South has four Spades and must have solid Diamond stoppers; after all, he bid 3NT over 3&#x2663; knowingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Now, which suit do you choose for your opening lead?<\/strong><br>A five-card suit headed by Ace-Jack-9 has such potential that you must lead a Diamond \u2013 the 5. If you had only four Diamonds (AJ9x), you\u2019d of course choose the Heart 9, <strong>as \u201ctop of nothing\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ns-diaram-correction-EN.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91546\" style=\"width:400px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Contract: 3 No-Trumps.<br>Lead: &#x2666;5. East plays the 10.<br>At this point, three different scenarios may occur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do you react in each situation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SCENARIO A)<\/strong><br>South wins East\u2019s 10 with the King. He then lets the Club 9 run and your partner wins with the King to play back the Diamond 8, South following with the 7.<br><strong>Who has the Diamond Queen?<\/strong><br>Declarer. When partner goes up with the 10 at trick one, he formally denies the Queen.<br><strong>What do you do?<\/strong><br>You put the Diamond 2 on the table because South still has the doubleton Queen left. When East puts his third Diamond (assumption of necessity) on the table, you can catch it and cash four Diamond tricks in total for one down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SCENARIO B)<\/strong><br>South follows with the 7 at trick one and after winning that trick with the 10, partner continues with the 8, covered by declarer with the King.<br><strong>How do you react?<\/strong><br>Let the King win the trick in order to keep communications open with East. In with the Club King, he can then play his third Diamond through declarer\u2019s doubleton Queen:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suit-1-EN-1024x276.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88224\" style=\"width:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Again, one down with four Diamonds and the Club King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SCENARIO C)<\/strong><br>Declarer plays small twice, following with the 7 and 4 on partner\u2019s 10 and 8, respectively. At trick three, South covers the 6 with the King.<br><strong>And now?<\/strong><br>South has played perfectly well. He understood that you started with A-J-9 fifth in Diamonds and thus broke communications for the defense.<br><strong>So, what do you do on South\u2019s King?<\/strong><br>Go up with the Ace and throw away your weapons.
