You owe me a third bid, or else you raise my 3♦ to 2♦ and then I show my Heart stopper and we get to 3NT like everybody else.”

South: “I thought about bidding 3♦ over 2♦ but my priority was to find out if you had Spade support, which you don’t have to show over 3♦. I understand your arguments but you could have a much weaker hand, 11HCP without the Ace of Diamonds for example, and playing game becomes very far-fetched.”

The verdict

These arguments are very instructive. We discover the character of the two players and a mixture of justified assertions and unsuspected errors. Here, North has no doubts, the kind of remarks he makes are often well founded, but he misses the point. Third suit forcing is not autoforcing, opener must distinguish, when he can, openings in the lower range (11-13HCP) from those in the higher range (14-16HCP). In the sequence above, after 2♥ the bids 2♠, 2NT and 3♦ are all made with 11-13HCP and are non-forcing, so South obviously has the right to pass. On the other hand, the correct bid is not obvious. North is right when he says 3♥ is forcing and shows four-card support, and he is right again when he refuses to jump to 3NT without a Club stopper. This bid would show the 14-16HCP range, but it would also promise stoppers in Hearts and Clubs. To show a maximum opening hand without a natural bid available, the solution is to use the fourth suit and bid 3♣. This bid shows a stopper problem in one of the two suits and neither promises or denies a stopper in one of the two suits. Over 3♣, 3♥ confirms a Heart stopper, 3♦ shows good Diamond support or the lack of a Heart stopper. North also criticized his partner’s bid. He’s not completely wrong when he says that South could bid 3♦ and that this would make things easier. But bidding 2♥ has its merits, not so much to find a 5-3 Spade fit, but rather because with two Aces and the Jack in partner’s suit, a 3 No-Trump contract is within reach. On the other hand, passing over 3♦ is reasonable.

The non-forcing 3♦ bid over 2♥ is responsible for the accident.

Problem 2

(*) Hearts and a minor.

The fact

A laydown vulnerable game – missed. Inviting you to bid game with a 4-3-3-3, only three trumps and one useful honor is going to lead us to defeat too often, and if you pass, even the three-level may already be too high.”

South: “Yes, but 3♥ is just a necessary courtesy to cover the case of a strong overcall and, without any other bid available to show a two-suiter with Hearts and a minor, I could be even stronger. Vulnerable, this is certainly worth a try. Let me remind you that with a more encouraging hand, you can also respond 2NT, some sort of cue-bid, and then over 3♣ or 3♦, bidding 3♥ would show true game interest.”

The verdict

It’s difficult to blame one of the players for this bad result. South doesn’t feel concerned, he doesn’t have an alternative bid at his disposal. North has analyzed his options well, understood that only one of his two Kings was going to be useful, and concluded that it was reasonable to pass. Difficult to throw stones at him. South’s remark is nevertheless judicious. 3♥ is the weakest way of showing support, simple politeness, as he points out. Facing an overcall showing a major and a minor, 2NT is used as relay showing interest in playing game.

You’ll tell me that this is all well and good, but if we accept North’s Pass over 2♥, how can this game be reached? By limiting 2♥ and 2♠ (the shown major and a minor) to the strength of a minimum opening bid.
