She decides to hope that her partner has a few bits and pieces and jumps straight to 3NT. <strong>Bold or foolhardy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bidding has been:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bids-sally-brock-1-EN.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80166\" style=\"width:350px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The opening lead is the 6 of Spades and this is what she can see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-df4a497\" data-block-id=\"df4a497\"><style>.stk-df4a497 .stk--block-align-df4a497{align-items:center !important}<\/style><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk--block-align-df4a497 stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-df4a497-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-8303187\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"8303187\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-8303187{flex:1 1 66.7% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-8303187-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-8303187-inner-blocks\">\n<p>She plays the Queen of Spades from the dummy which, unsurprisingly, holds the trick. Obviously if the Diamond suit comes in all will be fine, but if it is going to come in it will do so later. Should she start by playing a Heart or a Club?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some ways it looks attractive to play a Club to the Queen. If that holds, then the Ace of Clubs and another Club might give her three tricks in the suit. \u2018However, the reality is that I am unlikely to come to nine tricks without the Diamond suit, so the aim is not so much to generate more tricks, as to gain information on how to play Diamonds. The odds are that East holds Q-x-x(-x) but that is not necessarily so.\u2019 Accordingly, she starts with the 8 of Hearts covered by the 9, Jack and King. West plays another Spade to the Jack and King. \u2018I can safely exit with a Heart now because East will not have a Spade left.\u2019 So she plays the 3 of Hearts. She is pleased to see West discard a Spade and East wins dummy\u2019s 7 of Hearts with the 10. He can hardly play a red suit now, so he does the best he can by switching to a low Cub to the Queen and King. West cashes the Ace of Spades before returning a Club to the 10 and Ace. La Doyenne has lost four tricks now but she has seen enough.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-c894856\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"c894856\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-c894856{flex:1 1 33.3% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-c894856-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-c894856-inner-blocks\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hand-NS-SB-EN-1-397x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80167\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:150px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>West has already turned up with an Ace and two Kings for his weak 2 opener. East must hold the Queen of Diamonds. So she cashes the Ace of Diamonds and the Ace of Hearts before playing a Diamond to dummy\u2019s King and running the suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The full deal:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagramme-SB-EN-1-1024x971.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80169\" style=\"width:450px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>La Doyenne<\/strong> feels pleased with herself. First, in the bidding. She has 18HCP, leaving 22 for the other three opponents. The odds are that her partner would hold approximately 7HCP, which might give her a chance for game. Then, in the play (her opponent at the other table had played on Diamonds immediately, finessing dummy\u2019s Queen, and gone tumbling down) she had managed to get a count, thus dropping East\u2019s Queen of Diamonds. <strong>Do you see how East might have done better? <\/strong>Suppose that, instead of switching to a low Club, he had played the 9 of Diamonds. <strong>Do you think La Doyenne would have succeeded then?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-c833708\" data-block-id=\"c833708\"><style>.stk-c833708{height:15px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ruffing finesses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>La Doyenne<\/strong> picks up the following cards as South: Both vulnerable, Dealer South<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hand-SB-EN-2-1024x373.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80170\" style=\"width:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>First in hand, <strong>La Doyenne<\/strong> surveys her cards with some optimism. \u20181&#x2666; looks fine for now, and hopefully partner will bid a major.\u2019 As it happens, it is her left-hand opponent who bids 2&#x2666;, showing at least 5-5 in the majors. <strong>La Doyenne <\/strong>fancies her chances defending game in a major, so is not very happy when her partner bids a rather wild 5&#x2666; and East doubles. This is the bidding:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bids-SB-EN-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80171\" style=\"width:350px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>West leads a trump and this is what <strong>La Doyenne <\/strong>can see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-f5fa894\" data-block-id=\"f5fa894\"><style>.stk-f5fa894 .stk--block-align-f5fa894{align-items:center !important}<\/style><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk--block-align-f5fa894 stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-f5fa894-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-d262e60\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"d262e60\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-d262e60{flex:1 1 66.7% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-d262e60-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-d262e60-inner-blocks\">\n<p>The trump lead is rather disappointing. On a Heart lead, for example, she might hope to make a Heart and ten trump tricks on a cross-ruff. <strong>La Doyenne<\/strong> considers winning in dummy and playing a Heart, but that is not likely to work. \u2018Ah, those Club spots look good,\u2019 she says to herself. \u2018As long as West has no more than one honour, I should be able to set up the Clubs.\u2019 So, she wins the trump in hand, plays a trump back to dummy and the Queen of Clubs, covered by the King and ruffed. Now a Spade ruff back to dummy and the 10 of Clubs covered by the Jack and ruffed. Then another Spade ruff in the dummy, and the 9 of Clubs covered and ruffed. Now the Clubs are established, so she just needs to cross back to dummy with a further Spade ruff to reach them. Contract made. I do not have as much defence against a Spade contract as I thought I did. They might even make 5 Spades if I don&#8217;t get a Club ruff. Some at some stage I would have to underlead my Diamond honours.
