I would have got 18 votes for Double and nothing to comment on. But here it is a multi 2♦ opening. Of course, this convention has its disadvantages, but in some cases, it can cause more trouble than a classic weak 2 opening. Some play a specific defensive system consisting in overcalling with 2♥ to show a take-out double of hearts, a convenient convention in the present case.

Rocafort: “2♥. My defence against a multi is: https://roquibridge.wordpress.com/systemes/defense-contre-2k-multi/. 2♥ is a take-out double showing a heart shortage” or Adad: “2♥. Take-out double of hearts. Partner reacts as if the bidding went 2♥-Double.” I will need to check what they would do with ♠K42 ♥AQJ1084 ♦Q108 ♣3. However, with all balanced hands of 13-15 HCP and hands of 18+HCP, the most common defence against multi 2♦ is a double.

Quite surprisingly, Double was chosen by six experts only. Pacault: “Double. Diamonds and opening strength or 19+ HCP.” Rombaut: “Double. And I will make another take-out double of hearts to show both my strength and distribution.” Nathalie Frey: “Double. Too many points to pass on the first round.” Justin Hackett: “Double. And I will double again if they bid Hearts. Too strong to pass and double later.” That is the tricky part. Can you consider doubling after 2♦-Pass-2♥-Pass-Pass with this hand as with ♠A852 ♥10 ♦K1053 ♣A632, that is 8 points less (classic protective double over a weak 2♥)? Hard to find your way around after that.

This opinion is not shared by the majority of experts who prefer passing. Either the double means something else, like for France Seniors pair Schmidt-Toffier: “Pass. The double shows either a balanced hand not falling into the 2NT range or a hand with which we would have doubled a weak 2♠ opening. We must wait until it comes back to us after the opponents bid Hearts.” Or the double shows a flat hand if it promises more than 18 HCP.

That is in substance what some experts say. Kokish: “Pass. Usually, you should be able to make a take-out double of hearts later and it won’t be considered as a protective double. Doubling now would show a balanced hand of 14-16 or 19+ HCP.” Jill Meyers: “Pass. If the opponents bid Hearts, I will double at any level. It is the best way to describe my hand.” Kerlero: “Pass. For me, the double is used with balanced hands of 13-15 HCP or some strong hands of 19+ HCP. With a major singleton, I pass and then I double.” As a result, the protective double is unlimited. It is better to know that to choose flexible responses.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-edfaea3" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-edfaea-3-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-edfaea-3-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
Multi 2♦ is becoming more and more popular. I prefer simplifying the rest of the sequence than starting with 3♥.” Kokish, as usual, summarises the situation: “4♦. The chances of making a slam are too high to bid 3♥ and pass over 3NT or bid 3♠ and get into trouble if North supports to 4♠ or goes back to 4♦. 4♦ sets the trump suit and allows to bid 4♠ over the 4♥ cue bid, highlighting the club problem. Since North doesn’t hold the King of Diamonds, it is highly likely that he has controls in Hearts and Clubs. And too bad for the risk of going down in 5♦ opposite ♠- ♥AK4 ♦AQJ10542 ♣J63 if we lose a club ruff!”.

Despite that they made a compelling case, some members of the jury chose another bid. Their explanations deserve to be heard. Schmidt: “3♠. Length or no stopper in Hearts (it is even the priority).”

Tignel: “3♥. My first idea was to simplify the sequence by bidding 4♦ since Partner promises nice Diamonds. If North raises (3♠ = balanced, 4♣-4♥ = shortage in Clubs-Hearts), I will play in Spades. They chose two options, 5NT and 6♣, which have the same meaning: “Partner, choose your slam”. Why taking this risk whereas you are certain of scoring a penalty in-between? Rocafort: “5NT. I hesitated to hold but vulnerable West’s bid suggests that he fears the opponents’ slam, so let’s trust him. With no club opposite, you can take it easy. With one club, which is less likely, it’s going to be a bit tense.” Rombaut: “5NT. We should make a slam easily, bidding the grand slam is too ambitious for me because it would punish a partner who put himself on the line with a light double.”

