You play the contract that is certainly reached at most if not all tables and count nine immediate tricks. You might get a tenth in Hearts if the Ace is onside. How do you plan the play?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by cashing your five Club tricks to annoy the defenders and then play a Heart towards the King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If North holds the Ace, you have your tenth trick.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If South has it, he\u2019d have to hold something like AQJxx to take more than four tricks and most of the time the worst that will happen is that you are reduced to your initial nine tricks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The next deal looks a bit like the previous one. After the same auction you are again in 3NT, this time in a club game against a pair of inexperienced players:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-c59e9c7\" data-block-id=\"c59e9c7\"><style>.stk-c59e9c7{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dealer West, All Vul.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-2-EN-bird-1024x377.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-85166\" style=\"width:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>North leads the &#x2660;2, fourth best, and South goes up with the Ace and continues the suit. After this start you have nine sure tricks. Here too, dummy\u2019s King of Hearts could provide the tenth if North holds the Ace. Do you plan to play a Heart towards the King as in the first deal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although similar, the situation is not identical to that of deal1. In fact, at trick one South went up with the Ace when he must hold the 10 or 9 (with J1092 North would have led the Jack, not the deuce). Either way, he should have inserted his spot card. You have thus received a gift that most other declarers will not. It\u2019s therefore not the right time to risk compromising everything by an excess of gluttony. If, however, on the run of the Diamonds, any revealing or even unfortunate discards now allow you to play Hearts without fear of jeopardizing your contract, try your luck. Otherwise, stay cautious and be happy to harvest your nine tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>The full deal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Deal-3-EN-bird-1024x971.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-85167\" style=\"width:400px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are situations where you <strong>must not take the slightest risk of going down. That\u2019s the case every time when the simple fact of making your contract already assures you of a good score:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A (too) dynamic non contested auction<\/strong> has led you to reach a game contract despite few points in your combined hands. There will probably only be a few other pairs who reached that contract. Now it turns out that thanks to a lucky lie of the cards you are not only able to make your contract but that you could even get an overtrick by taking a small risk: Don\u2019t take it! It doesn\u2019t matter if the par score of the deal is 430. You know that if you score 400 for the good guys, you\u2019ll get a score close to the top whereas going down would earn you a well-deserved zero.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The same way of reasoning applies when you play<strong> a doubled contract.<\/strong> If you manage to make it, your score will be excellent anyway.
