In competitive bidding at a high level, you nearly always have three choices: passing, doubling and bidding higher.

You double to score a penalty for defeating the contract.

You bid higher to make your contract or if you think that your opponents have a reasonable chance of making their contract.

You pass when you are not sure, often to let your partner make the final decision.

Can my opponents make 5♦?
No, they passed over 3♦. They declare 5♦ not in order to make it but to prevent us from scoring 4♠=. There is no way we will let them play in 5♦ without doubling.

Can we make 5♠?
Yes, my partner may hold ♠KJxxx ♥Kxx ♦xx ♣xxx for instance.

Is there more to win in 5♠ or 5♦X?
5♠ will score more since vulnerability is not in favour of doubling.

Can I pass to let my partner make the final decision?
In theory, yes. In practice, no. The robot doesn’t identify my pass as forcing.

I decide to try 5♠. My partner is very likely to have the hand mentioned above. He will often hold 5 cards in ♠. With 4-4 in the majors, he would have made a bid other than 4♠.

The dummy scares me. The ♦Q is useless. The ♥Q can be taken with a finesse. Hopefully, North has the ♥10. I can cover the ♥J return with the ♥Q with no risk and since the ♥ don’t break 6-1, I don’t lose any ruff.

5♠= scores 86%.

I am aware that I have been lucky. If the ♥J or ♥10 had been with the opening leader, I went down. Sometimes what makes a good or a bad decision is not much!

Deal 2: 15 sure tricks

My hand has 16 HCP but must not be assessed that way. Because of the 8-card suit, counting your points is not relevant. I have nine sure tricks and only one unguarded suit. I can easily make 3NT opposite ♠xxx ♥Qxxxx ♦Jxxx ♣x.

The 1♣ opening bid has advantages but I choose a strong opening. I can open artificial strong 2♣ and show my ♣ later or choose a game-forcing 2♦ opening. Although my hand rather matches 2♣, I choose 2♦ for several reasons:

If my partner is not terrible, I want to play in game in offence.

If my partner is very weak, the favourable vulnerability will push me to bid 5♣ in defence against a likely 4♠ or 4♥ bid by the opponents.

I am interested in showing aces over 2♦.

Although it is always standard, the game-forcing 2♦ opening bid, with ace response, has many drawbacks. Most top players are no longer using it.

On this deal, it is very effective. My partner shows 2 aces, which allows me to count 12 immediate tricks. When he jumps to 7♣, he necessarily brings one more trick. I can easily sign off in 7NT.

My partner has 17 HCP. He could have directly bid 7NT over 2♦.

Card play is pointless. I will not try the ♦ finesse to make +3!

7NT= is worth 90%.

Deal 3: Be pragmatic

When it is my turn to speak again after the 3♥ pre-empt, I have the choice between two options: take-out double and 4♠ (3♠ would be non-forcing).

I want to play in game in ♠ or ♣. The grand slam in ♣ is still possible if my partner holds ♠x ♥Ax ♦Axxx ♣Axxxxx. But how to get there?

If I start with a take-out double, it will be complicated, if not impossible, to investigate for slam in a minor and a minor-suit contract, which usually leads to a disappointing score in pairs games, is likely to go down. Nobody is held to the impossible. I decide to be pragmatic and jump to the contract which is most likely to make: 4♠.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-3153805" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-3153805-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-3153805-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember: Opponents’ pre-empts make it much harder to find a slam.
