With this inverted minor, we are protected by our initial pass and can use the 2♦ bid to show 10-11 HCP and five-card diamond support. 3♣ (invitational diamond raise) would show a more unbalanced hand.” They are backed up by the “elders”, who are not lacking a sense of humour and have long been followers of this system, such as Rocafort: “2♦. I’m used to it: there is always a deal publicising inverted minors. We’ve done that now and can move on to the following deals, which might be a bit more complex” and Chidiac: “2♦. Inverted minor-suit raise showing, as a passed hand, a hand with a diamond fit and 10-11 HCP. I wonder what you do if you don’t play inverted minors!” The hand seemed too weak for many experts to get carried away. Only two opted for a 3♦ bid and three chose 2NT, including Pacault, who justified his choice as follows: “2NT. My opening style of “playable diamonds” implies that Opener has solid diamonds (if the hand is balanced) and strengthens the South hand. I choose 2NT over 3♦, partly due to consideration of stoppers and partly because 3♦, without being a pre-empt, is more generally bid by a hand of 8-9 HCP with more distribution.” The majority, however, opted for a more sensible 1NT bid.

Three arguments appear time and time again in the comments: the diamonds are poor. Jill Meyers: “1NT. For the most part, it was a positive bid with good trumps, which explains why the majority did not resign themselves to settling for 4♠. But the tactics chosen differed for everyone who went past game. Let us begin with the “technicians” who opted for 5♠, a bid meaning: “Partner, do you have a heart control? If so, bid slam.”

Lorenzini: “5♠. My partner’s 3♠ response confirms decent trump quality (3NT, otherwise, would have shown poor trumps). Reassured about that, it is clear that a 4♠ bid would be insufficient since I hold three key cards and a source of tricks in Clubs. I would therefore have said 5♠, a bid that asks my partner to bid slam with a control in Hearts.”

In the same category of ideas, the bid that received the best score was 5♣. It also shows the lack of a heart control but insists on the second suit, which might lead to a grand slam being bid; who knows?

Combescure: “5♣. I do not think I am strong enough to force to slam (5♠) with North having a heart control (especially with such mediocre trumps) but I am too strong to settle for 4♠. 5♣ should deny a heart control and express the desire for slam without insisting on it, with seemingly good clubs (we did not bid 5♦).”

Finally, the third option: a 5♦ bid, once again to ask for a missing heart control. Chemla: “5♦. 3♠ then 4♦ were a double encouragement. Though with the two red-suit controls, you might be amazed that North did not bid Blackwood. He might only have one ace.” Adad: “5♦. That might not be the ideal bid for finding 7 Spades but it ensures that you will avoid playing in 6 Spades with the Ace-King of Hearts to lose (I admit that 3♠ confirmed slam interest and showed the good-quality trumps that 3NT would have denied).”

Finally, the last choice, selected by Bessis, who was also convinced that he would find his partner with a good hand: “4NT. As though a missing control could prevent me from bidding Blackwood… When I hold the King of Trumps, Ace-King of Clubs and the Ace of Diamonds and my partner shows a sign of encouragement, it is almost impossible for him not to have a heart control… At this stage, I prefer to check that we have enough key cards and, in particular, the Queen of Trumps, rather than a heart control.” More practical than technical but it is always delicate to choose between a cookie-cutter bid that could lead to a ridiculous result and a technical bid that describes your hand to the opponents too much…

Five experts out of twenty-one, however, displayed a surprising amount of pessimism, including the usually rather optimistic Thuillez: “4♠. We could be missing the Ace-King of Hearts and Queen-Jack of Spades and we would be in danger at the 5-level.” It is true that, with at least 30 combined HCP, it would still be unlucky if the 10 missing HCP were precisely those ones! All the same, Kokish points out that we would still be in danger at the 5-level opposite: ♠AJ63 ♥QJ6 ♦KQJ4 ♣Q3.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-ff770c4" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-ff-770-c-4-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-ff-770-c-4-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember: The technical bid of 3♥ in this sequence certainly looks good; but if you do not discuss the meaning of the continuations, it will be of little use to you.

Scores Deal 2

5♣: 100 (8 votes)
5♠: 80 (3 votes)
4♠: 60 (5 votes)
5♦: 50 (4 votes)
4NT: 10 (1 vote)

Deal 3: The great leap

(*) Weak, six cards.

