Playing in a notrump contract, the idea is to break the defensive communications by giving a defender the lead with a choice of only losing options. He can either exit without cashing all of his winners, allowing you to set up your tricks in peace, or he can cash his winners and in doing so squeeze his partner. It\u2019s a fairly rare beast, but not unknown. This month\u2019s deal from a Funbridge team game features a comparable situation, but a defender is given the choice between endplaying either himself or his partner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-ceb43e6\" data-block-id=\"ceb43e6\"><style>.stk-ceb43e6{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Both Vul, Dealer East, IMPs\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagramme-EN-SE-1-1024x971.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83778\" style=\"width:400px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-SE-EN.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83779\" style=\"width:350px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>At some tables, West passed his partner\u2019s 2&#x2665; opening, North balanced with 2NT, and South raised to game. East\u2019s opening lead of the &#x2663;K then gave declarer an easy ride to nine tricks. At other tables, the auction followed the route shown, but West opened the defense with a low spade lead, again giving declarer an easy task. At your table, though, West leads the suit bid and raised by his partnership, so how do you plan to make nine tricks on the lead of the &#x2665;3?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first crucial step is to win the opening lead in hand with the &#x2665;A. You can then pick up the diamonds in a way that allows you to overcome the blockage and cash five rounds of the suit. So, a diamond to the jack, the &#x2666;K, and then three more rounds of the suit, discarding a spade from dummy. West can afford to pitch three spades, but East is in some difficulty. He has to keep three clubs, or you will just play ace and another club whilst you still have a heart stop. So, East has to discard one club, one heart and his spade. You have now taken the first six tricks and these cards remain:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagram-2-SE-EN-1024x971.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83780\" style=\"width:400px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>If you play a spade now, West wins and East can afford to throw a club. West then plays a heart to dummy\u2019s king. Playing a club is no good and, if you play another spade, East ditches a second club and the defenders cash three hearts to go with their two spades. You make no more than the eight tricks with which you started.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winning line in the diagrammed position is to play a heart to the king at trick seven! You then lead a low club from dummy. East wins, but what can he do?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If East cashes his three heart winners, he will then be endplayed to lead away from his remaining club honour at trick 12. The defenders make just three hearts and one club. If, instead, East leads a low heart so that his partner wins with the &#x2665;10, West cannot then avoid giving you a spade trick to go with the &#x2666;A. This time, the defenders make two spades, one club and one heart but, again, you emerge with nine tricks.