Tignel: “5NT. As a rule, you pass with balanced hands when a pre-empt propels you to the 5-level. But North is probably void in Clubs (at worst singleton), in which case you have every chance of winning a slam. I admit not having discussed with my partner about the meaning of 5NT and 6♣ in this sequence. In doubt, 5NT seems more flexible to me because, as a rule, it invites to find the best strain when no fit was found.” Adad: “5NT. Here I would have probably reopened with a double if North had passed: you don’t play in 5♣ free and too bad if it makes. If my partner had the same reasoning, the wisest course of action would be to bid 5♥ or pass. If he bid, I prefer 5NT over 6♣ which would promise both majors.”

Toffier: “6♣. Producing a take-out double at the 5-level when vulnerable takes two forms: either a hand with lots of HCP or a weaker but unbalanced hand like ♠AQ53 ♥KQ42 ♦AQ65 ♣2 or ♠AQ53 ♥K10742 ♦AJ65 ♣- for example. In both cases, I don’t see how the slam could go down.” Kokish: “6♣. Maybe we are at too high a level, but we have an 8- or 9-card fit in a red suit with possibilities for discarding on North’s spades. Passing avoids many complications and even a low penalty could bring points if many players go down in their contract with our cards.”

Eight experts chose that simpler option. Their opinion is quite clear-cut: you don’t venture to bid at the 6-level with a balanced hand.

Schmidt: “Pass. The 5♣ double means above all ‘I want to protect my score’. It promises neither the six key cards missing (Ace-Queen of Spades, King-Queen of Hearts, Ace-Queen of Diamonds) nor a fit in all suits. Six out of six really is a lot, although five would be enough to make the slam if there is a void in Clubs. In fact, my decision will depend on the assumed strength of the field because the situation has good chances of happening again. At a beach festival, the majority of players will pass with my hand. In the final of the World Championships, they would reveal themselves to be more gung-ho (5NT being the bid to make) and I would be tempted to follow them.”

Lévy: “Pass. Constant attitude with a balanced hand, except with ambitions for slam, which would mean bidding 6♣, a bit too much.” Quantin: “Pass. No other choice with such a balanced hand.” Jill Meyers: “Pass. This hand is neither very strong nor offensive (with these minor honours and weak intermediates in the majors) to motivate a direct action. But the distribution justifies an action because Partner will not necessarily be able to overcall. Once you have decided to bid, the question is to know whether you can afford a 4♣ overbid, major two-suiter (Partner will probably take us to a level that is too high if we were able to make 4 Hearts or 4 Spades), or whether we must overcall in our long suit at the risk of missing a fit in the shorter suit. A very hard decision.” Jill Meyers: “3♠. I don’t have enough for 4♣ (major two-suiter). That is why some don’t want to take that risk. Like Rocafort: “4♥. Let’s be honest. Not that I don’t want to double, but we would be too concerned if Partner stopped there, which is very likely to happen. Same with a pass. Too little is needed opposite to cash many tricks.”

Toffier goes a bit more into detail about the 4♥ bid. “Despite 11 HCP, passing seems unrealistic to me. Anyway, I will face the same problem on the next round, after my partner’s (likely) second double. If North has three hearts and four spades, he will bid 4♠, even if it means playing in 5 Diamonds if I had only three. Indeed, it is almost certain that North holds at least three diamonds if he has only four spades and three hearts.”

Jill Meyers shares the same concerns as Rocafort but chose the other major: “4♠. I’m afraid of doubling and seeing everyone pass. So, I choose my best major.”

Thuillez: “4♠. Between 4♥ and 4♠, there is nothing obvious. My distribution is too nice to pass and anyway, it is one step back, two steps forward. And regarding the choice of the suit, maybe Spades because they are nicer and I could possibly bid 5♥. In any case, I don’t want to double with this kind of hand and I don’t have enough points for 5♣.”

Despite the risks associated to a pass, three experts chose it anyway. Pacault: “Pass. Partner must be informed of the club shortage. No need to push him to bid higher than he should. Doubling would be an option if it described both 4-card majors.” Rombaut: “Pass. I am minimum and I don’t know which major to choose. For once, I recognise the deal! Indeed, I would have bid 3♥ because I think that if Partner has two hearts, it is better to play in 4 Hearts than 3NT or 5 Diamonds, but it’s not crystal-clear. I bid 4♠ over 4♦ to sort of invite to slam”.

He is supported by Lévy: “4♠. No, I wouldn’t have bid 3♥. 3♦ is better anticipation. Now, it is difficult to show forcing support for Diamonds, especially if 4NT is a natural brake, as I fear. So, I respond 4♠. North doesn’t have two small spades and I let him bid Blackwood (but jumping to 6♦ is a good bet and a bid that will get more votes).” and Saporta: “4♠. I would have bid 3♦ on the previous round. Now, I have no solution left. I let North bid Blackwood.”

Indeed, we can reasonably think that North doesn’t have two small spades. (He would probably have bid 3♠ over 3♥ to try to reach 3NT. With two direct losers in Spades, the 5 Diamonds contract is less attractive.) In that case, this false cue bid doesn’t cost anything and allows North to bid Blackwood and sign off in 5♦ or 6♦.

Some experts like Adad don’t rack their brains: “6♦. I would have settled for 3♦ over 3♣, if only to let Partner raise or make a super forcing bid in Hearts. Also, after 3♦, North’s third bid would have better described his hand. Here we know that he is at least 6-4 with at most one heart, but we have no bid at our disposal to let him know that we have good cards for a slam, except if we have agreed, as in my system, that 4NT denies a spade control but shows a hand that is stronger than a 5♦ raise.”

Nathalie Frey is on the same wavelength: “4NT. Positive, not natural. I expect my partner to respond to Blackwood.” Very convenient, indeed! But this interpretation is not shared by everyone!

Pacault: “4NT is a Blackwood with a diamond fit because 4NT is always Blackwood when a hand has described a solid 6-card (or higher) suit in an unbalanced hand.”

After all these original and clever bids by those who are considering the slam, there is the majority of experts who resign themselves to signing off in game.

Schmidt: “5♦. Yes, I would have bid 3♥. It seems that my partner has neither the Ace nor the King of Spades (as he didn’t bid 3♠ or 3NT). In that case, his (game-forcing) 3♣ bid comes from 6-4-2-1, necessarily with the (probably stiff) Ace of Hearts, or 7-4 (like ♦AK109xxx ♣AKQx). 4♥ may be the winning bid. 6♦ too, but that would be a wild guess for me.”

Quantin: “5♦. I would have bid 3♦ over 3♣. Now, I’m stuck and I don’t have any options other than 5♦ and 6♦. Let’s keep a low profile as we aren’t certain that all the cards will be very useful. I don’t think that, in that case, 4NT shows a nice 5♦.”

Tignel: “5♦. North doesn’t raise and doesn’t bid 4♣ (5-5), 3NT or even 3♠ (asks for a stopper for 3NT). Would he be 7-4? In that case, my major points aren’t worth much, so I prefer settling for 5♦ rather than making a questionable 6♦ gambling bid (I have no conventional bid agreeing Diamonds…). Yes, I would have bid 3♥: not really less flexible than 3♦ but much more natural!”

Hackett: “5♦. Very difficult to choose between 3♦ and 3♥.” Chemla: “5♦. What else? Two aces may well be missing.”

I understand their point of view, but knowing that they would make the same bid with ♠J86 ♥K98652 ♦42 ♣43, it is still boring, though.
