Unfortunately, there is no adequate opening:

By opening 1♦, I will have to make a splinter bid, which best matches my hand, over my partner’s 1♥/1♠ response. However, the odds are against me. I have a few too many HCP, no nice suit that I could establish (Diamonds) and a big stiff honour in the suit of the splinter. Also, there is a small risk of missing the game if my partner passes my opening.

By opening 2NT, I accurately describe my point range in No-Trumps. But if my partner has a 4-card major or longer, my hand will really be undervalued in a trump contract. For example, if he has five hearts with the Queen in total, I won’t play in game even if it would be a good thing.

Finally, by opening 2♣ followed by 2NT, I don’t describe my point range in No-Trumps well, but I describe it better in a possible major trump suit. My opponent leads a club (possibly from 4 cards) and I will need to make ruffs: there is no question of playing trumps. I use the strong hand as a basis and start by ruffing a diamond, noting that the suit breaks 3-4. Then I cross back in Hearts and play two rounds of the suit: hearts seem to be 2-4. To avoid overruffs by my opponents, I put the loser-on-loser play into practice: I discard my heart on my diamond. I ruff the club return and plays back a heart. West ruffs with the 10 and I ruff his club return again.

At this point, I know all distributions and that the remaining spades break 2-2. I can play the Ace of Spades and another spade with confidence!

These 10 trump tricks in Spades are worth 97% since players who opened 1♦ or 2NT stopped in part-score.

Deal 5: Pragmatic bidding

Opposite my partner’s 1NT opening bid, I am pleasantly surprised to see 19 HCP and 5 cards in Hearts. There is no question of rushing to play in 6NT. Although this contract should make, it is quite possible to have 13 tricks off the top and it is better to wait and see. So, I start with a Jacoby transfer to Hearts followed by a fake suit with 3♣ to make the sequence forcing. My partner supports to Hearts and I am still not in a rush. First, I try to learn as much as possible about his hand by showing the first control available. I learn that he holds the King of Clubs. When he responds 5♠ to my Blackwood bid, I understand that he has a total of 13 points: Ace of Spades, Ace of Diamonds, King of Clubs and Queen of Hearts. I can count 12 tricks off the top. The thirteenth one can be made with the Jack of Spades, the Queen of Diamonds or the Queen of Clubs. In the worst-case scenario, I will take the club finesse and score 50%. No doubt, the right bid from a statistical point of view is 7NT! Partner’s hand is disappointing here since he has no extra useful card, but the club finesse works and I score 80% by making the highest contract.

Deal 6: Double dummy

After my partner’s 1♣ opening and West’s 1♥ overcall, my system allows me to show my 5 cards in Spades directly via 1♠. My partner rebids his clubs, leaving plenty of room, so I have now the choice between 2NT and 3♣. 2NT being more encouraging than 3♣, I prefer 3♣ because I only have one heart stopper and I don’t have any quick tricks to bid 3NT. My partner passes and I bid 3♣.

On the lead of the Queen of Hearts, I am faced with a first problem: with which hand should I take? I am tempted to play a spade to my King immediately. But if I win with the Ace, I am exposed if they break 6-1. I resolve to win in dummy and cross back in Diamonds, noting my opponents’ count (even number of cards in West vs odd in East) before playing a spade. East follows low. Which card should I pass?

The question is tricky from a purely technical point of view, but against Argine, always pass the Jack in this kind of situation. Indeed, Argine defends on the premise that you never make mistakes and rises with the Ace much more often than a human player.

The 9 pushes out the Ace in East who plays back a heart. I win and cross back to dummy by ruffing a diamond, noting, parenthetically, that my 8 of Diamonds has been established. I cash the King of Spades to discard a diamond and now I know everything about West’s hand: based on his spade count, his distribution is 3532 and he has the Ace of Clubs to justify his opening bid. I can now take 11 tricks: a spade ruffed, a club to the Queen and ducking. There is nothing East can do.

I score 92% on the deal since I produced the best bidding (3NT went off) and play, taking 11 tricks.

Remember: in case of doubt, always pass the Jack instead of the King against Argine.

See you at the next tournament in two months!

What do you think of this article by Luc Bellicaud?

Share your view with other bridge players in the Comments section below!

1,300 players took part in the second tournament that I ran on 1 October 2023.
