The absence of a sixth ♣ is compensated for by the suit quality, the two-suited distribution and the favourable vulnerability. My partner signed off in 3NT and I received the lead of the ♠7.

I applied the Rule of 11: I could see 3 cards higher than the ♠7. 11 – (7+3) = 1. Therefore, there was only one card higher than the ♠7 with the opening leader’s partner. That card could not be the ♠K, or East would have led the ♠J with ♠J108. I therefore put in the ♠Q from the dummy, which won the first trick.

The ♣ were my best source of tricks. Problem: if I cashed the ♣AKQ and they were not breaking 3-3, the hand would become dire. I would not establish my ♣ and would no longer have any communications with the dummy. And if I started by ducking a round of ♣, I would lose a trick in cases where they were breaking 3-3.

I decided to play for time by running the ♥J to East’s ♥Q; he returned the ♠K. West discarded the ♣4. The ♠ were breaking badly, 6-1, which reduced the likelihood of a favourable ♣ break. I allowed the ♠K to hold, a variant of the “Bath Coup”. Thanks to my ♠A9 tenace, East could not continue in ♠. He could not play another ♥ either without risking giving me the ♥10.

East switched to the ♣2. This seemed to confirm the bad ♣ break. If the suit were breaking well, the defence would look for luck elsewhere. I played for time once again by giving up the lead to the opening leader in ♦. I would finish off by establishing a ♦ from length for one down.

Going down one was rewarding: I scored 78%. Many of you hurried to cash the ♣AKQ and went down two. On this deal, it was better not to put all your eggs in one basket!

Second deal: Stay awake

This was the eighth deal in my tournament. The tournament was going badly and this deal seemed to me to be trivial, no points of interest; I just wanted to play the thing quickly, without suspecting that I would be making a most beautiful play.

You should clearly play on the ♦ by taking a double finesse and take the ♣ finesse. The ♠2 lead showed that the opening leader only had 4 cards in ♠, so there would be no point in ducking for the moment.

Traditionally, I should start with my length in ♦, the length making it the suit with the greatest potential for success.

But I decided to cross to the dummy in ♥ to start with the ♣ finesse by playing a ♣ towards the ♣Q. If that finesse worked, I would be able to continue by establishing the ♦; if it failed, I would have taken out the opening leader’s ♣K entry, which would prevent him from being able to cash his ♠ length later.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-43290fa" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-43290-fa-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-43290-fa-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember: In a 3NT contract, starting by taking out a potential entry to the opening leader’s hand is often winning.

The ♣Q held and I ran the ♦J to East’s ♦Q.
