Everything is decided by the bidding and then \u2026 <strong>the opening lead.<\/strong> When they are not reached by way of brute force, they are the culmination of long sequences, which, rich in clues, often put the defender on the right track. <strong>But only if he decrypts them correctly!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer and, in particular, understand South actions. 2&#x2660; confirms four-card Heart support in a hand of at least 14-15 points and puts N\/S in a position of offensive bidding. Under that condition, South&#8217;s Pass is forcing and carries the message:<strong> \u201cIn favor of bidding on.\u201d<\/strong> And when South then bids on despite North&#8217;s discouraging Double, he expresses strong slam ambitions, indicating not only a Club control, but also a control in the suit showed by the opponents, Spades. 5&#x2663; directly over 4&#x2660; would have shown a hand with slam interest and Club control but without control in Spades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this information, North jumps to 6&#x2665;. If we add to this fine analysis that South did not use <strong>Keycard Blackwood<\/strong>, we can deduce that he either is void in Spades or that he has no control in Diamonds. This second option is unlikely if we want to justify such clear slam ambitions. <strong>How do we beat this contract?<\/strong> One lead to avoid is the singleton Diamond &#8211; you know already that you must not lead your singleton against a slam when you hold an Ace in your hand. <strong>To lead a Spade is neutral, more neutral than the singleton trump.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is just like betting that the contract goes down naturally. <strong>But the bidding was dynamic and well mastered,<\/strong> which leaves little hope in this direction. The best chance is to lead the Club Ace and hope to find a singleton in East&#8217;s hand &#8211; after all, that would give more weight to his vulnerable 4&#x2660; bid with nothing more than good trump support.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-11-3-1024x934.png\" alt=\"Deal 11\" class=\"wp-image-68105\" width=\"512\" height=\"467\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Post-Mortem<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A tailor-made slam with 25 HCP, which was beautifully bid. Don&#8217;t hesitate to ask questions. South has probably alerted his forcing pass, but maybe not the inferences of the 5&#x2663; bid (and, frankly, I don&#8217;t  know if he has to, it&#8217;s a good question to ask an international director!). It is hard to imagine South heading towards a slam with beating drums with a six-card suit headed by only the Ace or King. As a result, leading your singleton Club can only be detrimental to your interests. <strong>Not only do you not want to ruff, <\/strong>but if your partner has the Club Ace, the slam will go down naturally. In other words, you need to choose between leading from<strong> King-fourth in Hearts or from Queen-fifth in Diamonds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And since you know your classics, a Diamond lead is much more neutral than a Heart lead. <strong>But that is not the real question. The real question, over and over again, is: should you lead neutrally, and wait for the undertrick, or lead aggressively, and create it? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer of 5&#x2663; to <strong>keycard Blackwood,<\/strong> three keycards, from the weak hand is worrying. As soon as the Heart control was confirmed, South took the captaincy of the bidding with only two key cards in his own hand and signed off in the small slam without even asking for the Queen of trumps. He counts twelve tricks only on the basis of his high card points and maybe also on a long Club suit in North&#8217;s hand. You need to discard the idea of a neutral defense, <strong>there are more chances to find the Heart Queen than the Diamond King in partner&#8217;s hand, so you need to lead a Heart.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-16-3-1024x934.png\" alt=\"Deal 16\" class=\"wp-image-68108\" width=\"512\" height=\"467\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Post-Mortem<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One would need three honors in Spades to jump to 2&#x2660; over 1&#x2663;. Here, with 18 HCP South has every reason to seriously consider the Spade slam. With three keycards North is right to accept the slam proposal and thus show a control, even though he has no third Spade. T<strong>he quality of his own suit is an additional reason. <\/strong>The contract has no chance after a Heart lead. The lead of the four of Hearts deprives him of one of the ruffs, leaving only seven tricks from trumps instead of eight.
