Clearly, if the opponents play in 6♣, we will be on lead and all will be well. But how do we go about getting partner to lead a heart against 6♠ and not giving a ruff-and-discard in Diamonds?

Cronier had the time to think about it since it was he who submitted the problem to me: “5♥. I know this deal. At the table, I recommended bidding 5♥, a bid going for 6♦ but with a heart lead against an opposing spade or club contract. I still advocate that.” The other experts were not of the same opinion and most preferred to leave the problem for later, more or less aware of the danger. I have chosen the most detailed and convincing explanations.

For the waiting bid of 3♦: Lévy and Tignel: “3♦. I wish to play 6 Diamonds as offensive and defensive, as I doubt that the opponents, both with a diamond void, will easily allow me to play in 5 Diamonds… But if they sacrifice in 6 Spades, North absolutely must not give away the contract by leading the Ace of Diamonds. Yet, if I double 6♠ (Lightner), my partner will probably think that I have a club void. My idea is therefore to be able to mention Hearts at some point in the auction (5♥ over the probable 4♠ or 5♣ by the opponents), hence the timid 3♦ bid, it not being possible for the sequence to end there. The other bids entail risks: bidding 4♦, 5♦ or 6♦ will prevent me from mentioning Hearts if the opponents bid slam before my next turn. And bidding 3♥ (or 4♥) might be punished by a bid of 6♥ by Partner…”

For a bid that means we get to have our cake and eat it too (and was therefore chosen by the majority…): Schmidt: “4♣. Up to which level will we bid and how can we direct the lead? I envisage there being three strategies: a smokescreen (6♦), as either of the opponents could get carried away with their diamond void and bid over the top when I have a possible Lightner double against 6♠ (provided it is not misunderstood). Saying 5♥ before changing to 6♦, which tells Partner what needs to be done… as well as the opponents! Or finally, not rushing things, by bidding 4♣ in anticipation of a future Lightner double. I choose – regretfully – the latter option. I hope both to better be able to diagnose which level to go to and to make my potential Lightner double very clear (as with a club void, I would have bid 5♣ and not 4♣). If my partner leads the Ace of Diamonds regardless, we will have to explain over dinner.”

Toffier: “5♣. A 5♦ bid with a club shortage. This bid showing some strength, my partner should work out that I have points in Hearts…” There is still time before the 12th August to go through this sequence…

For more offensive bids, to put the opponents’ backs against the wall but which might be more dangerous:

Thomas Bessis: “5♦. If they do not bid 6♣ with their double void in Diamonds, that would be really unlucky… However, I am a bit afraid of them bidding 6♠ and my partner getting the lead wrong if I double… But I do not really see how to avoid that, except perhaps by bidding 3♥ now; but how would that look if my partner bid 5♥ over that?”

Kerlero: “5♦. Are my opponents making a slam? Rather unlikely with me having the Ace-King of Hearts! Can we make 6 Diamonds? Rather unlikely after the opponents’ strong bids. So no use in broadcasting my singleton. If they bid 5♠, I will say 6♦ but if they bid 6♣, the lead has already been found!”

Chemla: “6♦. The situation is extremely dangerous. We have to cater for two necessities: avoiding a ruff-and-discard or a club, looking for a void, on lead. By doubling 6♠ or 7♠, I am strongly suggesting a heart lead since I have not cue-bid Clubs.”

To avoid that, other experts chose to bid Hearts first, such as Rocafort: “3♥. First of all, I will discreetly check whether everyone took their cards from the same board. Then, this is a matter of strategy rather than technique. Of doing one’s best to dissuade Partner from giving a ruff-and-discard on lead if they end up in Spades and of bidding on quietly to leave East-West room to let off some steam so they leave you be at the 5-level feeling like they have done their duty” or Rombaut: “4♥. To give Partner a lead. Then, I shall bid Diamonds at the necessary level.”

With such disparate responses, I am leaving the scores as they are but I must say that I am not convinced by the heart bids. In any case, with Partner holding the Ace-King of Diamonds, he will not imagine that you hold seven and will never see why he ought to lead a heart rather than a diamond. I am much more convinced that it is necessary to double 6♠, having denied a club void, in order to have a chance of Partner leading a heart, since the double will have forbidden him from leading a diamond.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-edfaea3" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-edfaea-3-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-edfaea-3-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
In exceptional circumstances such as on this real deal, allow your imagination to flow and try to anticipate the rest of the sequence. They were, of course, non-forcing (we only have 10 points, after all) but have the advantage of leaving the auction open in case partner was at the top of his point range. I am presenting those to you, then, as even though I do not agree with their authors, I am very much in the minority… In bidding order:

Nathalie Frey: “2♦. Let us keep the conversation open. Passing would be final and as I do not know at all which is the best contract… As for 2NT, I do not like it at all with 8-fourth.”

