ever since. \u201cI quickly agreed to take responsibility. First I joined the club&#8217;s office and then, in 2015, I took charge of the school.\u201d Each week, in addition to his work in insurance, <strong>he devotes about ten hours of his free time to these activities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teacher_volunteer-1024x355.jpg\" alt=\"teachers\" class=\"wp-image-62112\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Longeville-l\u00e8s-Metz, at the Rollon Gadelle club<\/strong>, Charles Antoine, 82 has been giving part of his time for nearly twenty years. At the time, he accompanied a friend who wanted to take lessons. <strong>He takes an interest in the game. Then the club.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cOne day, some students asked me if I could take care of them. So I passed the teacher&#8217;s exam and taught them\u201d<\/strong>, he explains. Today, he no longer teaches but he is part of the club committee and directs tournaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huguette Matta, 77 has been playing bridge since the late 1960s. He never left. <strong>\u201cI got involved as a volunteer.<\/strong> Then, when we saw there was a real need, I was asked to give lessons and that meant <strong>a professional reorientation for me<\/strong>\u201d, he confides. Now he is employed as<strong> president of the club<\/strong>, but still teaches and also organizes<strong> the International Summer Bridge Festival of Biarritz<\/strong>. He defends the co-existence of professionals and volunteers<strong> to bring bridge to another dimension.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-592bf56\" data-block-id=\"592bf56\"><style>.stk-592bf56{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Friendliness above everything<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteers talk over and over about this concept, you find it on home-pages of clubs, on the list of reasons given by the federation to encourage the practice of bridge&#8230; <strong>\u201cWe are interested in the game as such but it &#8216;s important that we want to go to the club, that there is a nice atmosphere\u201d <\/strong>confirms Franck Busselier. The notion of directing is not the same as for other tournaments, nor is the rigor. We are always keen to introduce people to the game gradually\u201d,<\/strong> says Charles Antoine<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With the same idea in mind,<strong> the Chaville club organizes a mishmash tournament <\/strong>once a year where experienced players pair up with beginners. A way to not put anyone off, and ensure a long-term commitment from the members. <strong>Traditional feasts<\/strong> (like coming together to drink the first red wine of the year for \u201cBeaujolais Nouveau\u201d, or eating a special cake (\u201cLa Galette des Rois\u201d) for epiphany, charitable actions and parties of all kinds are the perfect occasions to bring together their members around a bridge table and a meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-e001045\" data-block-id=\"e001045\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-e001045-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-block-column--v2 stk-column stk-block stk-2419269\" data-block-id=\"2419269\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-2419269{flex:1 1 66.7% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-2419269-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-2419269-inner-blocks\">\n<p>\u201c<strong>We remain open all summer.<\/strong> Every Thursday we organize a barbecue before the evening tournament. The club became well known for this, there are players from Paris who travel here because of it\u201d, continues Andr\u00e9 Simon.<strong> In his club in Chaville<\/strong>, they do many little things to generate a good mood. \u201cAt each tournament<strong> we offer hot drinks and sweets.<\/strong> \u201cAnd on Wednesday morning,<strong> breakfast before the tournament is offered to our players.<\/strong>\u201d Behind the bar, in Biarritz, Huguette Matta has a place in the first row to see how important these moments of getting together are. <strong>\u201cAfter the tournaments, it &#8216;s the third half. To cope, volunteers work actively to keep the link alive at all times. At the Rollon Gadelle club, they work hard <strong>to publish a journal sent to all members every two weeks<\/strong>. In this 52 \u00e0 la Une (\u201c52 on the front page\u201d) you can find <strong>news about club life, humor, drawings and some deals<\/strong>. \u201cThis allows us to connect\u201d, confirms Charles Antoine. <strong>\u201cPeople join the project and stay.