When, instead, South tried to show the two-suited nature of his hand via a 4&#x2665; cue-bid, his robot partner decided that 4&#x2660; would be a good place to play at matchpoints. You might think it unlikely that spades is the right game if partner could not bid 4&#x2660; over East\u2019s 3&#x2665;. It turns out, though, that the robot was right\u2026 if declarer was up to the task!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>West leads the &#x2665;A and you ruff. Your first decision is how to tackle trumps. <strong>The problem with crossing to dummy in diamonds to play a spade to the jack is that, if the finesse loses, <\/strong>West will be able to cut you off from dummy by playing a second round of diamonds. You therefore decide to play trumps from the top. Both defenders follow to the &#x2660;A-K but, when you play a third round, West discards a diamond and East wins with the &#x2660;10. East now plays the &#x2665;K, forcing you to ruff with your penultimate trump.<strong> How should you continue?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot afford to play your last trump, as a flurry of hearts is sure to follow. Nor is a club to the jack any good: East may be able to win, draw your last trump with his &#x2660;Q and, again, <strong>play a heart for his partner to cash plenty of winners.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the table, declarer crossed to dummy in diamonds and advanced the &#x2663;J. When East covered with the &#x2663;K, though, declarer\u2019s goose was just about cooked.<strong> He won with the &#x2663;A and played on diamonds,<\/strong> but East ruffed the third round with his master trump and forced declarer\u2019s last trump with another heart. Declarer could cash the &#x2663;Q, but he then had to concede the last two tricks to East\u2019s higher club pips.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Did you spot the winning line of play?<\/strong> Declarer was quite right to cross to dummy with a diamond after ruffing the second round of hearts. What he then needed to do, though, was to ruff a third round of hearts with his last trump, removing East\u2019s last card in that suit. Declarer can then overtake the &#x2666;J and run diamond winners.<strong> East can ruff whenever he likes but, when he does so, he will have only clubs left.<\/strong> With East forced to lead away from the &#x2663;K, declarer is assured of a re-entry to dummy with the &#x2663;J, enabling him to pitch his remaining club losers on dummy\u2019s diamonds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This line of play brings in eleven tricks, losing just two trumps.