Cronier: “2♥. No question of passing with 10 points opposite a vulnerable opening and I have no other bid. I hope that my partner is able to bid again. If he has three cards in Hearts, that is perfect; if he has a good 5-5, it is not bad… If I play in 2 Hearts in a 5-1 fit, that might be just as good as 2 Clubs!”

Saporta: “2♥. The vaguely technical bid (2NT) is not inspiring me. If North passes over 2♥, I hope to make eight tricks thanks to a few ruffs in the long hand. If he bids again, it will be time to show my reserves.”

Harari: “2NT. Too much strength and not enough hearts for 2♥. As for 3♣, that could land nicely if Partner bids again but could also lead to a ridiculous contract in a 4-3 fit. 2NT is a good compromise, the four cards in Spades more or less compensating for the lack of a stop in the suit.”

Rocafort: “2NT. A classic nightmare which no longer makes you sweat in the end. The bid seems rubbish and you are ashamed to make it but when you contemplate the alternatives, you realise that it is not that but the system which is imperfect.”

Hackett: “2NT. I know, I have no stop; but this is the least bad of the bids, as I am too strong to pass.”

Toffier: “2NT. The 2♣ bid having possibly been made with 17 HCP, game cannot be ruled out. 2NT is, without doubt, the most flexible bid for finding a potential 5-3 heart fit. If my partner repeats his clubs at the 3-level, I shall bow out.”

Kokish: “3♣. Not normal to support Opener’s second suit with only three cards but 2NT has too many faults; as for 2♥… If North passes over 3♣, we should make a few tricks, even on a trump lead.”

Pacault: “3♣. I cannot say 3♣ (club pre-empt), nor 2♣ (which would almost oblige me to play in game, with a subsequent 3♦ becoming forcing), nor 2♦ (which, for me, shows five cards in Hearts and 6-10 HCP, a convention which is disparaged by some experts but is the one that has gained me the most in the last ten years). Finally, double risks getting out of control with two cards in Hearts and I play 2♠ as forcing to game (or at least to 4♦).”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-a6bd2c3" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-a-6-bd-2-c-3-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-a-6-bd-2-c-3-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
As usual, discuss carefully whether the bids are pre-empts or raises. Partner held: ♠J875 ♥Q108765 ♦A ♣64. The only winning bid after North’s transfer was 4♠!

It was only bid by one expert, Duguet: “4♠. Misfit in Hearts, four cards in Spades and, if no spade fit, we will play in 4NT. With my partner a passed hand, 4 Hearts cannot be the right contract. And if he passed initially, it might be because he has six hearts and four spades…” That was indeed the case.

Should we bid 3NT (a side-question posed to the experts)? Should we transfer (up to you to see)? In any case, the correct contracts of 3NT (with Clubs 3-2) or 4 Spades were only very seldom reached…

There were not too many who did not complete the transfer. Let us see their arguments.

Lévy: “5♣. I would have doubled. I can also correct 4♦ to 4♠ but the message might not necessarily get through: overcalling 3NT with a bunch of spade winners is also very possible.”

Chemla: “5♣. Some will explain that 4♠ would show four cards with Clubs but they might have some trouble convincing the majority of their partners! However, I remember playing this hand. I honestly believe that you should overcall 4♣, which would easily have allowed us to find our 4-4 spade fit.”

Bessis: “5♣. This series is a nightmare! I would indeed, without a doubt, have bid 3NT, although I bitterly regret that now. At this stage, I have the choice between accepting my fate and saying 4♥ or trying 5♣. To be honest, you may as well toss a coin, as Partner could just as well have ♠Q52 ♥KJ10942 ♦63 ♣63 as ♠Q5 ♥A109542 ♦63 ♣643…

But two arguments cause me to prefer 5♣:

− The fact that my partner passed initially (he did not open a weak 2♥, which he would no doubt have done with seven cards in Hearts and a very weak hand).

− He could have good cards for slam (♠5 ♥J96542 ♦A63 ♣Q63) and going down in 4 Hearts with 1370 available would frankly be a terrible result… So let us therefore go for 5♣.”

