He is responsible for <strong>the rhythm of play<\/strong>, <strong>the regularity of the deals<\/strong> and the overall smooth running of tournaments and competitions. He is also at the origin of their organization (apart from national competitions): he defines the conditions of participation, schedules, format and deals. And publishes the results after play is over. Fifteen years ago, when <strong>the Limousin<\/strong> committee was created, he trained to become a director. \u201cI never imagined going any further,\u201d he recalls. But meeting director <strong>Philippe Lormant<\/strong> pushed him to persevere. \u201cHe really made me love directing and being a director. The last revision took place in<strong> 2017<\/strong>. It is a commission for the whole world, made up of players who are experts in directing and high-level directors, which is responsible for modernizing and adapting the laws and their implementation.<strong> And over 93 years<\/strong> <strong>they have changed a lot.<\/strong> \u201cIn the years 1930 to 1960, we had laws that did not hesitate to sanction the side that had made a mistake, even if it was unintentionally. The laws are now aiming more and more to come back to what would have happened if there had been no irregularity,\u201d explains <strong>Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Chevalier.<\/strong> The new version, in English, is then translated in many countries. Where the function takes on its full meaning is when he has to make a judgement call. <strong>Henri Defranchi<\/strong> speaks of a<strong> \u201ccrime scene\u201d<\/strong>. \u201cYou arrive at the table. You must not have any preconceived ideas about what happened. The first thing to do then is <strong>to question the witnesses,<\/strong>\u201d he explains. Carrying out the investigation is not a one-person job. \u201cI will always make a decision after discussion with fellow directors and players. In the national division, they are much stronger than me,\u201d explains <strong>Thierry Beineix.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This way of investigating what other players would have done is a recent development in arbitration. <strong>\u201cWe try as much as possible to consult among directors to make as few errors as possible and so that people have less need to appeal the decision<\/strong>\u201d, describes <strong>Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Chevalier<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Because a director is <strong>not infallible<\/strong>. \u201cWhen it involves judgment calls concerning for example hesitation, etc., which can lead to a different course of a deal, we decide according to our convictions after having taken opinions, but the players may not agree. We accept it very well, we must not have an ego who has been in the world of directing for\u201d explains <strong>Blandine de Heredia<\/strong>, fifty years. No ego and a lot of finesse to explain your decisions. But that&#8217;s not enough if it does not come with a certain firmness. <strong>Philippe Cronier<\/strong> relates this anecdote of when <strong>director Fran\u00e7ois Willard<\/strong> was called at a table during<strong> the Juan les-Pins festival:<\/strong> Unable to collect the testimonies of the screaming players, he played indifferent, turned around and started to walk away. When the players realized, they stopped screaming to understand why and his response was:<strong> \u201cIt&#8217;s okay, I put a zero for both pairs. Then, it&#8217;s not easy,\u201d says <strong>Blandine de Heredia.<\/strong> \u201cThe lower the category, the less experienced the players, the more you have to flatter them.\u201d adds<strong> Henri Defranchi<\/strong>. These situations are not very common. But you have to know how to face them. For the past ten years or so, the training workshops for directors includes a module entitled<strong> \u201cPreventing and managing conflicts\u201d <\/strong>which tries to explain what brings people to conflict and to provide solutions to defuse them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-8a884ca\" data-block-id=\"8a884ca\"><style>.stk-8a884ca{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Being seen as biased, the worst that can happen to a director<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Balance-1024x326.jpg\" alt=\"Balance\" class=\"wp-image-64372\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a player tells me that he considers that I am incompetent, it is his right. <strong>But if he thinks I&#8217;m biased, we&#8217;ve got a problem. <\/strong>The one thing we cannot let happen is to be biased,\u201d argues <strong>Henri Defranchi<\/strong>. And he has already been confronted with it. Called at a table as the director during an international competition, he remembers the player&#8217;s reaction:<strong> \u201cI&#8217;m not surprised, you favor the Parisian intelligentsia,\u201d <\/strong>he told me. I answered him: \u201cSir, you must understand nothing about football because to say of somebody from Marseille that he favors a Parisian shows that you don&#8217;t understand anything in the matter.\u201d So, when he takes part in training sessions for directors, he gives them tips to avoid this kind of reaction. Like for example using formal language, even if they are your friends. \u201cIf you use familiar language with one player but not another, there is immediately a gap,\u201d he explains.<strong> So he keeps formal with everyone, at least during the time of play.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A player like the others?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-6cc130d\" data-block-id=\"6cc130d\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-6cc130d-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-block-column--v3 stk-column stk-block-column--v2 stk-block stk-d7ec55c\" data-block-id=\"d7ec55c\"><style>.stk-d7ec55c-inner-blocks{justify-content:center !important}.stk-d7ec55c-container{display:flex !important;flex-direction:column !important}@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-d7ec55c{flex:1 1 66.7% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-d7ec55c-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-d7ec55c-inner-blocks\">\n<p>Is playing a necessity for directing?<strong> Yes, both directors and players agree.<\/strong> \u201cAt club level, you can be a good director without being a great player. But you have to play to be able to direct,\u201d explains <strong>Thierry Beineix<\/strong>. Each category of directing corresponds to a playing level. For example, only those who are ranked in one of the two highest levels of players in <strong>the French Ranking (First series national or spades) <\/strong>can become a national director in France. \u201cSome players are stars in their categories, so they have to feel that the director is good enough\u201d, specifies <strong>Henri Defranchi.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the game itself that must be mastered, there is the atmosphere, <strong>the emotions that must be understood<\/strong>. Before directing, <strong>Marieke Quant<\/strong> wanted to reach a certain level of play but also to understand all the intricacies of what happens for a player at the table. <strong>\u201cThere are all kinds of emotions and a special atmosphere,\u201d <\/strong>describes the young woman. Understand the game, the law and the players. Recognized by his peers and the best players on the tour as a great director and <strong>a person with warm personality<\/strong>, he looks back on the key moments of his career.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What made you decide to become a director?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I didn&#8217;t have to get up early in the morning!<\/strong> I was fascinated by the rules and when I started out I quickly discovered I had great <strong>arithmetic<\/strong> skills to keep score. Today, they are no longer of any use to me, so I am retiring at the right time. The world of bridge is full of interesting and endearing personalities and I was quickly taken in. <strong>It&#8217;s an exciting life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What were the main stages in your career?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My first tournament as a director was here in <strong>Victoria <\/strong>(British Columbia) and lasted a whole week,<strong> in 1983 or 1984.<\/strong> I had so much fun staying up late to chat with the other directors after the sessions<strong>! I finished the week exhausted but very happy.<\/strong> I told myself that I would like to do this job but that I would never endure all the trips. Yet I did. In 1993, I participated in my first North American Championships in Seattle. I was both terrified and elated.<strong> In 1994<\/strong>, I became a full time director for <strong>the ACBL (American Contract Bridge League)<\/strong> and that allowed me to work for all the championships in North America. My colleague, Bill Schoder, nicknamed <strong>\u201cKojak\u201d<\/strong>, was the head director of the World Championships. It is thanks to him that I participated in my first World Championships in 2000 in Maastricht. I was just as terrified and elated as I was for Seattle. <strong>Max Bavin<\/strong>, who had taken the place of <strong>\u201cKojak\u201d<\/strong>, retired after the 2016. Championships. I replaced him. In 2017, I was therefore Head Tournament Director at the World Championships in Lyon. And again, I was terrified and elated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you think makes a good director?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The ability to listen and keep an open mind. And empathy. <\/strong>Don&#8217;t let your ego get in the way of your decision making. I have worked with a lot of very smart people who I consider technically better than me.