Pairs tournament
Should we balance in order to play at the 4-level when we did not overcall to play at the 3-level? Let us begin with the solo bids, such as the one chosen by Bessis: “3NT. Support, with the fourth suit, Diamonds. A convention which is, in my opinion, absolutely necessary to play after a minor-suit opening and a two-suited overcall. It is even more interesting to play after a two-suited 2NT, to show Spades and a fit in the minor opened by Partner. You would start by doubling with a hand that wanted to play in 3NT.” I have to say, I did not know this and I find it very attractive, which explains why I have raised its score. The other unique bids did not even slightly appeal to me; I am therefore leaving their score at 20 out of 100.

I had this hand at the table and I admit that for quite a while, I found myself not knowing what to say, torn between several contradictory feelings: raising the Clubs, mentioning my diamonds, a source of tricks and the suit we would like to see our partner lead, the fear of Partner being 4-4 in the majors, in which case it would be best to let the opponents play… In the end, I opted for the same bid as two experts, including Rocafort: “3♦. A question of long-term strategy. You should expect for things to escalate and resign yourself to letting the opponents play at the 5- or 6-level. So, before supporting the Clubs, it might be essential to show where you’re at.” This bid has the advantage of giving partner the right lead and not putting all your eggs in one basket if Partner has the majors. However, it does not solve the problem of knowing what to do if the auction goes up to 4♥ or 4♠.

This is why, to avoid this, some chose a fit-jump to 4♦, such as Lévy and Duguet: “4♦. South bids his cards and North will be better able to judge what to do against 4♠ or 4♥, in offence or defence.” In the same vein, you might choose not to bypass 3NT but by obscuring the diamonds, such as Quantin: “3♠. Splinter. Probably the best bet, whilst still leaving a 3NT contract a possibility in case my partner has a good hand.” Those for whom the double showed that suit made use of the opportunity, such as Toffier ou Saporta: “Double. For the first action and bidding Clubs at the appropriate level later.”

Yeah, yeah; all this is hardly convincing, as what would you do over a two-suited 2NT? I am therefore downgrading the score for this double, which to me seems too “convenient”… To finish, the only bid that collected 100 points. The 2♥ cue bid explained by Kokish: “2♥. A method played a fair amount across the Atlantic. 2♥ = at least invitational in the suit opened; 2♠ = forcing with the other minor; 2NT = natural; 3m = weak raise; 3om = natural, non-forcing; 3M = Splinter; 3NT = natural; double = values, balanced; pass then double: penalties. The disadvantages of this 2♥ bid are indicating the wrong lead and not showing the spade singleton.”

Of course, this bid does not solve everything but it does have the advantage of presenting a comprehensive and easy-to-remember defence to the opponents’ two-suited bids. As for the little story, there was ♠A8 ♥Q92 ♦Q63 ♣AQ1042 opposite. 5 Clubs was cold, with the trump finesse working.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-76645d5" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-76645-d-5-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-76645-d-5-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember: The continuations after an opponent’s two-suited bid are surely the biggest source of mishaps and penalties. Let us begin, once again, with the isolated opinions. First of all, the honest Kerlero: “2♦. I admit that I have not talked about this situation with my partners. It would certainly be interesting to agree that 3♦ has become more distributional than strong but, as nothing has been documented, I do not want to create the risk of an accident.” The audacious Toffier, after that: “4♦. Very descriptive bid for this magnificent two-suiter. We make a game with practically nothing opposite…” and the modern Lorenzini, lastly: “2NT. In my system, the sequence continues as Gazzilli. The 2NT bid therefore shows six cards in Spades and an unspecified four- or five-card minor in a mid- or max-range hand. After the 3♣ relay, I will show a mid-range 6-5.”

Moving away from these original opinions, it is the 3♦ bid that received a large majority of votes. However, in reading the comments that follow, you will see that not everyone agrees about the forcing nature of this bid.

Kokish: “3♦. Very good distribution, not necessarily strong in terms of points.”
Quantin: “3♦. Despite East’s take-out double, I can still easily make a game, or even a slam (♠5 ♥J985 ♦A976 ♣A983 in North). This jump to 3♦, which is still forcing, shows a 5-5 that is powerful in terms of playing tricks.”
Rombaut: “3♦. I could say 2♦ or 4♦ but I think that saying 3♦ followed by Spades will give the best description of my hand, which, roughly speaking, has four losers.”
Jill Meyers: “3♦. After the double, 3♦ is not forcing but strongly encouraging and very distributional.”
Bessis: “3♦. Very encouraging 5-5 but non-forcing after the double. I could be giving up on a game in 4 Spades, it’s true, if Partner has two small spades and an ace… But for one thing, I cannot suppress this wonderful diamond suit and for another, the spades will not always be breaking well on this sequence… And, finally, I cannot really see what else I could come up with (4♦ would show six spades and 5 hearts in my system)!”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-68f23a5" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-68-f-23-a-5-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-68-f-23-a-5-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember: Even more sequences to clarify when the opponents make a take-out double: do any bids stay forcing or should you always redouble first?