Tignel: “4NT. Yes, I would have bid 3NT; doubling would not be suitable with a singleton heart. North knows that 3NT can hide a gambling bid: the 4♦ bid therefore comes either from a weak hand with at least six cards in Hearts, or as the beginning of a description with a hand interested in slam, which is unlikely here, given North’s initial pass. That pass leads one to think that North’s hearts are not very solid and therefore that 4 Hearts will not make. I will take my chance of making 4NT, which confirms a heart shortage and implies club length; which might also help my partner to bid an excellent 5 Clubs, or even 6 Clubs.”

I had the hand with six hearts and four spades myself and I quite sharply reprimanded my partner for having completed my transfer. I hope that the number of experts who opted for 4♥ will console her and that she will accept my apologies…

Kokish: “4♥. I would also have bid 3NT like our unfortunate South. I will complete North’s transfer. He will often have a six- or seven-card suit that he was unable to open with a pre-empt due to one or several disadvantages (void, bad suit, four cards in Spades, two-suiter, too many defensive tricks…). Nevertheless, with my top tricks, this should be fine.”

Pacault and Saporta: “4♥. North knows that 3NT is not necessarily from a balanced hand and only suggests a major-suit contract with at least a solid six-card suit. I would not have bid 3NT but 4♣ (added Pacault).”

Rocafort: “4♥. I am allowing 3NT, not seeing anything else that thrills me; double would almost be suicidal. The hand, aside from the trumps, lends itself nicely to playing in Hearts. I do not see why North would not hold Ace-seventh and I do not imagine that the drawback was just having six hearts and four spades.”

Thuillez: “4♥. Goes with 3NT. I say 4♥ despite the singleton, Partner having demanded the suit.”

Toffier: “4♥. Yes, I would have bid 3NT. In these types of sequence, where Partner knows that I can have a singleton in Hearts (with six or seven club winners, for example), the 4♦ bid promises at least six cards in Hearts.”

Cronier: “4♥. One thing is for sure: my partner has at least six cards in Hearts to make a transfer as a passed hand. If he only has six, they are not very good since he did not open 2♥. There is also the case where my partner holds a bad seven-card suit, where he has to play in 4 Hearts without another choice. On the other hand, which would be awful, is if North declined the 2♥ opening because he had four spades. In short, this is unsolvable. I might consider bidding 4♠, to make him think I have a two-suiter with Clubs, but North might well take that as me having five cards in Spades and that I chose to bid 3NT. I therefore resolve to bid 4♥.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-76645d5" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-76645-d-5-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-76645-d-5-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
There is not one truth on every hand – far from it! This really is the domain where opinions diverge the most and consequently where the IMPs waltz off. Contrary to belief, this is not a question of generation but of interpreting the double in this sequence.

For the supporters of “pass”:
Harari: “Pass. Of course, we might make a slam with a lot of strength opposite. On the other hand, if we put an average 4-4-4-1 hand with 16 points opposite (which is already not a bad hand), we have absolutely no guarantee of making anything at the 5-level (as well as not being sure to land on the right suit if we respond 5♠). I therefore prefer to ensure a positive score”, supported by Cronier: “Pass. Yet another hand that I remember. Frankly, with a hand this balanced, I would have passed. I am sure that they will go down; I have no certainty of making a 5-level contract… Let us take our gift” and Rocafort: “Pass. Not enough distribution or a safe place for setting out after a goal that is too difficult to attain. 5♠ would be a reckless bet on the suit and 6♣ on how high.”

Some go further:

Kokish: “Pass. Sometimes, we are not making anything at the 5-level but can collect 800 in 5 Clubs doubled. This hand is rather flat and North is doing what he can with what he has (so he does not necessarily have a void, or even a singleton, club). Sometimes, we have to act to ensure some compensation for losing out on our vulnerable game.”
Jill Meyers: “Pass. Too balanced a hand. Sometimes, Partner makes a ‘protective’ double with something like ♠A93 ♥K642 ♦AQ762 ♣6.”

Schmidt sums all of this up: “Pass. Then, I will be calm. For me, at this vulnerability, double means no more than ‘I am protecting my score, as I have some strength and we therefore probably had to be making a game, since they sacrificed pre-emptively!’, without promising support in each of the other three suits at all. As an example, imagine ♠A42 ♥K63 ♦AK632 ♣93. Nowadays, the opponents will not always have ten cards in Clubs. Go plus.”

I have to say that I agree with them more. We will more often be able to score 300 or 500 than have a slam to bid and I therefore think that a bit more flexibility is required when defining these high-level doubles. However, this is not the opinion of the majority of the experts who responded.