\u201d<\/strong> Thomas Bertheau for his part has opted for a group on the WhatsApp messaging application. Already seventy members, a hard core of the club, exchange messages there. In 2020, with the lock downs and the impossibility of getting together, these bonds were severely tested. But the solidarity only became stronger. \u201cEven our oldest member who is 90 years old has bought a tablet and some players have taken the time to teach her how to use tools like Skype and BBO. These are moments that require<strong> a huge investment and a lot of energy, but we have had good results<\/strong>\u201d, rejoices Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pass on the knowledge<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-b41300c\" data-block-id=\"b41300c\"><style>.stk-b41300c{height:15px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/books_volunteer-1024x355.jpg\" alt=\"books\" class=\"wp-image-62113\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>People learn bridge in the clubs. Here again, volunteers play<strong> an essential role in accompanying young players and adult apprentices<\/strong>. Andr\u00e9 Simon, Charles Antoine and Franck Busselier all teach bridge.<strong> All of them emphasize how important it is to pass on their knowledge of the game<\/strong>. \u201cI find it extraordinary to see those who were absolute beginners playing very well after some years\u201d, Franck Busselier tells me enthusiastically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas Bertheau has chosen not to teach too much to ensure the optimal functioning of his club&#8217;s school. \u201cMy credo is that a club is only strong if it has a bridge school\u201d, states the young man. \u201cI prefer to devote myself to organizing and bringing people together and to know all the students at all levels.\u201d He is also responsible of the recruitment of new students.<strong> \u201cIt &#8216;s interesting to have new players and with them new ideas\u201d<\/strong>, confirms the man in charge. Each year, the Coulommiers school<strong> welcomes 12 to 15 new students <\/strong>thanks to his actions. \u201cEvery year we challenge ourselves to put energy in the right place. We stop doing things that have not resulted in the recruitment of new students and we try something else to gain ground\u201d explains the young man. A more sophisticated strategy is needed to recruit new members to join the club. \u201cYou have to show people all the possibilities of this extraordinary game.<strong> We must create a desire<\/strong>\u201d, explains Franck Busselier. Astarting point is often to participate in meetings of the associations of the town of the club, but also in neighboring towns and to promote the clubs in public places. <strong>But some go further.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the case of Thomas Bertheau who takes this subject very seriously. \u201cWe communicate via <strong>social networks<\/strong>, in particular on the Facebook pages of neighboring towns at the start of the school year; we send messages to <strong>the local radio station,<\/strong> which many people listen to, and I try to place <strong>an advertisement in the local newspaper <\/strong>as well\u201d, he explains. In August 2019, to go even further, he organized a day in partnership with a local golf club: \u201c<strong>In the morning, it was a golf tournament and golf lessons for beginners and in the afternoon a bridge tournament and bridge lessons.\u201d <\/strong>A success that he repeated in 2020. Nothing stops his desire to energize the club. You need a clear structure to ensure that everybody is efficient in what they do. <strong>\u201cWe are a team of 10-12 volunteers<\/strong>. This is necessary for a club like ours (around 600 members &#8211; editor&#8217;s note) and everyone has a role within the committee. Otherwise, too many tasks rely on too few people and they will get bored\u201d, continues the volunteer.<strong> Financial management also requires special attention.<\/strong> Andr\u00e9 Simon saw the tournaments on Thursday evening, with a real dinner, become financial pitfalls following a drop in attendance. The club had to adapt with a less expensive buffet and less frequent tournaments.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-516f5a8\" data-block-id=\"516f5a8\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">For all, the biggest difficulty comes from the conflicts that can arise within the club.<strong> \u201cThis year, we had to organize a disciplinary council, that &#8216;s never pleasant. Nor easy to manage\u201d<\/strong>, laments Thomas Bertheau. And yet, even beyond the links and friendships they were able to forge, they do feel compensated -differently. <strong>There are personal victories<\/strong>. \u201cIthrive when I can give and I am satisfied when things come true, when attendance increases and people enjoy themselves\u201d, explains Thomas Bertheau. <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-19686c1\" data-block-id=\"19686c1\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">And things you learn about yourself. \u201c<strong>I learned to talk to people.<\/strong> I was an engineer and had never taught. And I discovered my pedagogical side\u201d says Andr\u00e9 Simon. \u201cNow my next step is to explore my role as president and learn even more.\u201d 2021 should give him the opportunity to fully explore this role. For him, just like all the others, <strong>it will be a decisive year to breathe new life into the clubs.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex
