When uncertainty arises, I employ the Rule of 20. The principle is to add up your high card points (HCP) and the cards in your two longest suits. If the sum is 20 or more, you open. In this particular hand, I held 10 HCP and 9 cards in my two longest suits (5 hearts and 4 diamonds). With a total of 19 (10 + 9), falling just one point short, I made the decision to pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>The whole auction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Analyse-TD-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-85307\" style=\"width:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The auction continued with East&#8217;s 2 Clubs, indicating a Drury bid. This signalled a fit in Spades and a maximum hand for a passed hand.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/analyse-TD-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-85308\" style=\"width:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Then my partner led the 2 of Hearts, showing the need for making a plan. I deduced from the 11 hearts in play, with only the Jack (J) and Ten (T) missing, that if my partner held JT2 of Hearts, the Jack would have been led. Since my partner led a low card, I concluded that it is likely to be a singleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anticipating that my partner would ruff and subsequently play a diamond or a club, I decided to assist by providing a signal. Opting for a high heart suggests the highest of the two remaining suits, while a low heart indicates the lowest one. Accordingly, I played the 3 of Hearts, signalling a preference for a club return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to my expectations, my partner chose to play the Ace of Diamonds, capturing the King from West, and continued with another diamond.
