West, a South American international, led the Heart 7 in tempo. Declarer paused for a long time. This lead of a small Heart is curious. Underleading the Ace of Hearts in this situation is nothing new, but underleading Ace-King, it’s Machiavellian. Especially since the winning options are multiple: The Jack of Spades coming down in three rounds, or Clubs either 2-2 or with the Queen singleton or a finesse against the Queen if the distribution of the deal indicates a finesse. Almost regretfully, South ruffed and congratulated his imaginative opponent a few minutes later. The lead of the Ace of Hearts allows declarer to later catch the King in a ruffing finesse in order to discard dummy’s Club: after testing the other suits by cashing Ace-King-Queen of Diamonds, Ace-King-Queen of Spades and Ace-King of Clubs, he’ll play the Heart Queen as a last resort.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-fea307f" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-fea-307-f-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-fea-307-f-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

My advice: Adopt

Exclusion Blackwood is a real plus in your arsenal of slam bidding. With a jump in the suit of your void above the game level it allows you to ask for key-cards when you have a void: partner will only count his keycards outside of the suit in question. Adopt it and work on it with your favorite partner!

3- Like in the book

Your points

♠3: 100

♥3: 60

♦10 (or 7): 20

It is amusing to see that this problem of choosing between two four-card suits after a simple 1NT-3NT is found regularly in the matches that we currently play and at an accelerated frequency. As I tirelessly repeat to you, principles for your opening leads have the double advantage of not tiring you out and, if they are the result of serious analysis, of producing good statistical results. I was on lead against this 3NT, I led the Spade 3 without much thought, respecting what I have recommended on numerous occasions: between two four-card suits, give priority to the one that is headed by the smaller honor. The percentage of deals that I have played recently where the pertinence of this principle was confirmed is very high.

The full deal

Post-Mortem:

I’ve read a very good book on this subject and so I led the 3 of Spades – and then sent a signed copy to my opponent and friend, who chose to lead the 2 of Hearts. The Heart lead gives the eighth trick and then South can easily establish the ninth in Spades. After a Spade lead to the King and a Spade to the Queen, declarer can still win double dummy thanks to an endplay squeeze against West. Fair enough.
