Here are their arguments. Lévy: “4♥. I neither have a fit nor an ace, my minor-suit values could well be falling opposite a singleton; it is more prudent to pass at pairs.”
Quantin: “Pass. So, what to do? Only Kerlero, who acknowledges being very pessimistic, settled for 4♠, ready to apologise if we were making 6 Diamonds. At Narbonne bridge club, our guest for this month, there is no need to be bored every day, as they went straight to slam: “5NT. We will say 6♦ over 6♣ from Partner (very strong spade-diamond two-suiter). In principle, if slam is making, we will not play in it as the opponents will bid 6♥ or 7♥. We might go down in small slam; never mind! Most of all, we actually don’t want to miss grand.” The other experts were split into two groups of almost the same size: those who chose a 4NT bid and those who opted for 5♥. It is the latter that, on the whole, I prefer. Lévy summarises the situation: “5♥. Classic convention for describing a two-suiter with Spades and a minor (often six cards) of this quality.”

Chidiac goes into a bit of detail: “5♥. This cue bid shows a strong two-suiter with Spades and a minor with a heart control and very serious ambitions for slam, with the intention of passing over 5♠, correcting to 6♦ over a 6♣ bid and saying more over 5NT, by bidding 6♥ to show the desire for grand slam.”
Jill Meyers: “5♥. I am taking my opportunity to play a slam” and Lhuissier: “5♥. Strong two-suiter with Spades and a minor: if my partner only has two small spades, never mind – we will then play in 6 Diamonds. Nothing ventured, nothing gained; and it will not be my partner who tries something.” I really like this state of mine that does not involve torturing Partner when we hold such a monster.

The alternative, 4NT followed by 5♦ over 5♣, has two advantages: it allows you to stop in 5♦ if Partner has nothing; and it shows a strong hand, as we deliberately bypassed 4♠. But it has one big disadvantage that even those who chose it did not fail to highlight, such as Pacault: “4NT. Does the 4NT bid show hope for slam in Diamonds (when the 5♣ response is followed by 5♦) or a strong spade-diamond two-suiter?” and Quantin: “4NT. Followed by 5♦ over 5♣. Let us examine the four choices by starting with the smallest score. Duguet: “4♦. Hoping to show my spades on the following round. I could also say 4♠ and run to 5♦ if I am doubled but that is riskier”, as well as the Narbonne club: “4♦. We cannot pass. Saying 4♠, blah (they are not beautiful)! And definitely not double: West can extend the pre-empt and, if North says 5♥, that will not be delightful.” OK, OK, we certainly have less likely chances of getting doubled but the most likely game is still 4 Spades and as Lévy said: “4♠. Unfortunately, 4♦ does not still show a two-suiter with Diamonds and a major.” Besides, despite the five bad cards in Spades, it is still this bid of 4♠ that came at the top of the votes.
Lorenzini: “4♠. Complicated but I think that I would have cracked and bid 4♠, which seems to be the most likely contract. Double is out and it is awkward to pass with distribution like this. We would like to play 4♦ as a 5-5 two-suiter with Diamonds and a major but that is not in my system.”
Kokish: “4♠. Getting my excuses ready. Thanks to Lionel for not having asked us what we planned to do if we were doubled..!”
Quantin: “4♠. A dangerous plunge but no more than any other action (pass or 4♦). Double might be the winning option. But if my partner bids 4♥ and I then say 4♠, I am sure this time that the bid shows a (much) better hand.”

Now let us pounce on Quantin‘s comment again in order to emphasise on the misunderstandings that can arise at any moment. Here, double followed by 4♠ over 4♥ could be misinterpreted. Despite that, four experts chose it, including Jill Meyers: “Double. Then 4♠ over 4♥: I play that that shows a spade-diamond two-suiter and not a strong single-suiter with Spades, with which I would have overcalled 4♠ (or 5♠ with a really nice hand)” and Cronier: “Double. If I pass, my partner will most often have a hard time balancing, whereas I have quite a significant chance of making a game. Double is no doubt the most flexible. If I adopt it, I will be forced to bid 4♠ over 4♥ and it will be really necessary to be on the same wavelength as Partner and not to think we are showing a strong hand with Spades. Otherwise, let us go for 4♠.”

All is said… Let us finish with the passers. Rocafort: “Pass. Prefer a low profile. There are several losers: 4♦ would only lead to a road of disaster, 4♠ makes me want to vomit and discretion could be good for us if someone else emerges from the shadows. Obviously, Partner could simply have Ace-King of Spades and end up disappointed…”

Thuillez: “Pass. Hoping that partner reopens. Red against green, I would have bid 4♠.”
Toffier: “Pass. It is necessary for the chosen bid to land well.