Scores Deal 5

3♦: 100 (17 votes)
2♠: 5 (1 vote)
2♦: 5 (1 vote)
4♦: 5 (1 vote)
2NT: 5 (1 vote)

Deal 6: Broken heart

Another deal that provoked a good scattering of votes. From the National Division Mixed Pairs, it earned us a lovely zero as we were not able to stop below 6 Hearts, when the hand opposite was ♠AKJ5 ♥10542 ♦5 ♣Q1065 and we were therefore supposed to play in No-Trumps to score a top. Some, hoping for decent hearts opposite, decided not to beat around the bush and opted for Exclusion Blackwood with 4♠ or, even more ambitious, for 5NT as “Josephine”: a Grand Slam Force.

Thus, Combescure: “4♠. Most experts insisted on the fact that choosing the wrong opening bid leads to a difficult position and all were looking for solutions to find out a bit more about Partner’s hand before committing themselves to a hopeless contract in Hearts. I am sharing them with you here, in no specific order:

Lévy: “3♠. Tactical Splinter; the hand is obviously too strong for a technical use. I intend to continue with 4♥ over 3NT (poor trumps, Queen-fourth at best) and 5NT over 4♥ (good trumps, no ace to show as a control).” Lorenzini: “2♠. It is not certain that we need to play in a heart slam: our partner holding ♠76 ♥J542 ♦73 ♣KQ1064 will mean we can claim in 7 Diamonds! I think that it is good to keep the bidding at a low level in order to allow Partner to describe his hand: I would therefore have bid 2♠, a two-way bid: either natural or a heart fit. Over my partner’s potential 2NT relay, I will have the choice between a jump to 4♥ or a bid of 3♣ to show a big diamond single-suiter without four cards in Spades.”
Kokish once again has a system that has been worked on a lot: “3♣. North bids 3♦ with all normal hands. Over that, I will be able to bid 4♥, which shows specifically four trumps, a void in the fourth suit and enough strength to envisage slam but with one disadvantage (in Trumps) that is stopping you from risking going to the 5-level. If he bids 3NT, same continuations. If he bids 3♥, I will say 5NT. The only slight trouble is if he bids 4♣…”

Pacault: “3♣. Too much stuff for a splinter or 4♦. What is more, playing in Hearts is probably not necessary, or is even detrimental with these diamond winners. We might make thirteen tricks in Diamonds when twelve in Hearts would be impossible. It is therefore useless to show this heart fit for now (or probably at all).”
Quantin: “4♦. Diamonds and Hearts. But having not found any good bid, I am resolving to use this artifice, without having the faintest idea what I should do if my partner bids 4♥. I sincerely feel that this hand should have been subject to a game-forcing opening; even more so because in my system, the sequence 2♣-2♦-3♥ shows at least six cards in Diamonds and exactly four cards in Hearts.”
Chemla: “3♠. This is where we pay for not having opened a game-forcing 2♣ or 2♦. Being unable to bid 5NT, when we are not even sure to make 4 Hearts, we are obliged to give them the club lead, which could be fatal. But if my partner encourages with 4♣, I will be able to bid Exclusion Blackwood with 5♠. It will be necessary to manoeuvre cleverly.”

Saporta: “3♣. The bids of 5NT Josephine and 4♠ Exclusion Blackwood are clumsy because they impose Hearts as Trumps. I prefer to go slowly and play in 7 Diamonds with this opposite: ♠AK6 ♥J954 ♦952 ♣KQ6.”
Bessis: “4♦. What a hand! I spent a long time debating between the bids of 3♣, jump shift in a second suit, which we would follow up with 4♥, or this bid of 4♦. 4♦ is much more descriptive but the problem of knowing whether to bid again over 4♥ remains.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-7daac7c" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember: When exceptional hands come up, you often need to manoeuvre with more shrewdness than technique…

Scores Deal 6

4♠: 100 (5 votes)
3♣: 80 (4 votes)
5NT: 80 (4 votes)
3♠: 80 (4 votes)
4♦: 40 (2 votes)
3NT: 20 (1 vote)
2♠: 20 (1 vote)

The winners!

Solmajeur (France) won this bidding competition. Congratulations!

Here are the 10 Funbridge players who scored the most points this month:

#1

Solmajeur (France) –
