After partner\u2019s rebid of 1NT there is a possibility that we have 25 HCP combined but that will be the case if partner has a maximum. We have to weigh up the upsides and the downsides of making an invitational bid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-a1a9890\" data-block-id=\"a1a9890\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-a1a9890-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-b1c60c8\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"b1c60c8\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-b1c60c8-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-b1c60c8-inner-blocks\">\n<p><strong>In order for inviting to gain we need:&nbsp;<\/strong><br>1. Partner to accept the invitation&nbsp;<br>2. 3NT to make&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-1beb6a6\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"1beb6a6\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-1beb6a6-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-1beb6a6-inner-blocks\">\n<p><strong>In order for pass to work out we need either:&nbsp;<\/strong><br>1. Partner to pass 2NT and for that to fail <em>or<\/em>&nbsp;<br>2. Partner to bid 3NT and for that to fail&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So inviting needs two things to work out for it to be the right action, whereas passing can gain in one of two scenarios. In this form of scoring we need to be very confident that 3NT will make when we bid it, or that 2NT will not fail when we bid it. With 4333 and no intermediates I think the low road is best. Since partner did not raise hearts we will only have a fit if partner produces 5 diamonds. Try to making 3NT without a fit (and only 25 HCP) seems a bit ambitious.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-2-Shahzaad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90108\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The key idea here (once you\u2019ve made the decision to play in 3NT) is realising that the majority of the field will be playing in 4S. On the heart lead we have 9 top tricks. If club finesse succeeds that will make 10. The players in 4S will lose their two diamonds and a heart and will be taking the finesse in clubs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the finesse succeeds, they will make +420, if it fails they go for -50. So if we never risk the finesse we will always make +400, losing to +420 but winning against -50. We must therefore judge how likely it is for the finesse to succeed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this hand we manage to read the distribution well and knew that West had 5 clubs to East\u2019s 1. From a practical perspective it doesn\u2019t hurt to advance the Queen to see whether West will cover.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 3<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-3-Shahzaad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90110\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Another interesting bidding decision! Over partner\u2019s double we are too strong to simply bid at the 3-level. I think a lot of players would just bid 4H and hope for the best. But partner hasn\u2019t guaranteed 4 hearts with their double. So we should cue, leaving in NT and diamonds as possible strains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this occasion, the operation was a success but the patient died. Diamonds is indeed the best strain but partner had a strange hand. I think that this hand should just settle for bidding 3C in the balancing seat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 4<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-4-Shahzaad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90111\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Not much of note here, other than on the singleton spade lead we should drop the Jack from South under the Ace. We are known to hold the Jack (West would lead the J from J8) so by playing this way we create the possibility in East\u2019s mind that West started with 84.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small thing but every now and then a play like this will bear fruit. Besides, you should at least give East the chance to go wrong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Donne 5<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-5-Shahzaad-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90114\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>I feel that 1NT as an overcall was an undisciplined bid. This hand is not really worth its 15 points for more or less the same reasons that you should take the low road on hand 1.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some sharper guessing would have led to fewer undertricks, which would have turned an average result into a good one. I think that West had given enough count for me to know the distribution, as a result I should have gone after clubs rather than diamonds for my last tricks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dropping the club Queen would have been challenging, but West is a heavy favourite to be dealt a heart honour when they have 5 hearts to East\u2019s 2 \u2013 and if West has a heart honour then East must have the club Queen by virtue of their opening bid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 6<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-6-Shahzaad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90115\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Nothing to say here. The best insight to be gained is from watching the video and seeing how I try to deduce the distribution. You\u2019ll never know what use can be found from calculating the shape and the high-card points, consider this deal an opportunity to practise this skill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 7<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-7-Shahzaad-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90116\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The (potentially) crucial play is at trick 1 here. By playing the Ten here, we deny West the opportunity to unblock the King and use dummy\u2019s Queen as an entry. This is quite safe since partner led the 3, indicating an odd number. If partner had a singleton club they would have to have 5 hearts. Given that they were dealt sufficient values to overcall we can only conclude that they don\u2019t and that as a result they must have 3 clubs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today declarer doesn\u2019t have the club King so our play is irrelevant but it\u2019s useful to have this up your sleeve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 8<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-8-shahzaad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90117\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Here we must not get too carried away in the auction. 2NT on our second go would be too much given our flimsy stoppers in the opponent\u2019s suits, especially after they have both advertised strength. We probably out to bid given our values (although I don\u2019t think this is clear at all) so I think double is the most flexible call.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 2S we are definitely not worth an invite, remember partner did not make a negative double over 1H. Finally, I think that we should balance. Given the auction thus far it seems likely that either the opponents have a big diamond fit, or we have a 9-card spade fit, or we have a double fit. All favour bidding again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-9-shahzaad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90118\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>After the opening lead there isn\u2019t much to do other than draw trumps and claim!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 10<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Donne-10-shahzaad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90119\" style=\"width:600px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Also not the most exciting of deals. We seem to have inexplicably have got a top, the main idea here is not to cover the heart J. There is nothing to gain and everything to lose.
