With slam interest, it is correct to use 2NT, a relay that asks opener to give more information about his distribution. To choose a suit for your trial bid, name your lowest suit with at least three cards. The trial bid does not specifi\u0002cally ask partner for help in that suit to bid on to game, but rather to evaluate the overall quality of the hand. Under these conditions, West has no more reason to lead a Club, the suit of the trial bid, than a Spade, the unbid suit. He must simply realize that his oppo\u0002nents have bid a game with minimum stren\u0002gth, most often with two balanced hands. There is no sign of urgency and no reason to lead from an honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The full deal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagramme-1-AL-EN-1024x971.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83416\" style=\"width:400px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Post-mortem :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is impossible to make this contract without the help of the defense. East takes the Ace of Hearts and continues the suit. Declarer will take the Club finesse hoping to discard a Diamond from dummy, and then try Spades. When the Club Queen and both Spade honors are offside, declarer will likely end up going down by two tricks. On a lead from one of the two black Queens, it is easy to win the contract. You should have defended at 5&#x2665;. And you are probably right, your chances of bea\u0002ting 4 Spades opposite a non-vulnerable preemptive raise are near zero and the sacrifice must be a very good operation for your account. But there\u2019s no point in crying over spilt milk. Yes, your chances of beating that contract are slim but if there is one chance, you have to grab it. You have at best one Heart trick and the hope to get two Diamond tricks. But that is still not enough. You partner should not have more than one honor and that is likely to be the Heart King, so a useless one anyway. Oh wait\u2026 The King of Hearts could be an entry, an entry to play a Diamond through and then succeed in taking four tricks if, by chance, partner is short in Diamonds. To succeed in this imaginative and ambitious plan, you must underlead your Ace of Hearts and put a preferential Heart eight on the table. It did take a miracle to beat this contract and it would have been wiser to defend for one down in 5 Hearts. This lead is obviously quite risky. If East has another King (Clubs or Diamonds), the game goes down naturally, while the underlead of the Ace of Hearts sees the undertrick disappear. Under these conditions, the 3&#x2665; bid over 3&#x2666; is encouraging and 4&#x2665; is a jump on the brake. First things first. If the opponents considered playing a slam, a passive attitude cannot be enough to beat the game. Hoping for a ruff by leading from the doubleton Spa\u0002de is not a good plan. Leading a doubleton Ace against a strong hand gives away a trick too often. If partner has the Spade King, you\u2019ll have a second chance.