Some settled for 5♠, such as Pacault: “5♠. Bidding over 5♣ doubled already implies enough strength to hope to make a 5-level contract. Otherwise, you pass”, Rombaut: “5♠. I do not like to punish my partner, who has already dipped his toes in by doubling; let us just try to make 5 Spades” or Chemla: “5♠. This is a minimum. And besides, the contract was going down! But in all honesty, it is impossible to convert the double!” But others look even further ahead and consider playing a slam, which shows the huge difference in the acceptability of the double among these experts when you think about the hands suggested by Schmidt or Jill Meyers!

Here are the arguments by the optimists:

Adad: “6♣. My partner wanted to play at the 5-level in a major, probably in offence given the vulnerability. I have a rather nice hand after my pass over 3♣.”

Toffier: “5NT. I know the theory consisting of wanting to protect our score and therefore passing with hands that are more or less balanced. That is all very well but here, my partner has produced a take-out double at the 5-level, red against green, and slam (small or grand) is no doubt on the table. If he bids 6♦, I will say 6♥ to allow him to choose between the majors.”

Bessis: “5NT. There is no way I am bidding 5♠, hoping all at once to find a good fit, to make exactly eleven tricks and that 5 Clubs going down does not collect at least 500 points. That would be absurd. In that case, I may as well pass and cash what there is to cash. My two options can therefore be summed up as passing or bidding slam. I admit that my decision might depend in large part on my opponents’ style and the likelihood I give them of having eleven clubs on this sequence. As I have quite a spirited temperament and my partner’s double at this level really shows a good hand here (it is not, in my mind, a ‘protest’ double for scoring 300 points rather than 100), I bid 5NT, with the advantage that sometimes, even when I am going down at the 6-level, the opponents will still sacrifice in 7 Clubs against our major-suit slam.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-68f23a5" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-68-f-23-a-5-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-68-f-23-a-5-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
Post-mortem: as Paul Chemla said in his comments, 5 Spades was going down; and yet Partner had six of them! Bidding the seven-card suit collected 17 out of 21 votes. Let us start with the four who disagreed.

Harari: “3NT. Which I would no doubt have bid on the previous round. A reasonable bet. If we are doubled, we should run, without a doubt.”

Tignel: “3NT. With eight playing tricks in hand, we have to bid a game. 3NT is the contract with the highest likelihood of success, even often opposite five cards in Hearts. This is why I prefer not to go through a second double before bidding 3NT: I am too afraid of hearing 4♥ or 4♠.”

Thuillez: “Double. If Partner has five hearts, we might envisage a contract in that suit.”

Cronier: “Double. I have too much for 3♦, I think… If North leaves me the space, I will bid 3♦ on the following round. Over 3♥, I will be in trouble… But the worst is still not certain!” I can hardly throw stones, having had this hand at the table and thought about bidding 3NT before eventually doubling! Without serious consequences, things ended up in 4 Spades doubled for one down. However, on reflection, it is definitely better to bid naturally, as the other experts emphasised. Volcker, concisely: “3♦. I am bidding my suit.”

Kokish: “3♦. Of course, I could bid 3NT and maybe even make that contract but in that case, I could have bid it over 1♠. As a partial or even 4 Hearts could be better, I am bidding naturally. But I would have said 2♦ over 1♠.”

Rocafort: “3♦. I get the impression that the choice has already been made and we are on track now. I admit that I would have been very tempted by 3NT instead of double and would have thought about 2♦. But, in the end, even if we do see eight tricks, the ninth is a very long way away. Partner would need to have an Ace and that is not the picture here. As for playing in Hearts, maybe; but the hand is delicate and North would need to take an extra step in that direction.”

Nathalie Frey: “3♦. I would not like doubling because of the three hearts or bidding 3NT with a singleton club either. I am opting for the descriptive bid.”

Hackett: “3♦. Strong with Diamonds. Maybe too good but I cannot say 3NT with this singleton club and the chance that 4 Hearts might be a better contract.”

Duguet: “3♦. Too afraid of a club lead and I only have eight tricks on a spade lead. Let’s wait for the rest…”

Adad: “3♦. Unarguably under-bidding but this gives the best description of the hand. If my partner cannot rebid 3♥, we have little chance of making a game.”

Bessis: “3♦. I did consider double or 3NT but, at any given moment, you should bid your suits. I do not think that I will skewer a game all that often, as I am confident that my partner will almost always bid again with an ace in his hand (unless he has a singleton diamond). Because saying 3NT really comes down to hoping for an ace opposite. Aside from the fact that it has a good chance of making, saying 3♦ also provides the non-negligible advantage of leaving the option open to Partner of repeating his hearts, in which case, I will end up bidding 4♥… although putting down a seven-card minor and only three trumps in a 4-Major contract does not, as a general rule, appeal to me.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-7daac7c" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
Bid naturally!
