The two Americans have won the biggest titles. Yet the two individuals in this pair nicknamed<strong> \u201cMeckwell\u201d,<\/strong> often presented as one of the best in the world, have nothing in common. <strong>Meckstroth <\/strong>was a police officer before turning pro, <strong>Rodwell<\/strong> is an intellectual. One plays the piano, the other has a passion for golf. \u201cThey didn&#8217;t even dine together during tournaments!\u201d recalls <strong>three-time world champion Alain L\u00e9vy,<\/strong> who often played against them. Therefore, f<strong>riendship cannot explain their longevity and their success<\/strong>. Four world titles and yet very few affinities. <strong>\u201cApart from bridge, they shared a passion for crosswords &#8211; that&#8217;s not much\u201d<\/strong>, jokes<strong> Jos\u00e9 Damiani<\/strong>, President Emeritus of the World Federation. At the bridge table, <strong>Michel Perron<\/strong> shone with his ability to avoid making mistakes, <strong>Paul Chemla<\/strong> with \u201chis sense of the music of the bidding.\u201d Two different but complementary personalities who, through hard work, have managed to speak \u201cthe same language\u201d, and share the same vision of the game. For more than twenty years,<strong> Herv\u00e9 Mouiel and Alain L\u00e9vy <\/strong>formed an amazing duo. \u201cHe was my friend, my brother,\u201d the latter recounts with nostalgia. These two who were later inseparable met <strong>in the 1970s in the Parisian bridge clubs <\/strong>on the left bank of the city. The solid pair did not lose until Herv\u00e9&#8217;s death. \u201cThere is not a day that goes by that I don&#8217;t think of him,\u201d admits his partner with emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-524806d\" data-block-id=\"524806d\"><style>.stk-524806d{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An idyllic relationship? Not always!<\/strong> Alain and Herv\u00e9 didn&#8217;t have the same style. The first is <strong>very meticulous<\/strong>, the second more creative. And it was difficult for these two strong characters to hide their emotions. In Rhodes, <strong>at the 1996 World Championships, Alain got angry: <\/strong>\u201cWe won all the matches, but <strong>Herv\u00e9<\/strong> made a bid that he should not make\u2026 so I spoke to him really badly. His wife packed their bags on the spot.\u201d It was necessary for their captain to step in to ease the tensions and they ultimately went to win the competition. \u201cIn the end, we threw ourselves into each other&#8217;s arms. It was wonderful\u201d, remembers<strong> Alain L\u00e9vy<\/strong>, who analyzes the infallible desire to win which brought them to the top of the podiums: <strong>\u201cHerv\u00e9 had an iron will, the strength that he wanted to win at all costs. He instilled that strength in me and that&#8217;s what united us.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-01d565a\" data-block-id=\"01d565a\"><style>.stk-01d565a{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marriage of convenience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes friendship can be weakened by what is at stake. Thirty-something <strong>C\u00e9dric Lorenzini<\/strong> knows what he&#8217;s talking about: \u201cIn the past I had problems with partners <strong>because I got angry easily.<\/strong> Bridge can shatter friendships.\u201d So <strong>C\u00e9dric worked on himself, particularly with a coach.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding When<strong> Thomas Bessis<\/strong> went looking for him in 2013 to play in<strong> the United States and China<\/strong>, their<br>understanding was not natural. Both say they are very dominant. \u201cEach one had to find his territory. The first two years, there were sparks flowing\u201d, admits <strong>C\u00e9dric Lorenzini<\/strong>. But they found their marks thanks to dialog. \u201cYou have to talk about situations that can create tensions before they occur in order to be able to defuse them quickly when they are happening,\u201d adds the player from Alsace.
