Here, in 3 No-Trump, the Club lead establishes four Club tricks for West, whereas you can only count five or six quick tricks for your side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-55bc7ed\" data-block-id=\"55bc7ed\"><style>.stk-55bc7ed{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What chances do you have to make the contract?<\/strong><br>West must have the Diamond Ace for his opening bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you hope to get to nine tricks without ever touching Diamonds?<\/strong><br>In case of a successful finesse in Spades, you could take eight tricks in the majors (if East holds the Spade King, West must have the Heart Jack).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But is this distribution likely enough?<\/strong><br>With the Spade King onside, West would only hold 11HCP, which hardly justifies an opening in second posi\u0002tion, even with a decent five-card minor. In reality, you are unlikely to find East with the King of Spades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-8874f90\" data-block-id=\"8874f90\"><style>.stk-8874f90{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Playing IMPs,<\/strong> taking this tiny chance costs only 2 IMPs in the event of failure (going down by two tricks instead of one), whereas making the contract is worth 10 IMPs. It\u2019s therefore not unreasonable to try it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In matchpoints,<\/strong> however, this option is not at all appropriate: You\u2019ll get the lowest score if you unsuccesfully try to find the Spade King in East\u2019s hand (-100 for two down).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s possible to go for a better score (-50 for one down) by giving up the idea of making your contract and simply doing your best to take eight tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-aa998a9\" data-block-id=\"aa998a9\"><style>.stk-aa998a9{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The full deal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagram-Final-no-miracle-EN-1024x971.png\" alt=\"Diagram\" class=\"wp-image-79905\" style=\"width:400px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>After getting in with the Club Ace, immediately play a Diamond towards dummy.
