I play in 3NT after a Stayman bid.

I receive the favourable lead of the ♥K placing ♥KQ10 with my LHO. I have five certain and immediate tricks (2♠+1♥+2♣). Three suits can bring me two extra tricks:

My ♣ length if the ♣ are breaking 3-3.

The ♦ if the finesse against the ♦J is successful (♦x to the ♦10).

The ♥ thanks to the known winning finesses.

You must start working on the ♥. If I make use of my ♣ length, I am dependent on a hazardous 3-3 break and the ♣ blockage obliges me to use all my entries.

I take the ♥K with the ♥A and return ♥x. The opening leader rises with the ♥Q and persists in ♥ to dummy’s ♥9. My RHO discards the ♣2 and then the ♦8. And here I am with seven certain tricks. How can I find the missing tricks? Analysing the opponents’ discards gives me the solution.

The ♣2 is probably discarded from a 5-card holding. With her singleton in ♥, Argine often has a 5431 distribution. She often discards in her 5-card suit as it is less risky and she doesn’t want to be weakened in more fragile suits.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-43290fa" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-43290-fa-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-43290-fa-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember: Opponents often discard in a 5-card suit or longer first.

The ♦8 (second discard) is probably discarded from a 4-card holding. Argine seems to find discarding awkward, so I decide to drive the point home and I cash the ♥J to oblige Argine to discard again.

The third discard of the ♦7 confirms my suspicions. In balancing position over 3♣, I have three options:

Let opponents play in 3♣

Bid 3♠

Make a penalty double

If you let opponents play in 3♣, you don’t look like much of a fighter although it may be the best option.

I have a nice fit in ♠. My partner is probably singleton or void in ♣. Bidding higher may be right. Vulnerability and the possibility of winning the tournament incite me to choose the penalty double. My opponents are vulnerable. One down is enough to make me happy. With a score of 200, I will beat all those who win a part-score in ♠. Given my strong holding with ♣ as trumps and the possibility of defending in ♠ to oblige my opponents to ruff, I don’t need much in my partner’s hand to defeat the contract by one trick.

The danger is that my partner holds a very weak hand. 3♣ may not go off. In the end, this is my partner’s ♥J that takes the contract down.

The double is worth 90%, passing 3♣ 30%.
