To get the correct response, <strong>use Exclusion Blackwood<\/strong>. Nevertheless, be careful not to confuse it with a control-showing cue bid or a splinter. <strong>It should therefore be handled delicately.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-85dbb8f\" data-block-id=\"85dbb8f\"><style>.stk-85dbb8f{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the steps to go through and the conditions under which you can and should use Blackwood: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1) <strong>Enough assets <\/strong>to be able to visualise twelve tricks. <br>2) The <strong>number and quality of your trumps.<\/strong><br>3)<strong> A control <\/strong>in each suit.<br>4) Check that you <strong>are not missing two key cards <\/strong>by checking your number of aces: a 4NT bid to ask about the five key cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And be careful;<strong> never bid Blackwood with a void in your hand. <\/strong>The reason is obvious. The responses to Blackwood do not provide information as to the suit of the aces but the number. If one of the aces shown in response happens to be opposite the void, it is redundantly useless. This problem can only be resolved if the answer shows the suit where the Ace is, as it would after a game-forcing 2&#x2666; opening. Take this convincing example. You open 1&#x2660; as West, with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-4509f82\" data-block-id=\"4509f82\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-4509f82-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-90f34d9\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"90f34d9\"><style>.stk-90f34d9{align-self:center !important}@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-90f34d9{flex:1 1 33.3% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-90f34d9-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"has-text-align-left stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-90f34d9-inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#x2660; A Q 10 6 4 2<br>&#x2665; K Q J 7<br>&#x2666; &#8211;<br>&#x2663; K Q 4<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-7033d67\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"7033d67\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-7033d67{flex:1 1 66.7% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-7033d67-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-7033d67-inner-blocks\">\n<p>The sequence continues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-1-25-1024x230.png\" alt=\"Deal 1\" class=\"wp-image-71622\" width=\"512\" height=\"115\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You have every reason to take charge and the number of tricks you will take depends exclusively on the three key cards: the King of Spades, the Ace of Hearts and the Ace of Clubs. In view of this, you decide to bid Blackwood, 4NT. <strong>But no response can really satisfy you:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the response is 5&#x2663; (three or zero), presumably three aces, <strong>there may or may not be a crucial ace missing; <\/strong>you will not know whether to play in 6&#x2660; or 7&#x2660;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the response is 5&#x2665;, two aces, you have to decide between 5&#x2660; and 6&#x2660; <strong>with no way of knowing.<\/strong> Slam will be 100%, 50% or 0% depending on which key cards you are missing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-34a208b\" data-block-id=\"34a208b\"><style>.stk-34a208b{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you could improve your situation. For example, by continuing with 4&#x2663; over 3&#x2660; and <strong>crossing your fingers in the hope that Responder skips a diamond cue and bids<\/strong> <strong>4&#x2665;.<\/strong> Normal Blackwood will then solve your problem. But if he shows his diamond control, 4&#x2666;, the ambiguity between the King and the Ace of Diamonds will not have been lifted; normal Blackwood will not solve your problem. <strong>What is the solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 Ask Partner for the number of key cards he has aside from the Ace of Diamonds. <strong>How? <\/strong>By jumping to the 5-level (or to 4&#x2660; if Hearts is the trump suit) in the suit in which you are void. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-ed4edc9\" data-block-id=\"ed4edc9\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-ed4edc9-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-1340681\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"1340681\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-1340681-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-1340681-inner-blocks\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-2-28-1024x298.png\" alt=\"Deal 2\" class=\"wp-image-71623\" width=\"384\" height=\"112\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-fbd88ff\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"fbd88ff\"><style>.stk-fbd88ff-inner-blocks{justify-content:center !important}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-fbd88ff-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk--column-flex stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-fbd88ff-inner-blocks\">\n<p>5&#x2666; is Key-Card Blackwood but the responses ignore the Ace of Diamonds. <strong>This is Exclusion Blackwood. <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What are the responses?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They remain unchanged. 30-41, from the level at which the question was asked; here, 5&#x2666;.<strong> Let us apply that to our example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-92eee15\" data-block-id=\"92eee15\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-92eee15-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-6c74a49\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"6c74a49\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-6c74a49-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-6c74a49-inner-blocks\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-3-31-1024x298.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71632\" width=\"384\" height=\"112\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-d769fde\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"d769fde\"><style>.stk-d769fde-inner-blocks{justify-content:center !important}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-d769fde-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk--column-flex stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-d769fde-inner-blocks\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5&#x2665;: 3 or 0 \u2794 Opener jumps to 7&#x2660; (Responder does not have no key cards).