As for me, I only got 54.24%, the tournament having not gone too well for me despite a good start! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 2: Sit the penalty or not?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In first seat, at favourable vulnerability, I picked <strong>7 very nice spades accompanied by an ace<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-73da39b\" data-block-id=\"73da39b\"><style>.stk-73da39b .stk-img-wrapper{width:80% !important}<\/style><figure><div class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-87213\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-2-en-3.png\" width=\"1860\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-2-en-3.png 1860w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-2-en-3-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-2-en-3-1024x286.png 1024w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-2-en-3-768x215.png 768w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-2-en-3-1536x429.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1860px) 100vw, 1860px\" \/><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The hand is really <strong>too good for opening 3&#x2660;<\/strong> at this vulnerability: I could have this without the Ace of Clubs and the King of Spades! I have two real options: opening at the 4-level and opening at the 1-level. <strong>Several factors nudged me into settling for the 1-level:<\/strong> having Spades rather than Hearts, my good prospects of beating 3NT if my opponents were strong and at least some small part due to having 3 cards in Hearts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After an automatic continuation, the sequence came back to me like this: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-df80531\" data-block-id=\"df80531\"><style>.stk-df80531 .stk-img-wrapper{width:50% !important}<\/style><figure><div class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-87641\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bids-2-Luc-FR-1.png\" width=\"1000\" height=\"744\"\/><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Should we sit this penalty double<\/strong> by Partner with the singleton diamond, a minimum hand in terms of points and a nice 7-card suit that we could rebid once more without concern? The answer is yes; for several reasons. The first is that Argine is quite conservative with penalty doubles and is sure to hold 4 good trumps; and, sure, our 10 of Diamonds is stiff but it is a good help. Next, <strong>the promised reward if they go down is very alluring<\/strong>: the opponents being red, we are assured a great score even if we only defeat them by one trick (+200 being better than +110 or +140). Finally, I have no guarantees in 3&#x2660;, especially as my partner seems to have points in my shortage! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I passed and collected 500 points without difficulty, my opponents only having 7 Diamonds on their way. 85% on the deal!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 6: An obscure contract in a 4-3 fit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was to open once again on this deal, endowed with a powerful 17-point single-suiter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-ffcd675\" data-block-id=\"ffcd675\"><style>.stk-ffcd675{margin-bottom:25px !important}.stk-ffcd675 .stk-img-wrapper{width:80% !important}<\/style><figure><div class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-87217\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Main-donne-6-en.png\" width=\"1860\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Main-donne-6-en.png 1860w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Main-donne-6-en-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Main-donne-6-en-1024x286.png 1024w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Main-donne-6-en-768x215.png 768w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Main-donne-6-en-1536x429.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1860px) 100vw, 1860px\" \/><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After an automatic 1&#x2663; opening, the bidding came back to me after a Sputnik double by Partner: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-99d0459\" data-block-id=\"99d0459\"><style>.stk-99d0459 .stk-img-wrapper{width:50% !important}<\/style><figure><div class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-87220\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-donne-6-1.png\" width=\"1000\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-donne-6-1.png 1000w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-donne-6-1-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-donne-6-1-768x369.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I unfortunately had <strong>too much strength to settle for a non-forcing 3&#x2663; bid<\/strong>: my partner had promised 8 high-card points and I had 17. I therefore had to make a &#8220;false reverse&#8221; to 2&#x2666; to make the sequence forcing. My partner made a cue bid of 2&#x2660;, asking for a further description of my hand. Unfortunately, with 3&#x2663; being described as non-forcing here, I had to say 3&#x2660; to ask my partner for a stop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-5adb98b\" data-block-id=\"5adb98b\"><style>.stk-5adb98b .stk-img-wrapper{width:50% !important}<\/style><figure><div class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-87222\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-donne-6-2en.png\" width=\"1000\" height=\"744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-donne-6-2en.png 1000w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-donne-6-2en-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Encheres-donne-6-2en-768x571.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>What should I do after that when my partner passed the lead-directive double in the bidding? <strong>He should not have a spade stop or a good minor-suit fit.<\/strong> It seemed pertinent for me to suggest 4&#x2665; as a contract here, in a 4-3 fit. To be able to play in such fits, it is best to have good trumps on the long side (here, in Partner&#8217;s 4-card holding) and the ability to ruff with the short trump holding (which was indeed the case here). You can play in a 4-3 fit for two reasons: either because 5-minor contracts have no chance of success, or to try getting a top by scoring +620 rather than +600, which was the case for me here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did not meet with success on this deal, as my partner held 4 mediocre hearts with 5 cards in Diamonds but chose to stay in 4&#x2665;. The contract still had a chance of gaining nicely if the Hearts were 3-3; but the 4-2 break ensured my contract&#8217;s defeat and a very bad score of 6.6% when 5&#x2663; and 5&#x2666; were making. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-391b273\" data-block-id=\"391b273\"><style>.stk-391b273 .stk-img-wrapper{width:70% !important}<\/style><figure><div class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-87643\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagramme-Luc-1-EN.png\" width=\"1158\" height=\"1098\"\/><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 9: Damage limitation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On this deal, I found myself, like everyone, in the contract of 3NT after an uncontested auction: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-651fc7a\" data-block-id=\"651fc7a\"><style>.stk-651fc7a .stk-img-wrapper{width:30% !important}<\/style><figure><div class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-87644\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagramme-Luc-2-EN.png\" width=\"426\" height=\"1098\"\/><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My left-hand opponent led the 2&#x2665;, East inserted the Jack over Dummy&#8217;s 5 and I won my Queen. I would clearly have to play on Diamonds but how should I handle the suit? The simplest option is to cross back in Spades to play a diamond to the Queen but we can improve the play somewhat by playing a diamond towards the 10 to make an extra trick if West holds the King and Jack of Diamonds to four, which was the case here.
