You absolutely need to get three additional tricks in that suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Will you duck the lead?<\/strong><br>Yes, it costs you absolutely nothing. Alas, West insists with the Diamond Queen, which you duck again (the 5 from East) and West plays another Diamond to dislodge your Ace. On the third round, East discards a Spade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Take stock and think about the probable location of the outstanding honors.<\/strong><br>Don\u2019t forget East\u2019s 1&#x2660; overcall, he certainly holds at least 8HCP. You have 25HCP on your side and West has already shown 6HCP in Diamonds. East therefore holds almost all of the remaining 9HCP!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which honor are you particularly interested in?<\/strong><br>The King of Hearts, of course! But unfortunately, you just deduced that it must be in East\u2019s hand, badly placed behind your Ace Queen. Trying the finesse therefore seems to be doomed to failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is there another plan that seems possible?<\/strong><br>Quite simply to hope that Hearts split 3-3 by playing for example the Jack of Hearts to immediately let East score his King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where\u2019s the hitch?<\/strong><br>Unless East isn\u2019t the brightest bulb in the box, he will duck your Jack of Hearts and you won\u2019t be able to set up the suit because you don\u2019t have an outside entry to dummy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But in which layout can you still make your contract?<\/strong><br>Your only chance is that East\u2019s Heart King is doubleton (or even singleton if East has five Cubs and five Spades).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, do you start by playing the Jack of Hearts?<\/strong><br>Absolutely not! As Rado Nistor did, you have to start with a small Heart and let the defense immediately get the trick they are due, but without sacrificing anything for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For example, West wins the trick, cashes his Diamond and exits with a Spade\u2026<\/strong><br>All you need to do is take your Spade Ace and play a Heart to the Ace, hoping, like a Girondin in 1792, for the King to fall!
