With my 13 HCP, I do not feel that I am in the game zone.”

South: “I have already made a very good decision to not respond 3NT, like the field will, which allowed us to salvage an above-average score. In my mind, jumps in a major are non-forcing and jumps in a minor are forcing. But you might be right.”

The verdict

A classic bill of errors: one of judgement; the other technical. North was right to say that 3♣ was a non-forcing bid with five or six cards and 8-10 HCP. But he was wrong to pass. For proof, remove the Ace of Diamonds from South’s hand and game in 5 Clubs is still cold. North at least owes a courtesy bid and should say 4♣ over 3♣, a better judgement than looking for a diamond stop to find a 3NT contract.

South judged well to not respond 3NT, a contract destined for failure; there will still be time to consider that later. But he should know a simple and very useful rule: no natural bid in response to a take-out double is forcing, no matter the level at which it is bid. He should precede his club bid with a 2♦ cue bid, which, remember, is not reserved for looking for a 4-4 major fit. Responding 4NT forces our side to the 5-level, which presents a risk with no guarantee of finding a fit.”

The verdict

South’s double is a take-out double which leaves the option open to North of passing with a relatively balanced hand or when setting it heavily is a certainty, for example with two aces and a trump trick. With North’s cards, there is no question of passing. No guarantee of taking 4 Spades down, distribution and honours placed ideally for bidding up to the 5-level or even hoping to make a contract at that level. North should pull the double to 4NT or 5♥. What South said holds true but his double might look like a completely different hand, such as ♠84 ♥K1087 ♦K32 ♣A965.

Here, South, with his 6-5 hand, should take responsibility and bid 4NT over this to force them up to a 5-level contract in Hearts or Clubs. Never mind the marginal case where game is going down in both directions. There is much more to gain than to lose, not forgetting that the opponents might bid up to 5♠. We speak of minimising the cost of the mistake. In high-level competitive auctions, going wrong by overbidding only to notice that both contracts are going down one is a small mistake. Leaving the opponents to play in a making contract when your side is also making something is an error that costs way too much.

The bid responsible for the accident
North’s pass over the take-out double.

The correct sequence:

Why respond 5♦ over 4NT and not 5♥ directly?
