Then you played the Diamond Jack to play the forcing finesse, trying to tempt West to cover with the Queen if she had it. But she didn\u2019t cover, so you went up with the Ace to protect against a singleton Queen to your right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marjorie: <\/strong>\u201cThen I came back to my hand with a Club to the Ace and I saw the Club Jack appear. So I had already seen 9HCP from East who had started with a weak two. I was really happy, I thought that West certainly held the Diamond Queen, otherwise there would have been 11HCP at my right! I confidently finessed and\u2026 disaster: East had the Queen! <strong>But it was normal to finesse, right?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201c<strong>Well no, East is the dangerous opponent. <\/strong>She can take five Spades tricks in addition to the trick she gets in with. You must therefore do everything possible so that she can\u2019t get on lead. You don\u2019t need to take all five Diamond tricks. Now, if East has three Diamonds to the Queen, you have to be a magician to make your contract. On the other hand, you can make 3 No-Trump if East has the Queen singleton or doubleton or whenever West has it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marjorie:<\/strong> \u201c<strong>So I had to cash Ace-King of Diamonds from the top?<\/strong>&#8221; And if the Queen didn\u2019t fall because it was neither singleton nor doubleton, I had to play another Diamond, hoping West had it? But it\u2019s a shame to lose a trick when the Queen of Diamonds is to my left!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cThis is the price to pay to take the best chance not to lose a trick to East who is the dangerous opponent. On the other hand, if East discards on the second round, don\u2019t forget to play the Diamond 10 from dummy to ensure your overtrick. If you let yourself go, playing a small card for the 9, West could duck and, stuck in your hand, you\u2019d be reduced to just made.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marjorie: <\/strong>\u201cI can even play the 9 on the King, it also works. But you must admit all the same that it\u2019s nonsense to open 2&#x2660; with 11HCP!\u201d <strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cNo. You know, East was in third position. When her partner is a passed hand, she can let her imagination run free. She can open very weak or a little stronger if she thinks there is no game to be made. That\u2019s why you always have to be careful.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>She:<\/strong> \u201cOkay, but with 11HCP and a six-card suit, it was still possible that they make game on her side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cYes, that\u2019s true when opener has a singleton and useful honors. But here, this is not at all the case. The Queen of Diamonds and the Jack of Clubs are dubious if not unnecessary values. East has eight losers opposite a passed hand. It\u2019s not very likely that she\u2019ll provide what is needed to make game. The only way of making a game contract would be to find a huge fit opposite and shortness in Hearts for instance. With such a hand, West could leap to 4&#x2660; to pre-empt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Her:<\/strong> \u201c<strong>That\u2019s a good lesson. Now I will be wary. And what\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong> I\u2019ll take some liberties too when I\u2019m in third seat!!
