You call for the <strong>&#x2663;<\/strong>Q from dummy, which is allowed to win.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You notice that the diamond suit will play for two tricks if you can find the ten onside. You will need to lead diamonds twice from the dummy, though,<strong> so at trick two you play a diamond to the nine.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>West wins with the &#x2666;10 and exits with a trump. You draw trumps, cogitate for a while, cash your &#x2663;A, and eventually try playing ace and another diamond, hoping that West will have to win and play a heart or give you a ruff and discard.<strong> No luck:<\/strong> East wins with the &#x2666;Q and fires a heart through your king to put the game one down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At which point in the hand did you notice that you started with ten virtually top tricks?<strong> You didn\u2019t?<\/strong> Go back and take another look at the whole deal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How many club tricks did you make? <\/strong>After playing the &#x2663;Q at trick one, declarer can make only two tricks in that suit. By making a plan and counting tricks before playing to trick one, declarer should count six trumps, three clubs and one diamond. Win the opening club lead in hand with the ace, draw trumps with the king and queen, and now play a second round of clubs to the queen. East takes the &#x2663;K and leads a heart. The defenders can take two heart tricks but that will be their lot. You can win the diamond return with the ace, cross to dummy with the &#x2660;A, and discard both diamond losers on dummy\u2019s &#x2663;J-10.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No lead beats the contract legitimately, <\/strong>but the club lead offers declarer a chance to go down because he plays to trick one without thinking through the whole deal. <strong>Don\u2019t fall into the trap:<\/strong> make a plan and count your tricks before playing to trick one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-30bd8c7\" data-block-id=\"30bd8c7\"><style>.stk-30bd8c7{height:30px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What did you think about this article?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Share your opinion in the <em>Comments<\/em> section!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many players went wrong on this deal from a Funbridge Teams Tournament.