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5&#x2660;: 4 or 1 \u2794 Pass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5NT: 2 \u2794 6&#x2660;, an ace or the King of Trumps is missing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6&#x2663;: 2 and the Queen of Trumps, a bid that may also be made with a known-to-be-tenth trump \u2794 6&#x2660;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of you have found it advantageous to invert the responses to Blackwood: 41-30 instead of 30-41. <strong>The good and bad cases balance each other out. <\/strong>In actual fact, you should <strong>only play 41-30 when the &#8220;weak&#8221; hand is responding<\/strong>. After Exclusion Blackwood, due to space concerns, it is necessary to respond 30-41. The same convention can be used by Responder, under the same conditions (that is, the initial steps were successfully negotiated with regard to assets, trump quality and controls). Example. For Responder, the objective is simple: the Ace of Spades is known to be in his Partner&#8217;s hand; he wants to play in 7&#x2660; if his partner has the Ace of Diamonds <strong>(the void in this case is more difficult)<\/strong> or stop in 6&#x2660; if not. He receives the answer to this question by jumping to 5&#x2665;, Blackwood where the responses exclude the Ace of Hearts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-8e147cd\" data-block-id=\"8e147cd\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-8e147cd-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-fdc4419\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"fdc4419\"><style>.stk-fdc4419-inner-blocks{justify-content:center !important}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-fdc4419-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk--column-flex stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-fdc4419-inner-blocks\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-5-19-1024x367.png\" alt=\"Deal 5\" class=\"wp-image-71630\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-76fd5c0\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"76fd5c0\"><style>.stk-76fd5c0{align-self:center !important}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-76fd5c0-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-76fd5c0-inner-blocks\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5&#x2660;: 3 or 0 \u2794 Impossible; Opener has gone wrong somewhere!!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5NT: 4 or 1 \u2794 He is missing the Ace of Diamonds, 6&#x2660;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6&#x2663;: 2 \u2794 Ace of Spades and Ace of Diamonds, 7&#x2660;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6&#x2666;: 2 and the Queen of Spades (Opener thought it good to mention his sixth spade) \u2794 7&#x2660;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do you recognise Exclusion Blackwood?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1) It is always made via an <strong>impossible jump over your partner&#8217;s last bid. <\/strong>This jump always bypasses the level of game. (There are some very rare exceptions to this rule after a minor-suit raise. Forget about those.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2) <strong>Support has been shown or clearly implied. <\/strong>If the support has not been made clear, the jump should be considered natural. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the risks of confusion?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) It looks like a splinter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A splinter never bypasses the level of game. Example:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-6-19-1024x298.png\" alt=\"Deal 6\" class=\"wp-image-71633\" width=\"512\" height=\"149\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>4&#x2665; is a splinter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) It is made in a suit that Partner has bid.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is Exclusion Blackwood if the future trump suit has been clearly determined. This can only happen in very rare sequences. The rule is simple and recurs. If a situation has not previously been defined,<strong> the bid should be interpreted as natural; avoid it at all costs<\/strong>. Examples: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You open 2&#x2660; (weak), your partner jumps to 5&#x2663; and <strong>you have just learnt Exclusion Blackwood. <\/strong>Panic grips you and you don&#8217;t necessarily have the means to tell the difference between: <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>a) &#x2660;K1075 &#x2665;AKQ987 &#x2666;A102 &#x2663;-<br>b) &#x2660;84 &#x2665;A9 &#x2666;- &#x2663;KQJ1087542<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bid should be taken as the version in (b). Spade support has not been clearly shown. With Hand (a), Responder should start by saying 2NT and then jumping to 5&#x2663; over 3&#x2660;; then, the doubt is removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The sequence unfolds:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-45d8817\" data-block-id=\"45d8817\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-45d8817-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-4f367d9\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"4f367d9\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-4f367d9-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-4f367d9-inner-blocks\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-9-10-1024x445.png\" alt=\"Deal 9\" class=\"wp-image-71637\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>5&#x2663; is clearly Exclusion Blackwood.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-7bc6d30\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"7bc6d30\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-7bc6d30-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-7bc6d30-inner-blocks\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-10-11-1024x445.png\" alt=\"Deal 10\" class=\"wp-image-71638\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>5&#x2666; is a natural pre-empt. To bid Exclusion Blackwood, Reponder starts by saying 3&#x2663;, a support-showing cue bid which is game-forcing, then jumps to cue-bid 5&#x2666; over 3&#x2660; (watch out: if Opener jumps to 4&#x2660; over 3&#x2663;, 5&#x2666; goes back to being a control-showing cue bid as there was no jump!). <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4) Responder shows a second suit at an unusual level: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-11-10-1024x230.png\" alt=\"Deal 11\" class=\"wp-image-71641\" width=\"512\" height=\"115\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The 4&#x2665; bid has not bypassed 4&#x2660;: this is not Exclusion Blackwood. Next, you should clarify whether, in your system, 4&#x2665; is a natural bid with six clubs and five hearts or a splinter with spade support. However, look at this sequence: <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-12-9-1024x230.png\" alt=\"Deal 12\" class=\"wp-image-71643\" width=\"512\" height=\"115\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This time, the 4&#x2660; bid is Exclusion Blackwood, following the rule that the jump bid is above game. With six clubs, five spades and a void in Hearts, for example, Responder will say 3&#x2660;; then, later, 4&#x2660;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5) Control or Exclusion Blackwood?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The control-showing cue bid was made above the level of game but without a jump:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-13-10-1024x367.png\" alt=\"Deal 13\" class=\"wp-image-71645\" width=\"512\" height=\"184\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This bid might show a diamond void but it is not Blackwood: there was no jump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer
