I was green against red and had a 4-4-2-3 17-count:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hand-10.png\" alt=\"Hand\" class=\"wp-image-83146\" style=\"width:400px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Should one use the conventional 2&#x2663; bid to show both majors? Several factors ought to be considered. In general, overcalls over 1NT are based more on distribution than on high-card points, which are only a slight compensation. Moreover, the vulnerability is not exactly in my favour: I might well be able to take 1NT down by two, which would win me more than making 2&#x2660;. To finish, I might well go down in a nasty contract in a 4-2 fit&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these factors make me strongly lean towards passing, and even more so since my partner still has the opportunity to balance. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-1-Luc-Bellicaud.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83148\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:500px;height:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The full layout does not back me up here, as we easily make 2&#x2660; and need to find a difficult defence to beat 1NT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 7<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-2-Luc-Bellicaud.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83151\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:500px;height:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>After a normal sequence, I reached the contract of 4&#x2660; on a trump lead. When the King of Spades turned out to be onside, I had 11 tricks and could make twelve if I only lost one in the minors. The simplest approach is to take a ruff in the short hand, followed by a double finesse in Clubs. However, when I played the King of Diamonds, the 3 appeared on my left and the 8 on my right, which made a 5-2 break likely. Indeed, Argine generally plays the third card from a four-card holding, which therefore ran the risk of the 2 being on my right, unless he had J108x. So, I changed tack and played Clubs straightaway, hoping for a potential discard for my diamond. West rose with the King and played another trump. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-3-Luc-Bellicaud.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83152\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:500px;height:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>From here, I could check what was happening in Diamonds: I cashed the Ace and saw the 6 on my right. He had to have J1086 since his partner would have led the Jack of Diamonds with J10743 rather than a trump.
